This article explores how Japanese anime has become a space of theological imagination, where viewers encounter the divine not as fixed dogma but as a lived process. Through symbolic analysis of five spiritually resonant anime series: Puella Magi Madoka Magica, To Your Eternity, Sunday Without God, Code Geass, and The Promised Neverland, the study examines how characters such as Madoka, Fushi, Ai, Lelouch, Emma, and Mujika embody a form of theosis that unfolds through memory, sacrifice, refusal, and care. Rather than representing God as omnipotent or remote, these narratives invite a vision of the divine as vulnerable, suffering, and becoming, emerging through grief, relationships, and transformations. Drawing on theological and philosophical frameworks, especially process theology and symbolic interpretation, the article argues that anime collapses the traditional boundaries between theology and philosophy by embodying both in story. In these narrative worlds, divinity is not merely represented, it is approached, co-created, and remembered. The sacred is not a theory to master, but an encounter to undergo. Anime, thus, does not offer theology as a system but rather theology as a journey: a reenchanted vision of the world where God is still becoming. Full article

Momordica balsamina, a plant traditionally used in African medicine, contains a 30 kDa protein, MoMo30, previously identified by our group as an anti-HIV agent that binds glycan residues on the gp120 envelope protein, thereby acting as an entry inhibitor. In this study, we investigated whether prolonged exposure to MoMo30 exerts selective pressure on HIV-1 and induces mutations in the viral envelope (env) gene. T-lymphocyte cells were infected with HIV-1NL4-3 and continuously treated with MoMo30 over a 24-day period. Viral RNA was isolated at regular intervals, and env genes were sequenced using the Illumina platform. RNA sequence variant calling was performed using iVar, which uses a frequency-based binomial test with a default allele frequency threshold of 3% and a minimum base quality of 20 and applies Bonferroni correction for multiple testing. The infectivity of the MoMo30-exposed virus was assessed using MAGI-CXCR4 cells, visualized by β-galactosidase staining, and compared to untreated controls. Statistical significance was determined via two-way ANOVA. MoMo30-treated HIV-1 exhibited multiple detrimental mutations in gp120 and gp41, including missense, nonsense, and frameshift changes. Notably, 32% of N-linked glycosylation sites were deleted in the treated virus, while no such changes were observed in controls. Functionally, the MoMo30-treated virus demonstrated a sixfold reduction in infectivity compared to untreated HIV-1NL4-3. These findings suggest that MoMo30 imposes genetic pressure on HIV-1NL4-3, selecting for mutations that reduce viral fitness. Full article

Background: Differentiating pituitary adenoma (PA) from Rathke’s cleft cyst (RCC) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains challenging due to overlapping imaging features such as the cystic appearance, and location within the sellar region. A magnetic resonance image compilation (MAGiC) sequence can simultaneously acquire R1 and R2 relaxation rates. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of MAGiC-driven imaging parameters for distinguishing PA from RCC. Methods: In total, 108 patients (54 each with PA or RCC) who underwent MRI using the MAGiC sequence were included in this study. The R1 and R2 relaxation rates were measured from the regions of interest identified in the MAGiC images. The relaxation rates between the PA and RCC groups were compared and diagnostic performance was assessed. Results: The relaxation rates of PA and RCC differed significantly. PA exhibited lower R1 (0.71 vs. 1.31, p < 0.001) and R2 (13.62 vs. 11.38, p = 0.029) relaxation rates than RCC. The R1 relaxation rate demonstrated superior diagnostic performance, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.74 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.65–0.82), surpassing the R2 rate (AUC 0.62; 95% CI: 0.52–0.71). The optimal threshold for R1 was determined to be 0.82, which provided a sensitivity of 79.6% and specificity of 74.1% (p < 0.001), whereas the optimal threshold for R2 was 14.89 (p = 0.030). Conclusions: MAGiC-driven parameters, particularly the R1 relaxation rate, show promise for improving the differentiation between PA and RCC. These findings suggest the potential for the broader application of MAGiC imaging in clinical practice to improve diagnostic accuracy. Full article

This article addresses a gap in the literature by offering the first structured reconstruction of the origins, motivations, and development of Ignatian Leadership, connecting its spiritual roots, conceptual foundations, and institutional applications within a coherent and transferable framework. The study explores the genesis, evolution, and contemporary relevance of Ignatian Leadership as a transformative model that combines organisational management principles with the spirituality of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and the Jesuit tradition. Through a qualitative methodology, we conducted an exhaustive review of 54 documents and interviews with key experts, incorporating diverse phenomenological perspectives. The findings show that this leadership model emerged to renew the apostolic mission of the Society of Jesus, modernise its educational management, and empower both laypeople and Jesuits in leadership roles. Grounded in Ignatian spirituality—particularly in the practice of discernment aimed at promoting actions inspired by the Magis, in ever deeper and greater service to the most universal good—it seeks to serve others and promote the common good. Over time, the model has expanded beyond religious contexts, offering a counter-cultural and ethically grounded leadership style applicable in educational, managerial and civic settings. This shift of focus not only paves the way for institutional change but also guides individuals towards a more authentic and meaningful life. Full article

Male tract infections (MTIs) are a common clinical condition, often presenting without any signs nor symptoms of disease. As advised by the European Urology Guidelines dealing with this topic, patients are typically treated with antibiotics alone. Nevertheless, in between 40% and 50% of cases, antibiotic therapy is not effective in eradicating the semen infection. Therefore, persistent semen infection is frequently found upon semen culture evaluation following antibiotic therapy. In this study, we aimed to analyze the fecal microbiota of male infertile patients with persistent MTI in order to verify the prevalence of gut dysbiosis in these patients. We therefore enrolled 20 infertile patients with persistent MTIs after a proper cycle of antibiotic treatment. All patients performed the study for gut microbiota analysis after about 30 days after the last dose of antibiotic treatment. Gut microbiota analysis revealed that 50% of patients with persistent MTI presented a reduction in microbial biodiversity. Indeed, a situation of gut dysbiosis was reported in 75% of patients. In details, the Firmicutes–Bacteroidetes ratio was reduced in 70% of such patients, including 40% of patients where a severe reduction was observed due to an elevated abundance of Bacteroidetes (putrefactive dysbiosis). The most frequent enterotype was Prevotella-dominant (43%). We demonstrated for the first time that patients with recurrent MTIs have enterotypes associated with increased gut permeability and systemic inflammation. Further studies are required to analyze the molecular machinery by which gut dysbiosis exerts its role in patients with MTIs, in particular persistent MTIs, and how supplementation with probiotics might impact in terms of restoring eubiosis, in terms of eradicating the infection, and reducing prostate inflammation and eventually in terms of improving semen evaluation in male infertile patients. Currently, small object detection in complex remote sensing environments faces significant challenges. The detectors designed for this scenario have limitations, such as insufficient extraction of spatial local information, inflexible feature fusion, and limited global feature acquisition capability. In addition, there is a need to balance performance and complexity when improving the model. To address these issues, this paper proposes an efficient and lightweight SCM-YOLO detector improved from YOLOv5 with spatial local information enhancement, multi-scale feature adaptive fusion, and global sensing capabilities. The SCM-YOLO detector consists of three innovative and lightweight modules: the Space Interleaving in Depth (SPID) module, the Cross Block and Channel Reweight Concat (CBCC) module, and the Mixed Local Channel Attention Global Integration (MAGI) module. These three modules effectively improve the performance of the detector from three aspects: feature extraction, feature fusion, and feature perception. The ability of SCM-YOLO to detect small objects in complex remote sensing environments has been significantly improved while maintaining its lightweight characteristics. The effectiveness and lightweight characteristics of SCM-YOLO are verified through comparison experiments with AI-TOD and SIMD public remote sensing small object detection datasets. In addition, we validate the effectiveness of the three modules, SPID, CBCC, and MAGI, through ablation experiments. The comparison experiments on the AI-TOD dataset show that the mAP50 and mAP50-95 metrics of SCM-YOLO reach 64.053% and 27.283%, respectively, which are significantly better than other models with the same parameter size. Abstract: Our work aimed to evaluate and differentiate the role of ten lncRNA genes (GAS5, HAND2-AS1, KCNK15-AS1, MAGI2-AS3, MEG3, SEMA3B-AS1, SNHG6, SSTR5-AS1, ZEB1-AS1, and ZNF667-AS1) in the development and progression of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). A representative set of clinical samples was used: 140 primary tumors from patients without and with metastases and 59 peritoneal metastases. Using MS-qPCR, we demonstrated an increase in methylation levels of all ten lncRNA genes in tumors compared to normal tissues (p < 0.001). Using RT-qPCR, we showed downregulation and an inverse relationship between methylation and expression levels for ten lncRNAs (rs < −0.5). We further identified lncRNA genes that were specifically hypermethylated in tumors from patients with metastases to lymph nodes (HAND2-AS1), peritoneum (KCNK15-AS1, MEG3, and SEMA3B-AS1), and greater omentum (MEG3, SEMA3B-AS1, and ZNF667-AS1). The same four lncRNA genes involved in peritoneal spread were associated with clinical stage and tumor extent (p < 0.001). Interestingly, we found a reversion from increase to decrease in the hypermethylation level of five metastasis-related lncRNA genes (MEG3, SEMA3B-AS1, SSTR5-AS1, ZEB1-AS1, and ZNF667-AS1) in 59 peritoneal metastases. This reversion may be associated with partial epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) in metastatic cells, as indicated by a decrease in the level of the EMT marker, CDH1 mRNA (p < 0.01). Furthermore, novel mRNA targets and regulated miRNAs were predicted for a number of the studied lncRNAs using the NCBI GEO datasets and analyzed by RT-qPCR and transfection of SKOV3 and OVCAR3 cells. In addition, hypermethylation of SEMA3B-AS1, SSTR5-AS1, and ZNF667-AS1 genes was proposed as a marker for overall survival in patients with EOC. Full article

Objective: The goal of this study was to compare the results of CNV detection by three different methods using 13 paired carcinoma samples, as well as to perform a statistical analysis of the agreement. Methods: CNV was studied using NanoString nCounter v2 Cancer CN Assay (Nanostring), Illumina Infinium CoreExome microarrays (CoreExome microarrays) and digital droplet PCR (ddPCR). Results: There was a good level of agreement (PABAK score > 0.6) between the CoreExome microarrays and the ddPCR results for finding CNVs. There was a moderate level of agreement (PABAK values ≈ 0.3–0.6) between the NanoString Assay results and microarrays or ddPCR. For 83 out of 87 target genes studied (95%), the agreement between the CoreExome microarrays and NanoString nCounter was characterized by PABAK values < 0.75, except for MAGI3, PDGFRA, NKX2-1 and KDR genes (>0.75). The MET, HMGA2, KDR, C8orf4, PAX9, CDK6, and CCND2 genes had the highest agreement among all three approaches. Conclusions: Therefore, to get a better idea of how to genotype an unknown CNV spectrum in tumor or normal tissue samples that are very different molecularly, it makes sense to use at least two CNV detection methods. One of them, like ddPCR, should be able to quantitatively confirm the results of the other. Full article

In art-historical terms, a self-portrait in assistenza refers to an artist having inserted their own likeness into a larger work. In Renaissance-era art, more than 90 examples have been identified, famously including Botticelli’s Adoration of the Magi (c. 1478/1483). There, Botticelli glances out from the painting, making direct eye contact with the viewer, a feature that appears in other self-portraits of the type. In ancient Egypt, it was not commonly accepted that an artist would lay claim to it, especially when the work’s scale imposed diversification of tasks to be performed or teamwork organized on a workshop basis. This article will present evidence discovered in the Chapel of Hatshepsut in her temple at Deir el-Bahari that can be interpreted as a self-portrait in assistenza and indicates that Djehuty, Overseer of the Treasury under Hatshepsut, took the lead role there. If this identification is valid, the room’s decoration gains an additional layer of meaning and may be “read” in terms of Djehuty’s message, comparable to Botticelli gazing out from his Adoration of the Magi. This ancient Egyptian case will illustrate how that artist-designer, in interweaving subtle indicators of his involvement in the work, expresses awareness both of his intellectual skills and of his pride in creation. The aim of this article is to approach the epistemology of revelation through the approach of political anthropology. It departs from Max Weber’s distinction between ordinary and out-of-the-ordinary situations, which led to his idea of charismatic power. This article complements the Weberian perspective by introducing the anthropological term “liminality” for such situations, as well as the term “trickster” for figures who have a specific affinity for appearing in such situations, creating havoc instead of offering a solution. Ordinary knowledge does not apply to liminal void situations of incommensurability; incommensurable knowledge can be gained by magic and religion. Magic forces the transcendent and claims to produce effects, while religion is based on revealed knowledge, the validity of which is established by trust. Under particularly anguishing liminal conditions, the hardly tolerated practitioners of magic might gain positions of power. An important such example is offered by Persian Magi. Turning to the present, modern rationalism, with Bacon and Descartes, undermined both ordinary and revealed knowledge. The possible relevance of revealed knowledge in contemporary times is discussed through the related phenomena of apocalyptic expectations and Marian apparitions. Full article

Background: Gastrointestinal cancer cells display both morphology and physiology diversity, thus posing a significant challenge for precise representation by a single data model. We conducted an in-depth study of gastrointestinal cancer heterogeneity by integrating and analyzing data from multiple modalities. Methods: We used a modified Canny algorithm to identify edges from tumor images, capturing intricate nonlinear interactions between pixels. These edge features were then combined with differentially expressed mRNA, miRNA, and immune cell data. Before data integration, we used the K-medoids algorithm to pre-cluster individual data types. The results of pre-clustering were used to construct the kernel matrix. Finally, we applied spectral clustering to the fusion matrix to identify different tumor subtypes. Furthermore, we identified hub genes linked to these subtypes and their biological roles through the application of Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) and Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis. Results: Our investigation categorized patients into three distinct tumor subtypes and pinpointed hub genes associated with each. Genes MAGI2-AS3, MALAT1, and SPARC were identified as having a differential impact on the metastatic and invasive capabilities of cancer cells. Conclusion: By harnessing multimodal features, our study enhances the understanding of gastrointestinal tumor heterogeneity and identifies biomarkers for personalized medicine and targeted treatments. This study analyzes temperature trends and thermal comfort during the key hours (i.e., from noon to 3:00 p.m.) of human tower (castells) performances in four significant festivities involving this outdoor exhibition (diada castellera) in Catalonia. Human towers were recognized by UNESCO in 2010 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. The selected exhibitions were Sant Joan in Valls on 24 June; Festa Major de La Bisbal del Penedès on 15 August; Sant Magí in Tarragona on 19 August; and Sant Fèlix in Vilafranca del Penedès on 30 August. Temperature and relative humidity data were downloaded from the Copernicus Climate Change Service’s ERA5-Land and ERA5 pressure level datasets, respectively, with reanalysis from 1951 to 2023. The results revealed a clear upward trend in temperatures over the last several decades in these four places and for the respective dates, from +0.3 °C per decade in La Bisbal del Penedès to +0.42 °C per decade in Valls. Most of the positive temperature anomalies were concentrated in the last 25 years. The calculation of the Heat Index revealed a higher occurrence of years with possible fatigue due to prolonged exposure and/or physical activity in the three inland locations (i.e., Valls, La Bisbal del Penedès, and Vilafranca del Penedès) and a greater frequency of years with possible heat stroke, heat cramps, and/or heat exhaustion in Tarragona, which is near the Mediterranean Sea. This warming trend and increased discomfort pose potential health risks for participants and suggests a need for adaptive measures. These findings emphasize the importance of incorporating climate considerations into human tower planning. Full article

Parallel GPU-Acceleration of Metaphorless Optimization Algorithms: Application for Solving Large-Scale Nonlinear Equation Systems

Traditional population-based metaheuristic algorithms are effective in solving complex real-world problems but require careful strategy selection and parameter tuning. Metaphorless population-based optimization algorithms have gained importance due to their simplicity and efficiency. However, research on their applicability for solving large systems of nonlinear equations is still incipient. This paper presents a review and detailed description of the main metaphorless optimization algorithms, including the Jaya and enhanced Jaya (EJAYA) algorithms, the three Rao algorithms, the best-worst-play (BWP) algorithm, and the new max–min greedy interaction (MaGI) algorithm. This article presents improved GPU-based massively parallel versions of these algorithms using a more efficient parallelization strategy. In particular, a novel GPU-accelerated implementation of the MaGI algorithm is proposed. The GPU-accelerated versions of the metaphorless algorithms developed were implemented using the Julia programming language. Both high-end professional-grade GPUs and a powerful consumer-oriented GPU were used for testing, along with a set of hard, large-scale nonlinear equation system problems to gauge the speedup gains from the parallelizations. The computational experiments produced substantial speedup gains, ranging from 33.9× to 561.8×, depending on the test parameters and the GPU used for testing. This highlights the efficiency of the proposed GPU-accelerated versions of the metaphorless algorithms considered. Full article

Bioinformatics Analysis of Human Papillomavirus 16 Integration in Cervical Cancer: Changes in MAGI-1 Expression in Premalignant Lesions and Invasive Carcinoma

HPV 16 integration is crucial for the onset and progression of premalignant lesions to invasive squamous cell carcinoma (ISCC) because it promotes the amplification of proto-oncogenes and the silencing of tumor suppressor genes; some of these are proteins with PDZ domains involved in homeostasis and cell polarity. Through a bioinformatics approach based on interaction networks, a group of proteins associated with HPV 16 infection, PDZ domains, and direct physical interaction with E6 and related to different hallmarks of cancer were identified. MAGI-1 was selected to evaluate the expression profile and subcellular localization changes in premalignant lesions and ISCC with HPV 16 in an integrated state in cervical cytology; the profile expression of MAGI-1 diminished according to lesion grade. Surprisingly, in cell lines CaSki and SiHa, the protein localization was cytoplasmic and nuclear. In contrast, in histological samples, a change in subcellular localization from the cytoplasm in low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL) to the nucleus in the high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) was observed; in in situ carcinomas and ISCC, MAGI-1 expression was absent. In conclusion, MAGI-1 expression could be a potential biomarker for distinguishing those cells with normal morphology but with HPV 16 integrated from those showing morphology-related uterine cervical lesions associated with tumor progression.
