Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Advances in cognitive and information sciences, and especially in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications, have raised many ethical and other concerns. Sustainability, understood in a broad sense, is one of these concerns. This encompasses a variety of topics, from the reduction of the carbon footprint of AI systems, to the challenges of human–machine interaction, to the impact of AI on the balances and equities in present and future social systems. The investigation on this topic invites deeper analysis and reflection from a multidisciplinary approach. Relationships and equilibria between humans, social systems and natural environment could suffer from the irruption of new technologies, jeopardizing the efforts to build more sustainable and resilient societies. Nevertheless, such advances could be applied to implement sustainability goals, e.g., by assisting to better address current issues in environmental responsibility and to detect and correct the negative social impact of misleading information.

This Special Issue aims at better understanding the connections between technological development and the underlying processes that influence current equilibria and the future development of social systems and human interactions. Such balances have a clear incidence in the attainment of more sustainable and resilient societies.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • How advances in cognitive and information sciences redefine the structure and balances in and between social systems.
  • How intelligent systems impact the human condition and its relationships with social and natural environments.
  • How AI technology can support human development, well-being, and environmental responsibility.
  • The environmental impact of AI technology, and short- and long-term solutions to reduce the AI carbon footprint.
  • What possibilities humans have to use technology in such a way to meet the needs of the present without impacting the needs and values of future generations.
  • How cognitive and information science can be applied to foster a sustainable use of technology, especially in detecting and addressing biased or unfair decision-making processes and false information gathering and dissemination.
  • Cognitive and information science as a source of sustainable models and as the key to a more sustainable understanding of human condition.
  • Issues concerning future scenarios: enhancing views on the future of humanity in the light of recent cognitive and information sciences.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
