Teacher education faces persistent challenges, including limited access to authentic field experiences and a disconnect between theoretical instruction and classroom practice. While virtual reality (VR) simulations offer an alternative, most are constrained by inflexible design and lack scalability, failing to mirror the complexity of real teaching environments. This study introduces TeacherGen@i, a generative AI (GenAI)-enhanced VR simulation designed to provide pre-service teachers with immersive, adaptive teaching practice through realistic GenAI agents. Using an explanatory case study with a mixed-methods approach, the study examines the simulation’s usability, design challenges, and instructional utility within a university-based teacher preparation course. Data sources included usability surveys and reflective journals, analyzed through thematic coding and computational linguistic analysis using LIWC. Findings suggest that TeacherGen@i facilitates meaningful development of teaching competencies such as instructional decision-making, classroom communication, and student engagement, while also identifying notable design limitations related to cognitive load, user interface design, and instructional scaffolding. This exploratory research offers preliminary insights into the integration of generative AI in teacher simulations and its potential to support responsive and scalable simulation-based learning environments. Artificial intelligence (AI) holds considerable promise to transform education, from personalizing learning to enhancing teaching efficiency, yet it simultaneously introduces significant concerns regarding ethical implications and responsible implementation. This exploratory survey investigated the perceptions of 376 teachers, university students, and future educators from the University of Salerno area concerning AI integration in education. Data were collected via a comprehensive digital questionnaire, divided into sections on personal data, AI’s perceived impact, its usefulness, and specific applications in education. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, including mean, mode, standard deviation, and 95% confidence intervals, were applied to the Likert scale responses. Results indicated a general openness to AI as a supportive tool for personalized learning and efficiency. However, significant reservations emerged regarding AI’s capacity to replace the human role. For instance, 69% of participants disagreed that AI tutors could match human feedback efficiency, and strong opposition was found against AI replacing textbooks (81% disagreement) or face-to-face lessons (87% disagreement). Conversely, there was an overwhelming consensus on the necessity of careful and conscious AI use (98% agreement). Participants also exhibited skepticism regarding AI’s utility for younger learners (e.g., 80% disagreement for ages 0–6), while largely agreeing on its benefit for adult learning. Strong support was observed for AI’s role in providing simulations and virtual labs (89% agreement) and developing interactive educational content (94% agreement). This study underscores a positive inclination towards AI as an enhancement tool, balanced by a strong insistence on preserving human interaction in education, highlighting the need for thoughtful integration and training. This article investigates the revolutionary potential of AI-powered virtual assistants in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) environments, concentrating primarily on their impact on special needs schooling. We investigate the complex characteristics of these virtual assistants, the influential elements affecting their development and implementation, and the joint efforts of educational institutions and technology developers, using a rigorous quantitative approach. Our research also looks at strategic initiatives aimed at effectively integrating AI into educational practices, addressing critical issues including infrastructure, teacher preparedness, equitable access, and ethical considerations. Our findings highlight the promise of AI technology, emphasizing the ability of AI-powered virtual assistants to provide individualized, immersive learning experiences adapted to the different needs of students with special needs. Furthermore, we find strong relationships between these virtual assistants’ features and deployment tactics and their subsequent impact on educational achievements. This study contributes to the increasing conversation on harnessing cutting-edge technology to improve educational results for all learners by synthesizing current research and employing a strong methodological framework. Our analysis not only highlights the promise of AI in increasing student engagement and comprehension but also emphasizes the importance of tackling ethical and infrastructure concerns to enable responsible and fair adoption. Background/Objectives: Executive function (EF) difficulties are increasingly recognized as closely linked to ADHD, particularly when assessed via rating scales. Methods: The present study investigated the nature of these associations, using the Conners 3 Rating Scales to assess ADHD symptoms and the Executive Function Questionnaire (EFQU) to assess EF impairments, in a sample of 1068 children (40.8% males, 38.8% females) aged 7–14 years (M = 10.7, SD = 1.74). Results: Both parent and teacher ratings revealed strong correlations, particularly between inattentive symptoms and EF difficulties, across multiple executive domains. To examine whether these associations stemmed from construct or phrasing overlap, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted. The results demonstrate that the Conners 3 and the EFQU capture distinct latent dimensions of functioning, with virtually no overlap in item content. Conclusions: The strength and consistency of the associations between these latent factors support the interpretation that, although conceptually distinct, ADHD symptoms and EF impairments are empirically intertwined in everyday functioning, as consistently reported by both parents and teachers. Interestingly, teachers provided more integrated views of behavior, while parents tended to distinguish ADHD and EF traits more clearly. These findings underscore the importance of multi-informant assessment and contextual variability in understanding children’s functioning. Full article

Emergency preparedness training in organizations frequently involves simple evacuation drills triggered by fire alarms, limiting the opportunities for broader skill development. Digital technologies, particularly virtual reality (VR), offer promising methods to enhance learning for handling incidents and evacuations. However, implementing VR-based training remains challenging due to unclear integration strategies within organizational practices and a lack of empirical evidence of VR’s effectiveness. This paper explores how VR-based training tools can be implemented in schools to enhance emergency preparedness among students, teachers, and staff. Following a design science research process, data were collected from a questionnaire-based study involving 12 participants and an exploratory study with 13 participants. The questionnaire-based study investigates initial attitudes and willingness to adopt VR training, while the exploratory study assesses the VR prototype’s usability, realism, and perceived effectiveness for emergency preparedness training. Despite a limited sample size and technical constraints of the early prototype, findings indicate strong student enthusiasm for gamified and immersive learning experiences. Teachers emphasized the need for technical and instructional support to regularly utilize VR training modules, while firefighters acknowledged the potential of VR tools, but also highlighted the critical importance of regular drills and professional validation. The relevance of the results of utilizing VR in this context is further discussed in terms of how it can be integrated into university curricula and aligned with other accessible digital preparedness tools. The Effects of Classroom Management Efficacy on Interest Development in Guided Role-Playing Simulations for Sustainable Pre-Service Teacher Training

Classroom management is an essential yet frequently under-practiced competency in undergraduate teacher education, with important implications for sustainable teacher preparation. This study investigated whether pre-service teachers who feel more capable of managing classrooms also engage more deeply with simulation-based training. Fifty-seven Korean pre-service teachers (15 men, 42 women), all undergraduate students enrolled in a secondary teacher education program at a college of education, completed a five-item classroom-management-efficacy scale, then experienced a 15 min branching simulation that required choosing recognition, punishment, or aggression strategies in response to a disrespectful virtual student. Interest was assessed immediately afterwards with a 24-item instrument covering the four phases of the interest-development model (triggered situational, maintained situational, emerging individual, and well-developed individual). A post-test comparative design and MANOVA revealed that efficacy level had a significant multivariate effect on overall interest (Wilks Λ = 0.78, p = 0.029, partial η2 = 0.12). Scheffe contrasts showed that high-efficacy participants outscored their low-efficacy peers on maintained situational and emerging individual interest, p < 0.05, and surpassed the middle-efficacy group in three of the four phases. Repeated measures ANOVA confirmed a general decline from situational to individual interest across all groups (F (3, 52) = 9.23, p < 0.01), underscoring the difficulty of converting short-term curiosity into lasting commitment. These findings position classroom-management efficacy as a key moderator of engagement and support the use of adaptive simulations as sustainable tools for teacher education. By tailoring challenge levels and feedback to participants’ efficacy, guided simulations can foster deeper engagement and promote individualized growth—helping build resilient and well-prepared educators. The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated an urgent shift to emergency remote learning, significantly affecting the education of bilingual students. This study examines the use of technology-enhanced drama-based methods, specifically digital Readers Theater, as an emergency measure to enhance reading literacy and psychosocial support during the pandemic amid multiple concurrent crises. Using an action research approach, 37 Greek teachers implemented remote literacy activities involving digital drama in their virtual classrooms over a period of four weeks. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews, teachers’ reflective journals, and student participation and were analyzed through Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior. The findings indicate that, despite technological challenges and adaptation difficulties, the creative use of digital drama activities contributed to improvements in students’ reading skills, motivation, and engagement. The intervention also fostered students’ emotional expression and social connection, contributing to their psychosocial support during the disruption. This study highlights the dual role of technology as both an enabler and a barrier, emphasizing the need for better digital infrastructure and comprehensive teacher training for effective emergency response. The results stress the value of technology-supported, arts-based approaches in maintaining student engagement and promoting bilingual literacy in crisis contexts. These findings provide useful guidance for teachers and school leaders on how to support students’ learning and well-being, both during crises and in everyday practice. Full article

Hackathon events have become increasingly popular in recent years as a modern tool for innovation in the education sector as they offer important learning advantages. Within the “INVITE” Erasmus+ project, four distinct hackathons were organized to bring together academic institutions, teachers, and students in the design of innovative international virtual and blended collaborations. In addition, as part of the “INVITE” project, an Open Interactive Digital Ecosystem (digital platform) has been developed to facilitate hackathons organization and was tested within two of the events. This platform can enhance hosting action-training programs providing a shared open resources space for educators to contact peers and design projects. All four hackathons were held during 2024 and their duration and type (onsite, blended, hybrid, and online) varied significantly. However, all hackathon topics were related to sustainability, SDGs, and Green Agenda. In total, more than 220 participants enrolled in the four events, including students, researchers, and professors from different disciplines, age groups, and countries. All participants were provided with qualitative surveys to explore their satisfaction and experiences. The results compare different hackathon setups to reveal valuable insights regarding the optimal design for higher education hackathons. Full article

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting social interaction, communication, and emotional regulation, often requiring specialized educational approaches. Traditional teaching methods may not meet the needs of children with ASD, while visual and interactive formats tend to be more effective. This study examines the use of a virtual reality (VR) visual novel incorporating social stories to support social–emotional learning in children with Level 1 ASD. The intervention used an interactive, choice-based VR environment simulating everyday social situations. Four primary school students participated in a one-week case study, during which they engaged with the VR prototype. Teachers observed the students and provided feedback through questionnaires and interviews. Results showed high engagement with observable social communication behaviors and emotional responses in one participant but no consistent short-term changes across the group. All teachers expressed positive views, noting the tool’s visual clarity, ease of use, and alignment with ASD learners’ needs. Usability challenges were minimal but included pacing delays and difficulties managing impulsive behavior. Although limited by sample size and short duration, the findings indicate that VR visual novels are a promising and acceptable approach for practicing social–emotional skills in inclusive classrooms. Further research is needed to evaluate long-term effects and enhance adaptability. Full article

Since the establishment of the State of Alarm resulting from the current COVID-19 pandemic, lockdown, and quarantine have been imposed in most countries, with serious health, social, economic, and educational consequences. The health emergency caused by COVID-19 led to the closure of schools, forcing students from all over the world to stop attending schools and compromising the quality of care offered to students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In order to examine how teachers supervised students with ASD virtually during the lockdown period, and to determine whether families considered the support provided by teachers to be adequate, a cross-cultural study design was adopted. An ad hoc questionnaire was administered to 415 families in Spain and Mexico in April 2020. We calculated frequencies and carried out descriptive analyses, parametric inferential analyses, and correlations. Families reported that educational monitoring and contact with the family member with ASD during home lockdown was scarce, despite the provision of activities appropriate to their needs. Significant differences were found as a function of country, age of participant, age of family member with ASD, type of ASD, type of schooling, and length of lockdown. This study highlights the need to train teachers in inclusive digital education and to establish effective protocols for communication and follow-up with the families of students with ASD. The development and evolution of digital technologies can contribute to the transformation of the educational sector, allowing the integration of innovative teaching approaches. Typical examples of such approaches include artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), adaptive learning, and online educational environments. This study explores modern digital educational methods, focusing on the advantages, challenges, and future prospects of modern technologies in education. The systematic literature review was based exclusively on the Scopus database. We explored 948 articles published from 1968 to 2025. Furthermore, using the VOSviewer program (version 1.6.20), the results were analyzed, identifying and highlighting various trends and key thematic areas. However, although digital educational methods are able to provide greater interactivity, personalization, and flexibility in learning, they also face significant challenges, some of which are the digital divide, privacy protection, and teacher training. In the future, research should shape best practices that will integrate digital technologies into education. Full article

Coaching is an important form of professional development for the early childhood education and care (ECEC) workforce. However, educators working in remote contexts do not always have access to this type of support. This paper explores the effectiveness of a virtual (online and telephone) coaching program focusing on the implementation of evidence-informed Conversational Reading strategies in supported playgroups for Aboriginal families in the Northern Territory of Australia. Fourteen Family Educators and Family Liaison Officers across ten Families as First Teachers playgroups in the Northern Territory participated in the coaching program over twelve months. Coaching records, planning documents, participant feedback, and video recordings of participants’ practice were analysed to explore the impact and acceptability of the coaching program. The findings indicate that participation in the cycle of virtual coaching, planning, and reflection supported participants in implementing evidence-informed teaching strategies, offering language-rich experiences to children frequently and with increased fidelity, and engaging with families about their use of these strategies in the home. The model of coaching developed shows promise for wider implementation in ECEC contexts, particularly in remote communities where access to high-quality professional learning and development can be limited. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted U.S. K-12 education systems, forcing teachers to adopt emergency remote teaching with minimal preparation. This study investigates the challenges and adaptive strategies of 16 U.S. K-12 educators during the pandemic. Qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with 16 educators was conducted to identify key themes. Findings reveal that innovative engagement strategies—including interactive activities, long-term projects, and inclusive virtual environments—were pivotal for sustaining participation. Challenges such as disparities in students’ home environments, technical limitations, and motivational declines underscored the need for parental collaboration, emotional support frameworks, and teacher-specific professional development. These results highlight actionable pathways to strengthen resilience and equity in online education systems during crises. Full article

Recently, the innovative use of virtual reality (VR) in teacher training has begun to support the professional development of PSTs, although this approach is studied less extensively compared to fields like medicine and aviation. This paper draws upon the cultural–historical concept of social situation of development (SSD) to explore how VR experiences enhance PSTs’ preparation before they enter their first professional experiences. This study involved 66 diverse post-graduate PSTs within an Australian post-graduate Initial Teacher Education programme in early childhood (EC) education. The VR experiences allowed them to engage with avatar children aged 3–5 within a realistic environment, fostering valuable insights regarding their practice in future professional experiences. By studying the PSTs’ reflections, this study identified the dramatic events that arose from PSTs’ interactions in VR. These moments highlighted instances of SSD, where PSTs advanced both mentally and practically in their placement preparation. Within SSD, PSTs developed a deeper understanding of child development, classroom dynamics, and the effectiveness of various teaching strategies. They also practised strategies, including teaching techniques, classroom management, behavioural guidance, and adapting to the diverse needs of avatar children. The mental and practical development significantly contributed to PSTs’ preparation for professional experiences. The subjective nature of their reflections provided valuable insights into their development from their own perspectives. However, it is important to note that this paper is based on data collected from a single post-graduate course. Future research will aim to gather perspectives from PSTs at multiple institutions, as well as from placement mentors, regarding PSTs’ understanding of working in early childhood contexts in Australia. Enhancing Molecular Biology Content Knowledge and Teaching Self-Efficacy in Pre-Service Teachers Through Virtual and Hands-On Labs and Reflective Teaching

Teachers in lower secondary education often lack content knowledge and self-efficacy to teach molecular biology. The focus of this study was to develop and evaluate an innovative educational approach to prepare pre-service teachers for teaching molecular biology. Therefore, an educational double-decker, with two master courses in a teaching-learning laboratory, has been developed. First, teacher students acquire virtual and authentic lab experiences in a blended-learning course. Later they gain reflective teaching experience by instructing peers or secondary school students. Using a mixed-methods approach in a one-shot-case study design, we examined the effects of the two courses on content knowledge of molecular biology and self-efficacy to teach it, the relationship between knowledge and self-efficacy, and the influence of teaching secondary students compared to peer teaching on self-efficacy. Questionnaires (N = 92 and N = 20) measured knowledge and self-efficacy before and after both courses; differences were analyzed statistically. In addition, guided interviews were conducted with teacher students after the educational double-decker (N = 14) and analyzed qualitatively using content analysis. The results demonstrate that blended-learning formats are efficacious in developing molecular biology knowledge. Content knowledge is positively correlated with teaching self-efficacy, but this effect diminishes after having a reflective teaching experience. These experiences are pivotal factors in self-efficacy development. Teaching real secondary school students is valuable in fostering self-efficacy, as such authentic experiences can be readily applied in everyday school life. Full article
