Stefan Burkart
Biography
Dr. Stefan Burkart is a Project Leader and Scientist at the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT’s Tropical Forages Program, based in Cali, Colombia. He obtained his BSc in Agricultural Economics, his MSc in Agribusiness and his PhD in Agricultural Sciences (major: Economics and Social Sciences) from the University of Hohenheim, Germany. His PhD thesis dealt with value chain assessment and business model development in Colombia and Nicaragua and was developed in strong collaboration with CIAT. His major research focus lies on value chain assessment and development, business model development, the economic analysis of agricultural technologies, knowledge and innovation systems, consumer studies and livestock sector analysis, applying both quantitative and qualitative approaches. He joined CIAT’s Tropical Forages Program in 2014 after working at Hohenheim University for 2 years in the social sciences and has, since then, led the economic and social sciences working group, with a particular focus on the livestock sector. Since 2015, he has been CIAT’s representative on the Colombian Roundtable for Sustainable Livestock. Since 2016, he has held a leading role in the global CGIAR Research Program on Livestock. Since 2019, he has supported CIAT’s contributions to the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock and the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef. He has experience in research across the global tropics (Latin America, East Africa and Southeast Asia) and Europe.
