19th European Carbohydrate Symposium EUROCARB

To the Glycoscience Community,

It is a pleasure to invite and welcome you to 19th EUROCARB to be held in Barcelona on July 2nd-6th, 2017, hosted by the Institut Químic de Sarrià, University Ramon Llull, under the auspices of the European Carbohydrate Organization.

The first EUROCARB symposium was organized in Austria in 1981. As a biannual meeting, it has evolved from a carbohydrate chemistry forum to a glycoscience meeting which also includes glycobiology and biological chemistry. Nowadays, EUROCARB is positioned as a leading symposium at the forefront of Glycosciences in Europe.

The EUROCARB 2017 program will try to consolidate the interplay between chemistry and biology, to be attractive to both communities, and reinforce the needed interaction between glycochemistry, glycobiology, and applied glycosciences. The conference will be organized in four main topics that cover all aspects of Glycosciences, aimed at showing the latest developments in the field, provide a forum for discussions and networking and highlight the challenges and future trends in carbohydrate-related scientific disciplines and applied technologies:

Synthesis of Carbohydrates, Glycoconjugates, and glycan-based biomaterials: chemical, enzymatic, and synthetic biology approaches. Supramolecular entities and biomaterials.
Carbohydrate Structures, Analytical Tools, and Glycotechnology: advanced analytical and structural tools, glycomics, integrative databases, and computational methods.
Glycobiochemistry and Glycobiology: carbohydrate active enzymes, cellular and molecular biology of glycans, glycomicrobiology and metagenomics
Applied Glycosciences in medicine, nutrition, and biotechnology: glycans in health and disease (cancer, immunity, vaccination, rare diseases, etc), in food science, in the emerging bioeconomy, and industrial biotech.

EUROCARB 2017 will gather academia and industry to burst innovative technologies into application in a large diversity of fields, including medicine, nutrition and food sciences, material sciences, chemistry, biotechnology and bioeconomy.

The symposium is also an opportunity to visit Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, a cosmopolitan city with Mediterranean character and intercultural heritage. Either before or after the symposium you’ll be able to enjoy the city, its architecture including amazing Gaudi’s buildings, its museums and its water forefront with beautiful beaches.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we wish you all a profitable and enjoyable meeting in Barcelona 2017.

Antoni Planas

Chairman of the Organizing Committee
