Summary

This Reprint brings together a set of essays that examine the question of religious conflict and coexistence in the Korean context. Using a range of disciplinary perspectives, the contributions offer fresh insights into both longstanding and emerging issues in the study of religion, including shamanic rituals and cosmologies, ecumenical engagement, interreligious dialogue, the dynamics of religion and politics, religious art, Confucian ritual and its interpretation, and the religious dimensions of space and time. Despite their thematic and methodological diversity, the essays share a common concern with how religion in Korea, both historical and contemporary, responds to changing and often challenging conditions. These responses take multiple forms: epistemological and behavioral adjustments, the development of new institutional and ritual configurations, the articulation of idealized values through aesthetic media, and the reconfiguration of spatial meanings. Taken together, the volume highlights the creativity and vitality of religious traditions in Korea as they engage an evolving social and cultural milieu.
