Dear Colleagues,
The journal Pharmaceuticals is planning to publish a Special Issue entitled “Recent Update of Gastroretentive and Intestinal Drug Delivery Systems”, and we are cordially inviting you to contribute with communications, research articles or high-quality review papers in this volume.
Gastroretentive and intestinal drug delivery systems have received significant attention in recent years due to their potential to improve drug efficacy and patient compliance. These technologies have the potential to revolutionize drug delivery and provide new treatment options for a variety of diseases. Different gastroretentive drug delivery systems are designed to prolong gastric retention and drug release times, and improve drug absorption, while intestinal drug delivery systems aim to target the drug to a specific site of absorption in the small or large intestine.
Recent upgrades in gastroretentive drug delivery systems include the development of various technologies such as floating drug delivery systems, mucoadhesive systems, and expandable systems. These technologies have been shown to improve drug bioavailability and reduce variability in drug release.
In the case of intestinal drug delivery systems, recent revises include the use of pH-sensitive and enzyme-sensitive polymers to enhance drug release at specific sites in the small intestine. Additionally, some of these systems have been focus on the development of colon-targeted drug delivery systems for the treatment of diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
This Special Issue intends to host research and review papers on the development of novel gastroretentive and intestinal drug delivery systems in the scientific areas of pharmaceutical technology, chemistry, biotechnology, and biomedicine. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, drug/excipient interactions, multiparticulate systems, single-unit systems, floating, swelling, mucoadhesive, high-density, enteric-coated, controlled-release, targeted-release and biodegradable systems, biological in vitro/ex vivo/in vivo evaluation of gastroretentive and intestinal formulations and dosage forms/cell interactions.
