Annual Canadian Conference on HIV/AIDS – CAHR 2018
The 27th Annual Canadian Conference on HIV/AIDS Research is the premier gathering in Canada for those working in all disciplines of HIV/AIDS research, as well as policy makers, persons living with HIV and other individuals committed to ending the pandemic.
This year’s conference theme is Celebrating our Diversity: Uniting in the Response to HIV
In this the 27th year of the CAHR conference we look back at the achievements of the last three decades and forward to the work we have yet to do. Since its emergence in the early 1980’s, HIV has changed us. HIV takes no prisoners, and kills indiscriminately of age, race or gender.
Together we have fought back in many ways, both on the prevention and the treatment front. There are now close to 20 million people accessing antiretroviral treatment. Pre-exposure prophylaxis and maternal antiretroviral therapy are preventing new infection, and we are getting closer in our search for an effective vaccine, and a cure. Over the past decades, the face of HIV/AIDS research has also changed and CAHR, as an organization, should reflect those changes.
This year at CAHR 2018, we endeavour to acknowledge and celebrate diversity among both people with lived experience of HIV, as well as among HIV researchers. More than ever members of the community and key affected populations are generating ground-breaking research. In this quest against HIV, we have learned that we can accomplish more together when we embrace our diversity as people with unique lived experiences, perspectives and ideas to contribute. Uniting groups of researchers from multiple tracks – health care professionals, community workers, academics, trainees, educators, activists, volunteers, people with lived experience of HIV, and policy makers – we have many objectives to pursue in order to improve the lives of people living with HIV, and prevent new infections.
We invite you to join us next April for CAHR 2018, in beautiful Vancouver on the unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. In this place, let’s celebrate our diversity as peoples affected by HIV, and as HIV researchers; let’s unite in our response to HIV.
