Giant Mineral Deposits in Chile: Ore-Forming Process, Ore Grade and Tonnage

Dear Colleagues,

Concentrations and accumulations of giant ore deposits contain anomalously large quantities of metal that represent targets for the successful excavation of an economically significant mineral deposit. With explanations of their genesis ranging from an instantaneous, single-stage process to a prolonged, multistage history of gradual metal addition, reconstitution, and modification, these deposits are priority targets for mineral exploration companies. There is a debate whether these giant deposits have a unique mode of formation. As a result of numerous studies over the past half-century looking the properties of metal complexes in geological formations, it may be asserted that fluids play a key role in controlling metal mobility and ore mineral solubility in natural and anthropogenic systems. This Special Issue of Minerals aims to compile studies on natural systems, laboratory experiment, as well as theoretical and thermodynamic modeling to build our understanding of ore-forming processes and the distribution of grade and tonnage from a diversity point of view.
