Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the past decade, the world has made remarkable strides in advancing renewable energy, owing to multilateral efforts promoted by climate change pledges. Nevertheless, in the wake of post-pandemic economic revival efforts and heightened concerns regarding energy security amid shifting geopolitical dynamics, there has been an unmistakable surge in the demand for fossil fuels, surpassing pre-pandemic levels (Mišík and Nosko, 2023). This trend carries significant repercussions, both for the renewable energy sector and the global environment, as underscored by Ahmed (2023). It is worth noting that experts assert that climate change could potentially exacerbate existing socioeconomic and energy security challenges, notwithstanding our temporary reliance on fossil fuels as a means to address energy security issues (Nguyen et al., 2023). Furthermore, the ongoing barrage of extreme climatic and weather events serves as an emphatic reminder that climate change remains a critical global challenge. Indeed, further targeted and stringent environmental regulations and policy instruments are required in order to achieve a net-zero emissions target. Consequently, this Special Issue places a concerted emphasis on gathering empirical evidence that underscores our potential capacity to transform current challenges, such as post-pandemic economic recovery and the impact of evolving geopolitics on energy security, into opportunities for amplifying the incorporation of renewable energy within the broader energy matrix through more robust policy instruments. This strategic endeavour aligns with the pursuit of low-carbon economy goals, promoted by both developed and developing nations.
