2000 Inaugural issue released, initially published as a quarterly journal.
2003 Changed to a monthly publication schedule.
2004 Covered by the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE).
2005 First Impact Factor received.
2006 IJMS became the first MDPI journal to start using the submission system at submit.mdpi.org (no longer available).
2007 The following topical sections were setup:
2008 MDPI joined CrossRef and started assigning DOI numbers to each paper published in the IJMS. All papers from this year on were released under the Creative Commons (CC-BY) license. IJMS was archived in PubMed Central (PMC) and covered in PubMed. The journal was moved from www.mpdi.org onto the publishing platform at www.mdpi.com in October 2008.
2009 IJMS sections on Molecular Toxicology, Muscle Contraction (discontinued after one year), Molecular Recognition, and Molecular Diagnostics were setup.
2010 IJMS switched to the new submission system at http://susy.mdpi.com/.
2011 IJMS Impact Factor, released in June 2011 more than 2.0.
2012 IJMS published more than 1'000 papers in one year for the first time, Impact Factor surpassed 2.5.
2013

IJMS sponsored the ILMAT conference.

2014 IJMS sponsored the following conferences:
 
2015 IJMS section on Bioinorganic Chemistry was setup.

IJMS Impact Factor surpassed 3.2.


•    IJMS published more than 8,000 papers in total, and 200 papers in a single issue.
•    IJMS section on Molecular Botany was setup.
•    IJMS started the project of Translational Medicine was setup.

•    IJMS started the project of Young Investigator Prize and Travel Awards.
