Cover Story: Acute myelogenous leukemia is a life-threatening disease characterized by a large and inappropriate production of clonal myeloid blasts in the bone marrow. Cytogenetic tests are valuable in predicting the therapy effect and guiding treatment. Inversion of chromosome 16 is a cytogenetic abnormality that gives a more favorable prognosis. However, it is also associated with extramedullary manifestations of the leukemia and can therefore mimic symptoms of solid tumors. We have a case where the presenting signs and symptoms of the underlying acute myelogenous leukemia were due to a compression, by a leukemic tumor mass, of the renal pelvis and secondary pain and kidney failure.
