The Memory Superiority Effect of Induced Insight in Semantic Versus Perceptual Levels

Previous studies have established that insight enhances memory across a variety of tasks. However, it remains unclear whether memory performance differs between perceptual and semantic insights. To address this issue, this study employed a learning–testing paradigm with Chinese riddles. In the learning phase, individuals judged whether they had grasped the relationship between each riddle and its solution (a Chinese character) under four conditions created by crossing match status (matched vs. unmatched) with riddle type (visual-rule vs. semantic-rule). During the testing phase, they performed immediate and delayed recognition tasks, judging whether each presented character was old or new. The results showed that, relative to trials on which riddles were not solved (primarily unmatched riddles), participants exhibited higher hit rates, recognition rates, and retrospective confidence judgment (RCJ) in both immediate and delayed recognition tasks when they experienced sudden insight into matched riddles. This reflects a memory advantage for insight induced by solution-appropriate processing. Moreover, hit rates, recognition rates, and memory confidence judgment accuracy were consistently higher for semantic insight than for perceptual insight, regardless of match condition (significant main effects with no interaction). In contrast, memory confidence judgment was higher for semantic (vs. perceptual) insight under matched conditions but not under unmatched conditions (significant interaction). Collectively, these findings suggest that insight yields better memory performance when it operates at the semantic level than at the perceptual level. Full article

Virtual Body Ownership Illusion (Virtual BOI) refers to the perceptual, cognitive, and behavioral changes that occur due to the illusion that a virtual body is one’s own actual body. Recent research has focused on inducing Virtual Body Ownership Illusion (Virtual BOI) using various physical conditions of VR environments such as haptic feedback and 360-degree immersion, among others. The level of Virtual BOI has been recognized as an important factor in VR-based clinical therapy programs where patient immersion is crucial. However, a common issue is the lack of standardized evaluation tools for Virtual BOI, with most experiments relying on ad hoc tools based on experimental conditions or lacking consideration for the physical design elements of VR. This measurement tool was designed to consider the characteristics of recent VR devices, such as haptics and hand tracking, in the design of experiments and questionnaires. The tool is composed of sub-attributes related to VR technology, including Embodiment, Presence, Visuo-tactile, Visuo-proprioceptive, and Visuo-Motor. Based on a review of the existing literature, we hypothesized that the Virtual BOI scores would vary depending on manipulation methods, viewpoints, and haptic conditions. An experiment was conducted with 39 participants, who performed the same task under four different conditions using a virtual hand. Virtual BOI scores were assessed using the evaluation tool developed for this study. The questionnaire underwent CFA, and three items with factor loadings below 0.5 were removed, resulting in a total of 14 items. Each subscale demonstrated high reliability, with Cronbach’s alpha values greater than 0.60. When developing experiments, clinical programs, or VR content related to Virtual BOI, the evaluation tool presented in this study can be used to assess the level of Virtual BOI. Additionally, by considering technological elements such as haptics and hand tracking, VR environments can be designed to enhance the level of Virtual BOI. Full article

Background/Objectives: With the rising ubiquity of digital media and screens in everyday life, toddlers are increasingly exposed to different screens from an early age (i.e., television, computer, tablet, phone). However, few studies have examined the effect of these screens on toddlers’ perceptual development. Since tactile exploration skills are necessary for environmental discovery and overall development, the current research investigates the links between screen-use habits and the tactile exploration skills (with visual control) of 6- to 36-month-old toddlers. Methods: The study involved observing the interactions of 135 toddlers with various objects and assessing the complexity of their visuo-tactile exploration strategies through two original experimental tasks. Data concerning screen habits and other relevant factors, such as socio-economic level, were collected using a parental questionnaire. Results: Toddlers with greater screen exposure time demonstrated weaker tactile exploration skills and employed less age-appropriate exploration strategies. Socio-economic factors and parental engagement in alternative activities significantly influenced these developmental outcomes. Conclusions: These findings emphasize the importance of reducing screen time and promoting interactive co-viewing and alternative activities to mitigate the negative effects of screen exposure. Further longitudinal research is needed to determine the long-term impacts of early screen exposure on tactile exploration and overall psychological development. Full article

Brain abnormalities detected in fetal life are being increasingly recognized. Child neurologists are often involved in fetal consultations, and specific fetal neurology training has been implemented in many countries. Pediatric neurologists are asked to examine the data available and to contribute to the definition of the long-term outcomes. Ventriculomegaly, posterior fossa malformations, and agenesis/dysgenesis of corpus callosum are among the most common reasons for antenatal neurological consultations. Fetuses with central nervous system and extra-CNS anomalies should ideally be managed in secondary/tertiary hospitals where obstetricians who are experts in fetal medicine and pediatric specialists are available. Obstetricians play a critical role in screening, performing detailed neurosonography, and referring to other specialists for additional investigations. Clinical geneticists are frequently asked to propose diagnostic tests and counsel complex fetal malformations whose phenotypes may differ from those during postnatal life. Advances in fetal MRI and genetic investigations can support the specialists involved in counseling. Nevertheless, data interpretation can be challenging, and it requires a high level of expertise in a multidisciplinary setting. Postnatally, child neurologists should be part of an integrated multidisciplinary follow-up, together with neonatologists and pediatricians. The neurodevelopmental outcomes should be assessed at least up to school age. Children should be evaluated with formal tests of their gross motor, cognitive, language, fine motor/visuo-perceptual skills, and their behavior. In this perspective, fetal neurology can be regarded as the beginning of a long journey which continues with a prolonged, structured follow-up, support to the families, and transition to adult life. A review of the most common conditions is presented, along with the long-term outcomes and a proposal of the neurodevelopmental follow-up of children with CNS malformation which are diagnosed in uterus. This article aims to provide in-depth insight into how consumers perceive recycled materials in comparison with natural raw materials at both the perceptual and attitudinal levels. To this end, we combined classic self-reported measures of sensory aspects, preferences, environmental attitudes, and consumption habits together with physiological measures of cognitive–emotional processing. Three different materials—two recycled materials, M2 and M3, and one raw material, M1—were chosen for inspection through three different sensory conditions, which we refer to as channels —visual, tactile, and visuo-tactile. The assignation of materials to sensory channels was counterbalanced so that each participant evaluated only one of the materials per channel. Although participants in general were not very accurate in discriminating between the materials, self-reported sensory evaluations showed that M3 (a recycled material that is made to look non-recycled), was clearly less liked. Meanwhile, the psychophysiological analyses revealed higher levels of electrodermal activity for the tactile evaluations of both recycled materials (M2 and M3). Finally, the results from the attitudes and habits evaluations indicate that the participants had positive environmental attitudes yet poor consumption habits. Altogether, these results suggest that some sensorial properties differ between recycled materials and natural raw materials and that there is a chance to improve and implement new consumption habits. The implications of these results are further discussed both in terms of suggestions for designers and methodological recommendations for researchers. Full article

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS) represent an emerging health problem on a global scale, as they are responsible for a significant contribution to the burden of disability in Western countries. Limited numbers of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diagnostic markers are available for each disease (amyloid and tau deposition markers for AD and oligoclonal bands for MS) representing mostly state markers that provide few, if any, clues about the severity of the clinical phenotype. α-CGRP is a neuropeptide implied in nociception, vasodilation, synaptic plasticity and immune functions. This neuropeptide is expressed in encephalic regions connected to memory, attention, autonomic and behavioral functions and is also expressed by spinal motor neurons. The present work confronted α-CGRP levels between 19 AD, 27 MS and 17 control subjects using an ELISA/EIA assay. We measured higher CSF α-CGRP contents in control subjects with respect to AD, as shown in previous studies, as well as in MS patients in comparison to AD. The control subjects and MS patients did not significantly differ between each other. We did not observe a relationship between CSF protein content, albumin quotient and α-CGRP. We also describe, retrospectively, an association between higher CSF CGRP content and higher MRI overall lesion count in MS and between lower α-CGRP and worse attention and visuo-perceptual skills in AD. We speculate that α-CGRP could be differentially involved in both disabling diseases. Full article

Body image disturbances (BIDs) have been widely studied using virtual reality (VR) devices that induce a full body illusion (FBI) and allow manipulation of the individual’s perceptual and affective experiences of the body. This study aimed to assess whether the induction of the FBI over a virtual body would produce changes in body-related anxiety and BIDs using a new whole-body visuo-tactile stimulation procedure. Fifty non-clinical participants were randomly assigned to synchronous or asynchronous visuo-tactile groups. During the pre-assessment, all participants filled in BIDs and body-anxiety questionnaires. Then, they were embodied into two virtual bodies (VBs): firstly, with their real measurements, and secondly, with a larger-size body. Body image disturbances, body anxiety, fear of gaining weight, and FBI levels were assessed after exposure to each avatar. All participants in both conditions showed higher levels of BIDs and body anxiety after owning the larger-size VB than after owning the real-size VB (p < 0.05). The synchronous visuo-tactile group had higher scores, although the differences did not reach statistical significance. This study provides evidence of the usefulness of this new embodiment-based technique to induce changes in BIDs or body anxiety in a non-clinical sample, being suitable for use in future body image interventions.
