Educating for Gender Equality: Why It Is Important to Talk About

The purpose of this chapter is to promote gender equality in education, within a framework of active citizenship, solidarity, and egalitarian visions towards gender equality. Throughout the second half of the 20th century, we have witnessed a more balanced approach to gender discrimination. However, when we analyze the social reality, we can see that there is still a lot to do with regard to this matter. The responsibility that families and school contexts assume in the process of socialization of the values of freedom, justice, plurality, or equality, to ensure that the future may be of a more equitable citizenship as far as gender is concerned, is becoming increasingly evident. I believe that all school agents have a main role to play in these issues. It is at school, and not only there, that stereotyped conceptions about gender are deconstructed, which may in the future influence the child and the way in which, as an adult, he/she will assume his/her personal, social and professional roles.
