Summary

The sum of oil and gas consumption still constitutes more than half of energy consumption around the globe, necessitating the highly efficient development of such resources. Due to the success of unconventional oil and gas exploitation efforts, the USA has realized its dream of energy independence. The phenomenon sets a good example for other countries. The following Special Issue (SI) focuses on advances in efficiently developing hydrocarbon resources from subsurface formations in the ocean, and the published papers primarily focus on reservoir characterization, gas hydrate decomposition, hydrocarbon accumulation, and hydraulic fracture.
