Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

To date, heart failure remains one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in the world, such that it represents a true "epidemic", as defined by the WHO. Over the years and through advances in research, there has been an increasingly detailed understanding of the mechanisms of heart failure that has gone hand in hand with the development of new weapons on many therapeutic targets. We have seen in the past decades a shift from drug therapy of acute and chronic decompensation to the development of mechanical circulatory assistance systems and finally genetic engineering in the field of cardiac transplantation with the very recent pig-human xenograft. We are currently on the front lines of a new era in which to integrate knowledge and therapies into innovative strategies of both established and emergent ones, such as the use of cell therapy, non-coding RNA and gene editing. We are pleased to invite you to submit your work on these topics with a special focus on emerging technologies and strategies. This Special Issue on "Innovative Strategies in Biomedical Research: Focus on Heart Failure" aims to bringing together scientific work aimed at the pathophysiology and treatment of heart failure both in terms of novelty and implementation of existing therapies.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Potential therapeutics for heart failure using novel pathways (miRNA, siRNA, exosomes, gene therapy, cell-based therapy)
  • Novel imaging techniques with impact on heart failure diagnostics and prognosis
  • New approaches in resynchronization therapy with a focus on cellular, molecular and electrophysiological changes
  • Mechanical circulatory support or transplantation with a special focus on the biological response of machine-host interaction or immunomodulation in heart transplant recipients

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Biology is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
