Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

One-fourth of the world’s population is estimated to be infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes tuberculosis (TB). Most people infected with M. tuberculosis contain the infection within their bodies, leading to a condition previously known as dormant or latent TB, which is now referred to as TB infection (TBI). These individuals do not develop illness or symptoms of the disease and cannot transmit their infection. However, TBI can reactivate and cause TB disease in 5-10% of infected individuals. TB disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and can be transmitted to the community. Therefore, a concerted effort to prevent and control TB is needed to help meet the ambitious target of ending the TB epidemic globally by 2035. These efforts include screening and treating individuals with TBI. Doing so will help reduce the pool of individuals harboring M. tuberculosis who are at risk of developing TB disease and spreading the infection.

This Special Issue seeks to highlight diverse efforts worldwide aimed at better understanding the barriers and enablers of TB infection screening and treatment to inform the development and implementation of appropriate public health interventions. We welcome submissions of original research and review manuscripts that cover any aspects of the above-listed topics.
