Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Water pollution is one of the major global challenges due to rapid population growth and industrialisation. In addition, natural water supplies are decreasing due to climate change and over-exploitation in developing countries. Wastewater treating systems, such as ozonation, are distressed by cost limitations. In addition, some classes of contaminants are resistant to aerobic degradation, and anaerobic processes do not treat the water to the desired limits. In contrast, due to the double advantage of cost and performance, membrane separation, especially for ultrafiltration and nanofiltration, is getting more and more attention. Low cost and ease of use make the process an attractive solution for water remediation, while facing the inevitable membrane fouling problem.

We are pleased to invite you to share with us about your ideas and inspirations, in order to present the latest trends or outcomes of membrane-based technologies. This Special Issue aims to introduce the possibilities of overcoming membrane fouling and the latest technology of antifouling membrane materials. Membrane fouling is a difficult phenomenon to resolve in actual operating membrane modules and overcoming it can actually reduce the total cost during separation or purification process. In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following themes:

  • Membrane materials: the membranes with antifouling properties, such as inorganic membranes, polymeric membranes, hybrid membranes;
  • Membrane preparation and characterization: synthesis and modification methods, such as nanoscaled assemble, characterization and analysis of membrane structure, function, transportation, etc.;
  • Membrane processes: membranes which own the pore scale equaled to ultrafiltration (UF) The membrane materials which use for other ways are also welcomed, like dialysis, electro-membrane processes, membrane distillation, membrane catalysis, mass transfer, etc.;
  • Modeling and simulation: molecular simulation of antifouling membranes, modeling transport through antifouling membranes, modeling and simulation of membrane fouling, modeling and prediction of the performance of antifouling membranes, etc.;
  • Membrane applications: the applications in water treatment, food, textiles, chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

We are looking forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Membranes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
