Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Activated sludge is a yellowish-brown floc-like mixture formed during wastewater treatment and houses a large population of bacteria-based microorganisms as well as moisture. In recent years, urbanization and the upgrading of wastewater treatment technologies have led to the production of more activated sludge. In addition, population growth poses a serious challenge to the sustainable development of societies, and increased energy consumption brings demands for the diversification of energy sources and the development of cleaner, renewable technologies. Activated sludge has a complex composition, containing both toxic and hazardous substances as well as abundant available resources; therefore, the resource utilization of sludge is a valuable research direction. With the increasing awareness of national environmental protection and the increasingly strict requirements for sustainable development, the resource utilization of sludge will become a new industry, not only able to improve environmental problems, but also bolstering energy security and the realization of sustainable development. The purpose of this Special Issue is to highlight research on new technologies and processes in activated sludge treatment. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. New technology for activated sludge treatment;
  2. The migration and release of pollutants from activated sludge treatment processes;
  3. The design and optimization of treatment systems for activated sludge;
  4. Life cycle assessment of activated sludge treatment.

Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
