Scaling Open Access with Integrity

Open access reached new levels in 2025, and MDPI evolved to meet that global demand from the scientific community. Over 669,000 manuscript submissions and more than 260,000 published articles reflect the confidence the research community places in our journals.

Sustaining quality at this scale requires broad investment in teams and technological advancements across the organisation, from doubling our AI and Research Integrity teams to embedding purpose-built tools, such as Reviewer Finder and Ethicality, directly into our editorial workflows.

Open Access has reached a defining moment. At MDPI, we see it not only as an opportunity but as a responsibility to continue investing in the people, technology, and ethical safeguards that make high-quality science publishing possible.

The People Behind the Publishing

Our workforce grew by 26% in 2025-we gained 1700 new colleagues across 22 offices in Asia, Europe, and North America, strengthening capabilities in research integrity, AI development, editorial operations, and institutional partnerships.

Local HR teams have professionalised recruitment and onboarding across all offices, while our Training department continues to build the foundation for long-term development. In a fast-moving field, we invest equally in continuous development, ensuring our people grow alongside open science and remain the essential bridge between our journals and the global academic community.

Delivering a Highly Rated Experience Across Our Community

MDPI continues to deliver a strong publishing experience for authors, reviewers, and Guest Editors, with satisfaction remaining high. Based on feedback collected in 2025 from more than 46,500 active stakeholders worldwide, 96% of authors, 85% of reviewers, and 89% of Guest Editors rated their experience as 'Excellent' or 'Good'. Authors particularly value our editorial support, efficiency, and user-friendly platform. These are not metrics we take for granted-they reflect the daily work of the people behind our publishing.

Rebuilt for Researchers

In 2025, we invested heavily in the platforms our authors, editors, and readers rely on daily. A ground-up rebuild of MDPI.com and a redesigned submission system (SuSy) mark the most significant technical overhauls we have undertaken, modernising the experience across every stage of the research publishing journey.

The new MDPI.com was launched to 30% of traffic by early 2026, with encouraging early results. Visitors are spending more time on the site and are less likely to leave without engaging. Across both platforms, a unified navigation design ensures researchers can move fluidly between browsing, submitting, and tracking their work.

Connecting and Elevating the Academic Community

Our global partnerships crossed 1000 IOAP agreements in 2025, including first-ever consortium deals in North America and 32 new society agreements-tangible measures of how deeply open access publishing has taken root across institutions worldwide. That trust is built as much through presence as through agreements. In 2025, we brought together 28,000 researchers through participation in 12 in-person and 48 virtual conferences.

These engagements are how we stay close to the researchers and institutions we serve-listening to their needs and ensuring that MDPI's commitment to open science is felt beyond the page.
