Cover Story: Researchers from Thünen Institute and Scion have been participating in a joint Germany–New Zealand science exchange, evaluating fundamental interfacial adhesion behaviours of wood-plastic composites. These plastic-wood fibre interactions are being assessed at the molecular- to macro-scale. Prominent in their research is the use of bio-derived plastics such as poly(lactic acid), which is used as a foil in the lamination of wood veneer. Study outcomes to date indicate adhesion is influenced by the PLA grade used and processing temperatures with distinctions between hardwood and softwood species. View this paper.
