Microphysiological systems (MPS) comprise a number of bioengineering breakthroughs that reproduce organ architecture and function in vitro. Fueled by stem-cell technologies, a broad variety of human models and test systems have emerged, which make relevant experimental tools broadly available through international and multidisciplinary collaborations.

Conference series are a key tool for forming a community and accelerating scientific developments, their implementation, and global harmonization. They provide an overview of the state of the art in such dynamic and diverse fields, enabling transfer learning. A global conference on MPS was identified by opinion leaders in the field as a key step forward in the maturation and harmonization of the area.

Over 40 international organizations and companies have teamed up for a series of annual MPS World Summits to present the latest scientific achievements, discuss the advances and challenges, and enable communication between young and newly interested scientists and pioneers of the MPS field.

This conference is the successor of the "International Conference on Microchannels and Minichannels" (ICMM), held since 2003, and the "International Conference on Nanochannels, Microchannels and Minichannels" (ICNMM). The inaugural µFIP conference was held virtually in 2021 and in person at UC Irvine in 2022 and at Northwestern University in 2023. Given the importance of climate change and the water–energy nexus, the scientific objective of µFIP is to bring together the phase change and single-phase heat transfer, multi-phase flow, bio-chemical and bio-medical engineering, and micro flow process communities with an emphasis on energy applications with components exhibiting microchannel flow or microscale surface phenomena (e.g., droplets, thin films, bubbles, etc.).

Our program provides a unique opportunity for researchers in interdisciplinary topic areas to exchange ideas and discuss future directions. Both fundamental and applied sciences are disseminated, with academic, national lab, and industrial participation. The µFIP conferences are intended to provide an active platform for the exchange of information and the identification of research needs in this emerging area across multiple lengths and time scales.

In recent times, science and technology have made rapid progress. The rapid development in the fields of aerospace, energy, information, weapons and equipment, large scientific installations, and other technological fields, such as space observation, large light sources, EUV photocurrent machines, synchronous radiation, etc., have highlighted the urgent demand for advanced optical manufacturing technology. Advanced optical manufacturing technology is moving toward optical high-performance requirements and intelligent manufacturing, presenting the trend of the multi-disciplinary and integrative development of nano–nano and even atomic-level ultra-precision manufacturing, ultra-precision measurement, intelligent sensing and control, materials, mechanics, and other disciplines.

The "2nd Conference on Advanced Optical Manufacturing Technologies & Applications & 4th Forum of Young Scientists on Advanced Optical Manufacturing " hosted by the Chinese Society for Optical Engineering (CSOE) will be held in Xi'an, China, in July 2024 and will focus on discussing the latest developments in advanced optical manufacturing technology and equipment.

The Portuguese Society for Optics and Photonics is organizing the VI International Conference on Applications of Optics and Photonics, AOP2024, to be held in Aveiro, Portugal, from July 16 to 19, 2024.

In line with the success of SPOF’s previous conferences—AOP2011 in Braga (www.optica.pt/aop2011), AOP2014 in Aveiro (www.aop2014.org), AOP2017 at the University of Algarve in Faro (www.aop2017.org), AOP2019 at the University of Lisbon in Portugal’s capital (www.aop2019.org), and AOP2021 at the UNESCO World Heritage historical town of Guimarães in the north of Portugal (www.aop2022.org)—our 6th meeting will further reinforce the international prestige of the AOP conference and will be a reference meeting in optics and photonics in 2024.

In the open friendly environment of SPOF’s conferences, this forum will be an excellent opportunity to further foster the establishment of the widest range of cooperation projects and relationships with colleagues and institutions from Portugal and from all around the world. Being open to contributions in all topics of optics and photonics and application fields, with this conference, we expect to review the state of the art in these subjects and to foresee and discuss the future of research in optics and photonics. A good number of plenary and key lectures by world-renowned researchers in all fields of optics and photonics will make the scientific program more varied and exciting. We expect to have presentations of research labs and industries to promote and facilitate the setup of future new collaborations. A special space will be reserved for photonics spinoffs and young companies and entrepreneurs. As is tradition in our AOP conferences, an enjoyable social program will be organized, further contributing to the setup and cementing of long-lasting friendships and cooperation. Peer-reviewed accepted papers will be published in an indexed proceedings book and in Special Editions or Sections of ISI/SCI journals in the fields of optics and photonics.
