Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The research history on chitin was started around 1970-1980, which was the 1st stage on chitin research. Now is going on the 2nd stage both fundamental and industrial fields.
To overview the recent publications, in my opinion, study on chitin (include chitosan) seems to be saturated or stopped. With opening the special issue “chitin”, I strongly hope the very exciting, break-through, scientific, and industrial valuable works.

Submission
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. Papers will be published continuously (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are refereed through a peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Materials is an international peer-reviewed Open Access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 800 CHF (Swiss Francs).

Abstract: Chitin and chitosan are linear polysaccharide composed of b-(1-4)-linked units of 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucose and N-acetyl-2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucose. Chitosan is the copolymer with more deacetylated units (normally more than 60-70 %) and contrary to chitin is soluble in dilute acid solutions and has found many applications in the biomedical, cosmetics and agriculture fields. Due to its insolubility in most solvents, chitin has found few applications to date. However, chitin nanowhiskers have been successfully prepared and used as reinforcements in polymers. This article reviews the production and characterization of nanocomposites reinforced with chitin nanowhiskers and its application as eco-friendly materials or in the biomedical field.
