Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Corporate environmental management and voluntary actions can trigger innovation in companies allowing to achieve competitive position thank to product or process innovations. More recently, voluntary instruments have been identified as key tools to support the transition toward a circular economy. Therefore, these instruments have fully confirmed their flexibility, ranging from tools to improve environmental management of single organisations to instruments to support the objectives set up by environmental policies.

This double perspective is the main focus of this Special Issue that aims to consolidate the knowledge about these instruments as tools to stimulate competitiveness and to support circular economy.

In the framework described above, this Special Issue invites authors to contribute in the following fields (non-exhaustive list):

  • The role of EMAS in the transition to a circular economy and in the pursuing of organisations competitiveness;
  • ISO14001 and other ISO voluntary standards
  • Circular Green Public Procurement;
  • Green corporate procurement toward circular economy;
  • LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) as tools to improve the product “circularity” and competitiveness;
  • Ecolabels & circular economy, ecolabels & competitiveness;
  • Environmental Technology Verification experiences;
  • Networking experiences to boost voluntary tools and circular economy;
  • Voluntary environmental management initiatives in cluster of SMEs and Eco-industrial parks;

Qualitative and quantitative studies will be welcome as well as best practices and experiences descriptions.

Russia is just starting to become a circular and green economy. The development of an efficient national waste management system is a prerequisite for the circular economy (CE). Russian companies are already moving toward adopting more circular business models because it is proven to be a sound business strategy. This strategy facilitates access to new markets, drives innovative solutions, and saves production costs. This paper presents a general understanding of the CE concept. Using practical examples, we show how the Russian government and other stakeholders are providing solutions to advance the development of the waste management system. The paper demonstrates political, legal, and institutional changes implemented through waste management practices and reforms. We introduce four stages of evolution of waste management in Russia and discuss the changing roles of stakeholders in a waste management ecosystem. We conduct a case study of the best available techniques of waste management in leading Russian companies to identify the roles existing in waste management systems (WMS), to allocate responsibilities of each role, and to describe three types of corporate strategies of waste management. The paper is based on the analysis of official public documents and official reports of leading Russian companies. Full article
