Summary

Microbial natural products have long been recognized as promising sources for the development of novel antimicrobial agents. In recent decades, numerous microbial secondary metabolites, such as antimicrobial peptides, bacteriocins, and mycocins, have been identified for their potential applications in the food, agriculture, and pharmaceutical industries. However, only a few, such as nisin and natamycin, have been effectively implemented in food systems as alternatives to conventional antimicrobial agents.

Given the increasing demand for natural and eco-friendly biocides and preservatives in food, crops, and cosmetics, there is a clear need for the continued development of broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents that are both effective and less toxic. This Special Issue of Antibiotics has brought together original research and review articles focused on the discovery, characterization, and mechanisms of action of antimicrobial peptides, bacteriocins, and mycocins. These contributions explore their applications in food safety, microbial control in food systems, agriculture, cosmetics, and both human and animal health. Collectively, the articles presented in this Reprint expand the current understanding of microbial natural products and highlight their potential as effective, safer alternatives to traditional antibiotics, biocides, and preservatives.
