Dear Colleagues,
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are innovative bio-electrochemical devices that possess considerable potential in treating wastewater, degrading organic pollutants, removing toxic heavy metals, and recovering nutrients, while simultaneously generating electric power using electrochemically active bacteria (EAB). While fundamental applications of MFCs are treatment of wastewater and production of electricity, various forms of MFCs, such as algae-assisted MFCs, plant/photosynthetic MFCs, wetland MFCs, and hydroponics MFCs, have emerged over the years. This Special Issue will focus on recent advancements of MFC technologies that contribute to renewable energy, resource recovery, low carbon footprint, and sustainability.

Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
