Abstract

: Sensor and actuator networks have been the focus of a lot of research for quite a number of years now, and results in these fields had a tremendous influence on computer science as a whole. Take for example the fact that energy efficiency questions have never played a major role before, and today, there are journals, conferences, and complete research programs on this important issue. In general, sensor and actuator networks are considered to be an important part of the Future Internet, be it in the Internet-of-Things community, in Smart-City discussions, or in the more general field of Real-World Internet. Therefore, even though we have already come a long way, there is still a lot to do in order to make sensor and actuator networks usable and useful tools for everyday life in all kinds of domains. This new journal wants to provide a forum for researchers in the field to present their ideas and results and to discuss with others in order to advance the state of the art. [...]

How do we want to achieve this? Well, first, we publish different kinds of papers, namely regular research papers, reviews (including comprehensive reviews on complete sensor and actuator networks), and short communications. Our aim is to encourage scientists to publish their experimental and theoretical results in as much detail as possible. There is no restriction on the length of the papers. However, we want our authors to provide full experimental details so that all results reported can be reproduced. For that purpose, electronic files and software regarding the full details of the calculation and experimental procedure, if unable to be published in a normal way, can be deposited as supplementary material.

Second, we want to be quick. Our review cycles will on average be just a few weeks, and accepted papers will be published immediately. This guarantees that your research results will reach the community when they are still “fresh” and interesting, just as with conferences, or even better.

Third, the journal will be open access, so everybody in your community will be immediately able to access your published results, without any fee. At the same time, we aim to achieve highest quality standards by having every submission peer-reviewed by leading experts in the field.

The new journal covers more or less any aspect of sensor and actuator aspects. We encourage submissions for the following topics, but this is certainly not an exclusive list:

system architecture and operating systems

network hardware

sensor tasking and self-management

network services for time, localization and power management

communication and network protocols

data processing, storage and management

programming models and middleware for sensor/actuator networks

simulation of sensor/actuator networks

experimental facilities and test beds for sensor/actuator networks

global sensor networks

embedded systems

nano-sensor networks

applications in medical science, environment monitoring, manufacturing, automation and precision agriculture, etc.

security and privacy
