Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to introduce to you a Special Issue dedicated to the exploration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the construction industry.

The current advancements in AI present a lot of challenges and opportunities for the construction sector. Understanding the intricacies of these developments and devising strategies to effectively harness the potential of AI are imperative for all stakeholders within the industry. AI can play a pivotal role in bolstering sustainability and resilience within construction projects by optimizing resource allocation, minimizing waste, and bolstering the structural integrity of edifices.

A growing number of construction enterprises are recognizing the manifold benefits offered by AI technologies and are beginning to integrate them into their operations. This adoption is driven by the promise of heightened efficiency, enhanced productivity, and bolstered safety measures across projects. Moreover, the convergence of AI with allied domains such as robotics, IoT, and materials science presents fertile ground for interdisciplinary collaboration, thereby facilitating the collective endeavor to address the multifaceted challenges encountered within construction.

It is my sincere belief that this Special Issue will serve as an invaluable platform for the dissemination of cutting-edge research findings, the exchange of best practices, and the cultivation of meaningful discourse surrounding the opportunities and challenges inherent in the integration of AI within the construction domain.

Proposed topics:

  • Automated site planning and layout optimization using AI algorithms.
  • Generative design in construction projects.
  • Drones and their role in surveying and monitoring construction sites.
  • AI-enabled building systems and automation.
  • IoT integration for smart construction projects.
  • Energy-efficient construction through AI optimization.
  • AI for real-time safety monitoring on construction sites.
  • Predictive analytics for identifying potential safety hazards.
  • Big data analytics in the construction industry.
  • Small data approaches for technical diagnostics.
  • AI for extracting insights from construction data.
  • Data-driven decision-making in construction projects.
  • AI applications for sustainable building design.
  • Monitoring and optimizing construction processes for environmental impact.
  • AI-driven solutions for recycling and waste reduction in construction.
  • Augmented reality and virtual reality in construction.
  • Real-world examples of AI implementation in construction projects.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Machine Learning and Knowledge Extraction is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
