Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This call for papers for a Special Issue of Social Science is searching for a wide array of papers that explore diversity and inclusion issues in the military. We recognize that there has been tremendous change in opportunities for previously marginalized groups in recent decades, but also that challenges remain. We seek to be inclusive and define diversity broadly. Thus, we invite papers focused on race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, physical and mental ability, social class, citizenship, and gender identity. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to, the effect of diversity on recruitment and retention, civil–military relations, case studies related to policy, mission readiness, veterans’ issues, and impacts of military service.

We welcome papers that use a variety of levels of analysis and methodologies, and that apply different theoretical orientations. Studies representing international militaries are welcome. The goal is to provide a productive venue to discuss contemporary issues of diversity and inclusion in the armed forces that can inform dialogue among academics, policy makers and practitioners. Manuscripts will be selected for publication based on topical relevance, clarity of argument, theoretical and methodological rigor, and ability to contribute to the fields of military sociology and diversity studies.
