Cover Story: Work sampling is a procedure in which the proportions of shift time spent by workers or machines on different activities (within productive work or losses) are estimated on the basis of a sufficient number of random observations of activities over a selected period of time. The work sampling procedure is well standardized, but improvements can be made in the evaluation of the observations. We present our further development of the decision-making process based on work sampling data. With the correlation analysis introduced, we obtain a first signal that some activities may trigger the occurrence of another activity that may be without added value or represent a loss. It is possible to uncover patterns of behavior that would have been overlooked with the basic method. View this paper
