Summary

This book is intended to systematically produce evidence-based knowledge through a rigorous process of collective academic and professional engagement with direct implications for policy, discourse, and actions from continental perspectives guided by the SDGs’ blueprint compass, Agenda 2030 and 2063. This initiative is further intended to systematically strengthen the next generation of academics, researchers, and policymakers in the area of the SDGs. The following two themes are identified to kick off the book and include:

  1. The localization of SDGs;
  2. The financing of SDGs.

A set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), replacing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), were adopted in September 2015 by 193 countries, and officially implemented in January 2016. These goals can be summarized as goals meant to “end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all” (Gavi 2021). Governments of the represented countries pledged to work hard towards achieving Agenda 2030. The Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA) establishes a blueprint to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda by providing a global framework for financing sustainable development that aligns all financing flows and policies with economic, social, and environmental priorities. This will require countries to mobilize unprecedented levels of financing, investment, technical know-how, and data and institutional capacities to ensure great strides are made quickly so that no one is left behind. This level of ambition requires innovative methods and channels of generating financing and investment, revitalized and enhanced partnerships between the public and private sectors, and context-specific localization of the SDGs.
