This Special Issue examines the theological foundations of Ignatian spirituality, their historical development, and their significance for contemporary theological reflection. Rooted in the life and writings of St Ignatius of Loyola, this tradition has profoundly shaped Christian thought and practice since the sixteenth century. Its emergence within the ecclesial, intellectual, and cultural transformations of the early modern period provides an indispensable framework for understanding both its doctrinal foundations and its lasting contribution to spiritual theology.
The volume explores the theological principles underlying central dimensions of the Ignatian tradition, particularly the Spiritual Exercises, discernment, and the search for God in all things. Special attention is devoted to their grounding in the Incarnation, the Trinity, and the Paschal Mystery, as well as to their reception within the broader Jesuit theological tradition. It also considers the historical evolution of Ignatian spirituality, including its reception in diverse ecclesial and cultural settings.
