Himalayan Studies Conference 2016

The South Asia Institute Hosts Himalayan Studies Conference in February 2016.From February 25 to 28, Austin, Texas will be the home to what may be the largest gathering of scholars of the Himalayas in the world. The University of Texas at Austin and the South Asia Institute will host the fourth Himalayan Studies Conference (HSC IV), organized by the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies (ANHS) and convened by Prof. Heather Hindman. The HSC was first held in 2011 at Macalester College to provide a more intensive forum for scholarly discussion about the region. The event was well-received, and the second HSC was held at Western Michigan University the following year. For the ANHS, the conference is an opportunity for members to get to know one another and to engage in in-depth discussions that transcend disciplinary boundaries. In March 2014, Mark Turin organized HSC III at Yale University, and participation in the conference blossomed with New Haven rewarding participants with a beautiful weekend. The conference at Yale featured more than 50 panels, a keynote address by Françoise Robin and a screening of Kesang Tseten’s film “Who Will Be a Gurkha.” For many, one of the highlights of the conference was the convivial conversation that took place between formal papers and the excellent food. From the Yale conference, many collaborations were born and publications proposed.
