Advances in Antioxidant Extraction Processes

Dear Colleagues,

Antioxidants from natural sources have gained an increasing attention due to their protective functions in preserving the quality of food and pharmaceuticals by combating oxidative deterioration. Moreover, they play a vital role in the body by shielding against oxidative stress-induced damage and mitigating associated pathological conditions. Phenolics obtained from natural matrix are better source of antioxidants than unsafe synthetic chemicals which can potentially exhibit carcinogenic and toxic effects over time. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to identify novel sources of natural antioxidants and propose a green extraction process capable to recover them. The green extraction process implies use of environmentally-friendly instead organic solvents and simultaneous reduction of the solvent consumption and amount of wastes.

This special issue on “Advances in Antioxidant Extraction Processes” will foster recent advances in extraction processes, with emphasis on advantages of using green extraction processes over conventional ones, and their integration with aim to improve recovery of targeted antioxidants and/or to diminish consumption of resources. In order to boost impact, authors contributing to this Special Issue will be invited to deliver high quality studies focusing on recovery of phenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, vitamins and other representatives of antioxidants by employing emerging green extraction processes.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

• The development of integrated green extraction processes with aim to improve extraction yield of antioxidants
• The optimization of current extraction processes with defining dominant process parameters contributing to antioxidants concentration
• The comprehensive evaluation of advances in extraction processes of natural antioxidants
• The strategies on how to scale-up green extraction processes
