Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Pain assessment and treatment has advanced greatly since the introduction of the gate control theory and the subsequent emphasis upon multidisiplinarity of the service. Acute, chronic, and cancer pain have been defined and psychosocial modalities enhance the interventional and pharmacological approaches. Pain in groups not previously recognised as experiencing pain, such as babies, older adults, and those with learning disabilities are now recognised, assessed, and treated accordingly. However, we still have work to do and it is not the time to become complacent. Following surgery, people still suffer pain associated with cancer, and some types of chronic pain remain a challenge. As our population is ageing around the world, and we see increasing numbers of older adults unable to articulate their pain, our multicultural societies present communication challenges and diverse cultural or religious beliefs, which must be factored into the care we deliver. Nevertheless, we have made great strides in understanding the mechanisms and the function of the nervous system, which can only help us to understand the whole pain experience. This Special Issue brings together experts from around the world in a collaboration to share their knowledge and experience of the latest thinking in the field of pain. Many aspects of the whole experience will be presented and discussed. Thus, knowledge will be consolidated and the future for research and practice will be highlighted, guiding those new to the field in the way forward.
