Cover Story: We tested the antibacterial activity of a lysine-modified cationic dendrimer (CD) against resistant Gram-negative bacteria, and, knowing that guanidine groups and two isomeric triterpenoid acids are active against Gram-positive bacteria, prepared lysine/arginine-modified dendrimers entrapping ursolic and oleanolic acids (UOA), named UOACDs. UOACDs showed significant antibacterial activity against 15 Gram-positive isolates, and it was established that UOA did not contribute to the antibacterial effects observed. Particularly, lysine was critical for the potency, while arginine was critical for redirecting activity against Gram-positive species. A high cationic character with a balanced lysine/arginine content produced remarkable antimicrobial effects (MIC = 0.5–8.7 µM). View this paper.
