The itch/scratch cycle is an important, poorly understood feature of atopic eczema pathogenesis. The observation that IL13Rα2 is upregulated in response to scratch wounding supports it known protective role in skin inflammation. The observation that it is highly upregulated in lichenified AE skin implies that IL13Rα2 upregulation alone is not sufficient to ameliorate the itch/scratch cycle in AE and this limits the clinical impact of the findings.

It would be beneficial to see if the MAPK signalling pathway is also upregulated in the lichenified AE skin samples?
