Recent Advances in Biomass Conversion for Clean Energy and Environmental Sustainability
Topic Information
Dear Colleagues,
The transition toward a carbon-neutral society requires sustainable technologies capable of converting renewable biomass and organic waste into clean energy, value-added chemicals, functional carbon materials, and environmental solutions. Recent advances in thermochemical, biochemical, catalytic, and integrated conversion technologies have significantly improved the efficiency, selectivity, and economic feasibility of biomass utilization while supporting circular economy and net-zero emission goals.
This Topic aims to showcase the latest developments in biomass conversion technologies for clean energy production and environmental sustainability. We welcome original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and communications covering biomass pyrolysis, gasification, hydrothermal processing, anaerobic digestion, catalytic biomass upgrading, hydrogen production, biochar and carbon-based materials, carbon capture and utilization, waste valorization, process intensification, techno-economic analysis, life cycle assessment, and AI-driven process optimization. Contributions focusing on biomass-derived functional materials for catalysis, environmental remediation, energy storage, sensing, and sustainable manufacturing are particularly encouraged.
By bringing together multidisciplinary research from academia, industry, and government laboratories, this Topic seeks to promote innovative biomass utilization strategies that advance sustainable energy systems, resource recovery, and environmental protection while accelerating the transition toward a resilient circular bioeconomy.

Preprints.org is a multidisciplinary platform offering a preprint service designed to facilitate the early sharing of your research. It supports and empowers your research journey from the very beginning.
MDPI Topics is collaborating with Preprints.org and has established a direct connection between MDPI journals and the platform. Authors are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity by posting their preprints at Preprints.org prior to publication:
- Share your research immediately: disseminate your ideas prior to publication and establish priority for your work.
- Safeguard your intellectual contribution: Protect your ideas with a time-stamped preprint that serves as proof of your research timeline.
- Boost visibility and impact: Increase the reach and influence of your research by making it accessible to a global audience.
- Gain early feedback: Receive valuable input and insights from peers before submitting to a journal.
- Ensure broad indexing: Web of Science (Preprint Citation Index), Google Scholar, Crossref, SHARE, PrePubMed, Scilit and Europe PMC.
