This article examines how human relationships with nature in the design of the Tehran Grand Bazaar can impact customer loyalty, and how this impact has been affected by the recent pandemic. As one of the most popular retail settings of the ancient Silk Road, the Grand Bazaar has a long history of micro-scale retailing and customer loyalty. This article reviews international guidelines of sustainable design using content analysis, identifying the most frequent guidelines related to human relationships with nature. It then defines customer loyalty in terms of various important non-financial measures of micro-scale retailing. The present article describes the development and collection of a structured survey conducted before the pandemic (March 2019), during the pandemic (March 2021), and after the pandemic (March 2023). The analysis shows a moderate to high relationship between sustainable design elements of the Bazaar (in terms of human relationships with nature) and customer loyalty before the COVID-19 pandemic. While this relationship fell to a moderate level in the middle of the pandemic, it rose dramatically to 89% by the end of the third year when governments eased public health and safety protocols. The results reveal that by adapting sustainable strategies that enhance human relationships with nature, designers and stakeholders can create post-pandemic retail settings that generate high customer loyalty.

The exploitation of renewable energy resources is an effective option to respond to climate change challenges. Wind energy can be exploited more efficiently and effectively than any other renewable energy source. By switching from onshore wind energy projects to offshore, the positive aspects of onshore wind energy remain and, at the same time, no valuable onshore area is occupied, while their efficiency (e.g., capacity factor) is increased. Greece has a rich wind potential and the maritime region of Thrace is one of Greece’s maritime regions with the greatest potential for the development of offshore wind energy. The aim of the present paper is to identify the most appropriate sites for the deployment of offshore wind farms in the region of Thrace. The methodology includes (i) the delineation of the study area and the definition of the support structure of the wind turbine, (ii) the identification of seven (7) exclusion and fifteen (15) assessment criteria, (iii) the suitability analysis under five different zoning scenarios (equal weight, environmental, social, techno-economic, and researchers’ subjective), and (iv) the micro siting and qualitative assessment of the most suitable sites based on energy, environmental, social, and economic criteria. The methodology is based on the combined use of Geographical Information Systems (GISs), specifically ArcGIS Desktop version 10.8.1, wind assessment software tools (WaSPs), specifically WaSP version 12.8, and multi-criteria decision-making methods. The results of the paper illustrate that the optimal suitability area that is proposed for offshore wind farm deployment is located at the easternmost end of the Greek part of the Thracian Sea. The planning and the deployment of offshore wind farm projects should follow a holistic and environmentally driven approach to ensure the integrity of all habitats and species affected.

With technological development and the decrease in the price of electrical appliances for domestic consumers, combined with users’ desire for a certain level of comfort, the number of electrical devices in homes has increased. Although current equipment is largely energy-efficient, the high number of these devices, used simultaneously, has led to an increase in electricity consumption. Electrical installation in homes has been replaced in most cases, but the connections have remained the same, without any checks being carried out in terms of load and operational safety. This paper presents an exploratory case study based on a questionnaire answered by 678 individuals from Romania. The objectives of the questionnaire were to identify the characteristics of the domestic consumer and their opinion on the state of the installation, energy costs, and energy consumption. Based on the analysis, 74.15% of the respondents stated that the power installed in their homes as domestic consumers increased. Based on the analysis conducted on-site, the risk of fire outbreaks in the power supply columns of apartment buildings was identified. To avoid critical situations, it is necessary to periodically check the connection and supply columns so that they are functional and safe to operate.

Habitat quality is an important basis for human well-being and the achievement of sustainable development. Based on land-use data for the Bosten Lake Basin in 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2022, the PLUS and InVEST models are applied in this study to predict and analyze land-use changes and explore the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of the region’s habitat quality. Additionally, we use a geographic detector model to reveal the drivers of spatial variation in habitat quality. The results show that: (1) Land use in Bosten Lake Basin is dominated by grassland and bare land, with an area share of 93.21%. Habitat quality shows a trend of degradation followed by improvement, with a spatial pattern of high in the northwest and low in the southeast. (2) Habitat quality in 2030 increased from 2022 in all cases, with a mean of 0.354 for the natural development scenario, a maximum of 0.355 for the ecological development scenario, and a minimum of 0.353 for the economic development scenario. (3) The main drivers affecting habitat quality in the Bosten Lake watershed are DEM, mean annual precipitation (MAP), and GDP per capita. X1∩X4 (0.50) and X4∩X10 (0.51) are the interaction factors with the largest dominant effect in 2000, 2010 and 2020, respectively.

Rembang Regency is located on the north coast of Java Island, Central Java Province, Indonesia, which has many beaches ideal for tourism activities. Even though it has the charm of beaches, natural tourist destinations are still the primary choice compared to cultural and artificial sites. However, limited studies exist regarding standard indicators for assessing natural tourism potential in Rembang Regency, which is essential for identifying potential tourist locations. This research focuses on grouping indicators of natural tourism potential based on six main aspects: attractions, amenities, accommodation, activity, accessibility, and ancillary services, environment in tourist areas, and human resources considerations. A taxonomic model will be utilized to develop a procedure for determining natural tourism potential, including indicator weighing via a hierarchical analysis. The findings will yield a taxonomy model aiding information and knowledge management, fostering information sharing and utilization. Moreover, the established procedures will facilitate an accurate and efficient determination of natural tourism potential. This research aims to contribute to sustainable natural tourism management in Rembang Regency, preserving nature while enhancing the tourist experience.

The effects of submerged plant-induced calcium and phosphorus coprecipitation on the phosphorus cycle in aquatic environments and interspecific differences are still unclear. Herein, we selected Ceratophyllum demersum L. and Potamogeton crispus L. to construct a sediment–water-submerged plant system. We examined how phosphorus concentrations in the water, sediment, and plant ash changed over time with different phosphorus and calcium treatments and explored the effects of photosynthesis-induced calcium and phosphorus coprecipitation on water’s phosphorus cycle and variations between different submerged plant species. The main results were as follows: (1) The phosphorus reduction in the P. crispus system was less than that in the C. demersum system. (2) P. crispus had higher total ash phosphorus (TAP) values than C. demersum. (3) The sediment total phosphorus (STP) and its fractions with P. crispus were most affected by phosphorus concentration while those with C. demersum were most affected by time. Overall, the two submerged species exhibited different calcium and phosphorus coprecipitation levels and had distinct effects on the water-to-phosphorus cycle. When submerged plants are introduced to reduce and stabilize the phosphorus levels, plant interspecific differences in their induced calcium and phosphorus coprecipitation on water and phosphorus cycling must be fully assessed.

Partial shading significantly affects the performance of photovoltaic (PV) power systems, rendering traditional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods ineffective. This study proposes a novel hybrid MPPT algorithm integrating voltage scanning and modified Perturb and Observe (P&O) techniques to overcome the limitations posed by partial shading. This algorithm has a simple structure and does not require panel information such as the number of panels or voltage due to its voltage scanning feature. To test the proposed algorithm, a grid-connected PV power system with a power of 252.6 kW was created in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. In this power system, six different PS conditions, containing quite challenging situations, were listed in three different scenarios and simulated. The proposed algorithm was compared with the voltage scanning and P&O and voltage scanning and variable-step P&O methods. It was observed that the proposed algorithm has lower power fluctuations compared to the other two traditional methods. Additionally, this algorithm managed to achieve higher efficiency than the other methods in some cases.

Mountainous and rural territories are considered among the most vulnerable to the effects of the Climate Crisis. Their geographical and topographical conditions, together with the complexity of the system of relations between human and natural elements, amplify the impacts and risks associated with extreme climatic events. Therefore, the consequences on the socio-economic fabric are systemic and require an immediate response from all the actors in a region. Public administration and politics can play a pivotal role within the planning framework in contrasting the impacts of the climate crisis. This paper demonstrates the multi-level and multi-stakeholder approach applied during the development process of a regional adaptation strategy. The Autonomous Province of Trento has initiated an innovative approach to understanding and managing the effects of the climate crisis on its landscape and resources and has aligned the process of definition of its long-term strategy with the guidance provided by the EU Commission and the Italian Government. The methodology used is based on the tools provided by the Climate-ADAPT platform (in particular, the Regional Adaptation Support Tool—RAST), and the “impact chains” method is specifically implemented for climate risk assessment. The RAST is applied according to a multi-stakeholder and multi-level approach to capitalise on previously established and ongoing initiatives and working groups. The research suggests that the Climate Strategy model presented in this paper needs to be at the core of the broader framework adopted by the Autonomous Province of Trento and that it can represent an important example for other regions aiming to actively involve local stakeholders in acting for climate neutrality and resilience.

Many communities are working to enhance the sustainability of their physical, economic, and social systems. While economic and physical systems are routinely measured (e.g., money and energy), psychological and behavioral elements of social systems (norms, attitudes, and individual behavior) are seldom tracked. The objective of this research was to evaluate a potentially scalable approach to measure the impact of sustainability initiatives on these variables in a community engaged in holistic sustainability programming. Online survey data were collected in 2012 (N = 155) and 2016 (N = 137), measuring pro-environmental thought and behavior in two towns in Ohio: Oberlin, a community engaged in holistic efforts to enhance environmental sustainability; and a similar community (Berea) used as a control. Survey links were distributed via recruitment letters mailed to randomly selected community residents from a purchased mailing list. We used two (town) by two (time) between subjects’ ANOVAs to evaluate whether Oberlin saw predicted increases in sustainable thought and behavior from 2012 to 2016, compared to the control community. Despite verifiable participation in and awareness of sustainability programs in Oberlin, our survey results did not provide strong evidence that programs resulted in the desired changes in attitudes, norms, and individual behaviors. Recycling attitudes and LED bulb installation were two exceptions. We conclude that assessing the psychological and behavioral dimensions of sustainability poses particular challenges. We encountered ceiling effects and inadequate statistical power. Possibly, norms and attitudes are not easily influenced even by a holistic community-wide effort.

This paper analyzes how export margins responded to an intermediate input supply shock caused by the 2020 lockdown in China. We use regression decomposition with triple and quadruple difference-in-differences models to identify causal impacts and mitigate potential heterogeneity in transaction-level customs data from the Bangladesh apparel manufacturing industry. The triple difference estimate shows that the average export value per firm–product–destination combination declined by approximately 65%, leading to a decrease in overall exports of woven apparel from Bangladesh. The input supply shock also adversely affected the subgroups of firms across various firm-level characteristics along the intensive margin. Moreover, the export market share decomposition reveals that the shock significantly affected intensive margins by decreasing incumbents’ market allocation by 9%. An equivalent increase in extensive margins led to a readjustment in the market allocation, leading to fewer market leavers and slightly more new market entrants. Our results indicate that Bangladesh’s exports mostly decreased due to the smaller quantities of products exported rather than there being fewer firms, destinations, or products involved in export trade. There were significant market share reallocations that occurred after the Chinese input supply shock. An appropriate policy stance is required for sustainable export sector growth strategies, which will enhance the country’s defense against potential future shocks and foster the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Bangladesh.

As society continues to age, people are becoming more concerned about their health care. This has led to an increase in the demand for medical products in urban areas, emphasizing the need for regular and prompt deliveries. However, the existing logistics centers are located in the suburbs of Seoul, a metropolitan city, which makes it challenging to ensure timely delivery. To address this issue, this study aims to establish new logistics centers in urban areas, particularly in Seoul, while minimizing CO2 emissions from delivery vehicles in alignment with sustainability efforts. The scientific gap addressed in and the novelty of this paper is that the input parameters are prepared based on actual data from a medical company in Korea to reflect reality, and the mathematical model-based optimization technique is applied to determine the optimal location of a new logistics center. The genetic algorithm is developed to solve the proposed mathematical model by deriving optimal or near-optimal solutions. Furthermore, the numerical experiment examined the impact of establishing a new logistics center in one of the candidate areas of local governments in Seoul by considering environmental impact. As a result, the new logistics network can reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 66.74% compared to the existing logistics network.

Cultural industries constitute a crucial part of the sustainable economy. In accordance with the principles of socialist public ownership nations, the economic benefits of cultural industries should be ultimately transformed into more significant social benefits. Guided by the policies and requirements of the Chinese government concerning the social benefits of cultural industries, this paper innovatively integrates Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Tobit models to empirically analyze the social benefits and their influencing factors within China’s cultural industries. The findings indicate that the social benefits of China’s cultural industries are currently in a state of diminishing returns to scale, with fiscal support and educational levels significantly enhancing the industry’s social benefits. This paper recommends that policymakers aiming to convert the economic benefits of cultural industries into social benefits more systematically and effectively should focus on enhancing the quality of industry outputs.

In emerging countries like Romania, research on food loss and waste remains relatively scarce. This is mainly because the phenomenon, along with its repercussions and ramifications, is inadequately understood by all stakeholders within the agri-food chain. Consumer behaviour, with a specific focus on sustainability and waste reduction, has undergone a noticeable transformation on a global scale. Researchers have been emphasising the imperative for effective awareness and education strategies in this respect. Diverse studies contribute valuable insights into household food behaviour, identifying possible drivers and suggesting counteractive techniques. This study poses inquiries about consumer feelings regarding the food waste phenomenon and perceptions of the Romanian agri-food chain, as well as the influence of education on their awareness and adoption of sustainable eating habits. The paper delineates the semi-structured interview-based methodology, shows results through word-cloud and sentiment analysis, and engages in discussions on consumer behaviour through four distinct clusters, concluding with limitations, managerial implications and outlining future research directions. The findings underscore the relevance of emotions and sentiments in understanding consumer behaviour, shedding light on the nuanced factors influencing food waste. Notably, the accuracy of interpretation is higher when drawn from interviews rather than online comments or reviews made by unknown individuals. This distinction increases the credibility of the insights gained from the qualitative study. By analysing consumer sentiments, the study aids in implementing strategies to improve customer satisfaction and reduce food waste, fostering a more sustainable and consumer-centric approach in the agri-food sector worldwide.

Fog in mine air intake roadways is a non-negligible disaster that seriously reduces the visibility of the roadway, affects vehicle transportation and the safe passage of personnel, and jeopardizes the safe production of the mine. This paper applies both field testing and numerical simulation to explore fog formation conditions and the effects of inlet air temperature and humidity on the fog zone length within the Wangjialing Mine’s air intake roadway in Shanxi, China. First, based on the consideration of the relationship between the moisture gain of surrounding rock and the temperature with humidity of the air flow, the fog generation and distribution law model of the air intake roadway was established. Based on this model, the critical inlet air temperature and the critical inlet air relative humidity for fogging in the Wangjialing Mine air intake roadway were determined. In addition, we found that the fogging point inside the roadway shifted forward continuously with the increase in inlet air temperature and inlet air relative humidity, and the length of the fog zone expands parabolically in response to these rising conditions.

Over a comprehensive 5-year assessment, and extrapolating it prospectively until 2025, a thorough examination was conducted of productive agrobiodiversity in nine rural agricultural districts across Peru. The present study involved in-depth interviews with 180 representative farmers of the Coast, Highlands, and Jungle natural regions. Employing the Shannon–Weiner diversity index and the Margalef species richness index, the dynamics within years and across different zones were analyzed. Utilizing quadratic trend models, we assessed the frequency of each crop, aiming for the optimal fit concerning absolute deviation from the mean, mean squared deviation, and mean absolute percentage error. These findings revealed five distinct crop types—tuberous, fruits, cereals, legumes, and roots—distributed across 25 diverse families. Looking ahead to 2025, our projections indicated positive trends in 15 families and negative trends in 9 crop families. The nuanced mathematical distinctions observed in crop management decisions varied significantly depending on the specific area and year, underscoring the importance of localized considerations in agricultural planning.

In an era focused on deepening green sustainable development, improving corporate ESG performance has become a theoretical focal point. Starting from the positional attributes of the interlocking director network, this study investigates the influence of a company’s position within this network on its ESG performance among China’s A-share-listed companies from 2009 to 2022. It utilizes Huazheng ESG ratings from the Wind database and employs regression models, analyses, endogeneity, and propensity score matching tests via Stata15.0 to probe the internal mechanisms at play. Research findings indicate that corporations at the core of the interlocking director network exhibit significantly better ESG performance compared to those in peripheral positions. The interlocking director network enhances corporate ESG performance by improving internal control levels. Media attention positively influences the effect of the interlocking director network on corporate ESG performance. Further analysis reveals that the beneficial impact of the interlocking director network on ESG performance is more pronounced in highly marketized corporations, those outside of heavy pollution industries, and those with a higher proportion of female directors. Economically, the positive effect of the interlocking director network on ESG performance enhances both earnings per share and total factor productivity. This study offers a novel pathway for enhancing corporate sustainability in emerging economies through the lens of the interlocking director network, drawing on China’s experience. It aims to guide emerging markets in fostering ESG practices among corporations, thus offering theoretical insights for enhancing ESG performance.

The present paper addresses a comprehensive historical assessment of water consumption, demand, and supply in Saudi Arabia, along with future projections regarding water balance, in terms of demand and supply by source in various sectors. Being an arid region, Saudi Arabia experiences scorching heat, low precipitation, a high rate of potential evaporation, and the absence of permanent water bodies over the territory. Groundwater contributes almost 61% of total available water, while the recharge rate is negligible. However, few widyan (ephemeral streams) systems exists to satisfy water demand, which could contribute to approximately one year of domestic water consumption if managed efficiently. The study also predicts water consumption scenarios for the next three consecutive development plans, i.e., the 10th plan (2015–2019), 11th plan (2020–2024), and 12th plan (2025–2029). The analysis shows that water consumption may decline significantly in the future, if the present rate of decline continues. Scenario I, if the current rate is assumed, provides a decrease in consumption of 14.36, 12.66, and 11.15 BCM for 10th, 11th, and 12th plans, respectively. Moreover, the domestic and industrial sectors will consume more water in the future. In the same way, scenarios II and III represent a decline in total water consumption, along with that of agriculture, while domestic and industrial water usage would increase, thus improving environmental sustainability.

Digital economy has emerged as one of the primary driving forces for economic globalization. However, assessing digital economy development in a robust and scientific manner remains a great challenge. This paper proposes an evaluation system with measurement errors correction to accurately research the regional differences in and the spatial-temporal evolution characteristics of digital economy development in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YEB), combining the entropy method, the Dagum–Gini coefficient, an σ convergence model and grey correlation analysis. The results present that the digital economy development index in the YEB rose from 2012 to 2021, with the greatest weight being social livelihood benefits. Meanwhile, there were noticeable regional differences in digital economy development in the YEB; in particular, the middle reaches showed obvious convergence. The grey correlation degree between the influence factors and the digital economy development ranged from 0.5286 to 0.9144, demonstrating a robust positive correlation. The theoretical framework of this paper integrates economic development models with advanced statistical analysis techniques, providing a robust analytical perspective for examining the complexities of digital economy evolution. The insights offer a blueprint for policymakers seeking to foster a robust and equitable digital economy, underscoring the potential of data-driven policy formulations in navigating the intricate landscape of economic globalization.

Nowadays, there are many studies with a significant focus on affordable housing. The relevance of this theme, which is usually the central object of public housing policies, requires an updated review of the problems and challenges to be overcome, especially in terms of sustainability, in favor of an improvement in the quality of products delivered to beneficiaries. This research concentrates on applying the sustainability concept to affordable housing, emphasizing technical, social, and governance aspects. A novel classification framework is introduced, encompassing these aspects in the context of sustainability integrated with affordable housing. A systematic literature review is conducted and more than 100 articles are examined based on bibliometric and bibliographic analyses to highlight the main dimensions and topics involved in the housing public policy sphere. The study has been elaborated based on collecting relevant materials, building a descriptive analysis of the literature examined, highlighting the classification structure that categorizes the studies examined, and evaluating the material identified based on the classification structure. The outcomes aim to spotlight the diverse dimensions of sustainable affordable housing and associated research themes. Furthermore, the research outlines deficiencies in current approaches and outlines a future research agenda for implementing sustainability in affordable housing. It establishes a strong connection between technical, social, and governance aspects of affordable housing and sustainability, considering anticipated approaches, techniques, and challenges.

Organic agriculture based on the participatory guarantee system (PGS) is frequently touted as a tool for improving ecosystem sustainability and self-reliance and for alleviating the poverty of smallholder farmers in Thailand. However, specific criteria must be fulfilled for products to be certified organic. In this paper, we investigate the similarities and differences between three cases of organic agricultural production (based on the participatory guarantee system) in four provinces in northeastern Thailand: Nong Bua Lam Phu, Nakhon Phanom, Ubon Ratchathani, and Nakhon Ratchasima. A total of 135 smallholder farmers were selected to act as informants, and semi-structured interviews were held. The participatory guarantee system was utilized, considering the farmers’ diverse agricultural backgrounds and socio-economic conditions. For agriculture to be adapted with the ultimate aim of sustainability, policy support will be necessary in the form of financial measures and capacity building.
