Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Modern philosophy of religion is concerned with clarity, controversy, and constructive interpretation of phenomena, texts, and topics of religious faith, including the notion of God and the rationality of religious belief. The aim of this special issue of Religions is to bring together some of the most current, original, and ground-breaking work in philosophy of religion in the early 21st century. Some traditional questions, such as the problem of evil, theism/atheism, science and religion, anthropology, and the philosophical rationality of religion and religious phenomena have achieved new relevance over the last two decades. And new topics have arrived, from embodiment to politics of religion and secularism. A number of focal points are possible, but in order to provide a fruitful discussion, I suggest three key topics:

  • life and death: phenomenological, pragmatic, sacrificial, sacramental, political or legal/HR perspectives
  • faith and reason: God, creation, evil, theism/atheism, pluralism, transcendence/immanence
  • body and soul: anthropology, embodied perception, social bodies, the soul/body/spirit problem, AI and neuroscience

In addition to traditional debates on analytic or continental philosophy, pragmatism or phenomenology, the last two decades have been dominated by controversies on science and religion, political and legal perspectives on religion, and discussions on the religious/secular divide (‘post-secularity’). The topics should be addressed in an accessible way, but the special issue should address the merits of various philosophical approaches to religion.
