Cover Story: In the search for new, better tools to fight cancer we have developed a new hybrid nanoparticulate system composed of colloidally stabilized superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles coated with curcumin containing water-soluble polymeric conjugate. The presented system has a unique structure where the 13 nm primary particles, separated by a thin layer of chitosan derivative, are agglomerated to form larger particles (50 nm in diameter) and additionally coated with alginate-curcumin conjugate. These particles showed potential as delivery vehicle for curcumin, as they were efficiently up taken by cells. Magnetic hyperthermia studies have revealed that our nanoparticles show also high specific absorption rate (SAR) of 280 [W/g] and are both safe and stable under magnetic hyperthermia conditions.
