Metro carriages, as enclosed transport microenvironments, have been understudied regarding pollution characteristics and health risks from ACs, especially during high-temperature summers that amplify exposure. This study applied NTS techniques for the first time across three major Chengdu metro lines, systematically identifying sixteen ACs, including hazardous species such as acetophenone, benzonitrile, and benzoic acid that are often overlooked in conventional BTEX-focused monitoring. The TAC concentration reached 41.40 ± 5.20 µg/m3, with half of the compounds exhibiting significant increases during peak commuting periods. Source apportionment using diagnostic ratios and PMF identified five major contributors: carriage material emissions (36.62%), human sources (22.50%), traffic exhaust infiltration (16.67%), organic solvents (16.55%), and industrial emissions (7.66%). Although both non-cancer (HI) and cancer (TCR) risks for all population groups were below international thresholds, summer tourists experienced higher exposure than daily commuters. Notably, child tourists showed the greatest vulnerability, with a TCR of 5.83 × 10−7, far exceeding that of commuting children (1.88 × 10−7). Benzene was the dominant contributor, accounting for over 50% of HI and 70% of TCR. This study presents the first integrated NTS and quantitative risk assessment to characterise ACs in summer metro environments, revealing a broader range of hazardous compounds beyond BTEX. It quantifies population-specific risks, highlights children’s heightened vulnerability. The findings fill critical gaps in ACs exposure and provide a scientific basis for improved air quality management and pollution mitigation strategies in urban rail transit systems. Full article

The development of big data analytics in healthcare has created a demand for privacy-conscious and scalable machine learning algorithms that can allow the use of patient information across different healthcare organizations. In this study, the difficulties that come with traditional federated learning frameworks in healthcare sectors, such as scalability, computational effectiveness, and preserving patient privacy for numerous healthcare systems, are discussed. In this work, a new conceptual model known as Hierarchical Federated Learning (HFL) for large, integrated healthcare organizations that include several institutions is proposed. The first level of aggregation forms regional centers where local updates are first collected and then sent to the second level of aggregation to form the global update, thus reducing the message-passing traffic and improving the scalability of the HFL architecture. Furthermore, the HFL framework leveraged more robust privacy characteristics such as Local Differential Privacy (LDP), Gaussian Differential Privacy (GDP), Secure Multi-Party Computation (SMPC) and Homomorphic Encryption (HE). In addition, a Novel Aggregated Gradient Perturbation Mechanism is presented to alleviate noise in model updates and maintain privacy and utility. The performance of the proposed HFL framework is evaluated on real-life healthcare datasets and an artificial dataset created using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), showing that the proposed HFL framework is better than other methods. Our approach provided an accuracy of around 97% and 30% less privacy leakage compared to the existing models of FLBM-IoT and PPFLB. The proposed HFL approach can help to find the optimal balance between privacy and model performance, which is crucial for healthcare applications and scalable and secure solutions. Full article

Departure punctuality (KPI01) and ATFM slot adherence (KPI03) have been emphasized by the International Civil Aviation Organization as key performance indicators (KPIs) in the Global Air Navigation Plan. To address the inherent conflict between these two objectives in departure scheduling, a multi-objective optimization model is proposed that aims to simultaneously enhance departure punctuality, ATFM slot adherence, and taxiing efficiency. A simulated annealing algorithm based on a resource transmission mechanism was developed to solve the model effectively. Based on full-scale operational data from Nanjing Lukou International Airport in June 2023, the empirical results confirm the model’s effectiveness in two primary dimensions: (1) Significant improvement in taxiing efficiency: The average unimpeded taxi-out time was reduced by 6.4% (from 17.2 to 16.1 min). The number of flights with taxi-out times exceeding 30 min decreased by 58%. For representative taxi routes (e.g., stand 118 to runway 6), the excess taxi-out time was reduced by 82.3% (from 5.61 to 1.10 min). (2) Enhanced operational punctuality: Departure punctuality improved by 10.7% (from 67.9% to 78.7%), while ATFM slot adherence increased by 31.2% (from 64.6% to 95.8%). This study presents an innovative departure scheduling approach and offers a practical framework for improving collaborative operational efficiency among airports, air traffic management units, and airlines. Rapid industrialization and urbanization have progressed in Korea, yet public attention to hazardous pollutants emitted from industrial complexes remains limited. With the increasing coexistence of industrial and residential areas, there is a growing need for real-time monitoring and management plans that account for the rapid dispersion of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). In this study, we conducted spatiotemporal data collection and analysis for the first time in Korea using real-time measurements obtained through mobile extractive differential optical absorption spectroscopy (Me-DOAS) mounted on a solar occultation flux (SOF) vehicle. The measurements were conducted in the Saha Sinpyeong–Janglim Industrial Complex in Busan, which comprises the Sasang Industrial Complex and the Sinpyeong–Janglim Industrial Complex. BTEX compounds were selected as target volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and real-time measurements of both BTEX and fine particulate matter (PM) were conducted simultaneously. Correlation analysis revealed a strong relationship between PM10 and PM2.5 (r = 0.848–0.894), indicating shared sources. In Sasang, BTEX levels were associated with traffic and localized facilities, while in Saha Sinpyeong–Janglim, the concentrations were more influenced by industrial zoning and wind patterns. Notably, inter-compound correlations such as benzene–m-xylene and p-xylene–toluene suggested possible co-emission sources. This study proposes a GIS-based, three-dimensional air quality management approach that integrates variables such as traffic volume, wind direction, and speed through real-time measurements. The findings are expected to inform effective pollution control strategies and future environmental management plans for industrial complexes. Full article

Large-scale events, such as festivals and public gatherings, pose serious problems in terms of traffic congestion, slow transaction processing, and security risks to transportation planning. This study proposes a blockchain-based solution for enhancing the efficiency and security of intelligent transport systems (ITS) by utilizing state channels and rollups. Throughput is optimized, enabling transaction speeds of 800 to 3500 transactions per second (TPS) and delays of 5 to 1.5 s. Prevent data tampering, strengthen security, and enhance data integrity from 89% to 99.999%, as well as encryption efficacy from 90% to 98%. Furthermore, our system reduces congestion, optimizes vehicle movement, and shares real-time, secure data with stakeholders. Practical applications include fast and safe road toll payments, faster public transit ticketing, improved emergency response coordination, and enhanced urban mobility. The decentralized blockchain helps maintain trust among users, transportation authorities, and event organizers. Our approach extends beyond large-scale events and proposes a path toward ubiquitous, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven decision-making in a broader urban transit network, informing future operations in dynamic traffic optimization. This study demonstrates the potential of blockchain to create more intelligent, more secure, and scalable transportation systems, which will help reduce urban mobility inefficiencies and contribute to the development of resilient smart cities. This study investigates the heavy metal contamination in urban and peri-urban soils of Thessaloniki, Greece, over a two-year period (2023–2024). A total of 208 composite soil samples were systematically collected from 52 sites representing diverse land uses, including high-traffic roadsides, industrial zones, residential neighborhoods, parks, and mixed-use areas, with sampling conducted both after the wet (winter) and dry (summer) seasons. Soil physicochemical properties (pH, electrical conductivity, texture, organic matter, and calcium carbonate content) were analyzed alongside the concentrations of heavy metals such as Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. A pollution assessment employed the Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Contamination Factor (Cf), Pollution Load Index (PLI), and Potential Ecological Risk Index (RI), revealing variable contamination levels across the city, with certain hotspots exhibiting a considerable to very high ecological risk. Multivariate statistical analyses (PCA and HCA) identified distinct anthropogenic and geogenic sources of heavy metals. Health risk assessments, based on USEPA models, evaluated non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks for both adults and children via ingestion and dermal contact pathways. The results indicate that while most sites present low to moderate health risks, specific locations, particularly near major transport and industrial areas, pose elevated risks, especially for children. The findings underscore the need for targeted monitoring and remediation strategies to mitigate the ecological and human health risks associated with urban soil pollution in Thessaloniki. Background: Renal trauma accounts for approximately 3–5% of all trauma cases, predominantly affecting young males. The most common etiology is blunt trauma, particularly due to road traffic accidents, and it frequently occurs as part of polytrauma involving multiple organ systems. Management strategies are primarily dictated by hemodynamic stability, overall clinical condition, comorbidities, and injury severity graded according to the AAST classification. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of non-operative management (NOM) in high-grade renal trauma (AAST grades III–V), beyond its established role in low-grade injuries (grades I–II). Secondary endpoints included the identification of independent prognostic factors for NOM failure and in-hospital mortality. Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study including patients diagnosed with blunt renal trauma who presented to the Emergency Department of Policlinico Umberto I in Rome between 1 January 2013 and 30 April 2024. Collected data comprised demographics, trauma mechanism, vital signs, hemodynamic status (shock index), laboratory tests, blood gas analysis, hematuria, number of transfused RBC units in the first 24 h, AAST renal injury grade, ISS, associated injuries, treatment approach, hospital length of stay, and mortality. Statistical analyses, including multivariable logistic regression, were performed using SPSS v28.0. Results: A total of 244 patients were included. Low-grade injuries (AAST I–II) accounted for 43% (n = 105), while high-grade injuries (AAST III–V) represented 57% (n = 139). All patients with low-grade injuries were managed non-operatively. Among high-grade injuries, 124 patients (89%) were treated with NOM, including observation, angiography ± angioembolization, stenting, or nephrostomy. Only 15 patients (11%) required nephrectomy, primarily due to persistent hemodynamic instability. The overall mortality rate was 13.5% (33 patients) and was more closely associated with the overall injury burden than with renal injury severity. Multivariable analysis identified shock index and active bleeding on CT as independent predictors of NOM failure, whereas ISS and age were significant predictors of in-hospital mortality. Notably, AAST grade did not independently predict either outcome. Conclusions: In line with the current international literature, our study confirms that NOM is the treatment of choice not only for low-grade renal injuries but also for carefully selected hemodynamically stable patients with high-grade trauma. Our findings highlight the critical role of physiological parameters and overall ISS in guiding management decisions and underscore the need for individualized assessment to minimize unnecessary nephrectomies and optimize patient outcomes. A particularly important activity carried out by railway infrastructure managers to maintain railway devices in full working order is the diagnostic process. It increases the level of railway safety. The diagnostic process involves collecting information about the equipment through inspections, tests, functional trials, parameter measurements, and analysis of the working environment, followed by comparing the obtained information with the required parameters or permissible conditions. This activity also enables the formulation of a technical diagnosis regarding the current ability of the devices to perform its intended functions, taking into account the impact of its technical condition on railway traffic safety. This is especially important in the case of railway traffic control devices, as these devices are largely responsible for ensuring railway traffic safety. The collection of data on the condition of railway traffic control devices in the form of Big Data sets and diagnostic inference is an effective factor in making operational decisions for such devices. It enables the acquisition of complete information about the actual course of the exploitation process and allows for obtaining reliable information necessary to manage this process, particularly in the areas of diagnostics forecasting of devices conditions, renewal, and organization of maintenance and repair facilities. To support this, a service data acquisition and analysis system for railway traffic control devices (SADEK) was developed. This system can serve as a software platform for maintenance needs in the railway sector. Full article

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), indoor air quality (IAQ) is becoming a serious global concern due to its significant impact on human health. However, not all relevant health parameters are currently regulated. For example, particle number concentration (PNC) and its associated carbonaceous species, such as black carbon (BC), which are classified as carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), are not currently regulated. Compared with IAQ studies in other types of buildings, studies focusing on IAQ in hospitals or other healthcare facilities are scarce. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the impact of these outdoor pollutants, among others, on the indoor environment of a hospital under different atmospheric conditions. To identify the seasonal influence, two different periods of two consecutive seasons (summer 2020 and winter 2021) were selected for the measurements. Regulated pollutants (NO, NO2, O3, PM10, and PM2.5) and nonregulated pollutants (PM1, PNC, and equivalent BC (eBC)) in outdoor air were simultaneously measured indoor and outdoor. This study also investigated the impact of indoor activities on indoor air quality. In the absence of indoor activities, outdoor sources significantly contribute to indoor traffic-related pollutants. Indoor and outdoor (I-O) measurements showed similar behavior, but indoor concentrations were lower, with peak levels delayed by up to two hours. Seasonal variations in indoor/outdoor (I/O) ratios were lower for particles than for associated gaseous pollutants. Particle infiltration depended on particle size, with it being higher the smaller the particle size. Indoor activities also significantly affected indoor pollutants. PMx (especially PM10 and PM2.5) concentrations were mainly modulated by walking-induced particle resuspension. Vertical eBC profiles indicated a relatively well-mixed environment. Ventilation through open windows rapidly altered indoor air quality. Outdoor-dominant pollutants (PNC, eBC, and NOX) had I/O ratios ≥ 1. Staying in the room with an open window had a synergistic effect, increasing the I/O ratios for all pollutants. Higher I/O ratios were associated with turbulent outdoor conditions in both unoccupied and occupied conditions. Statistically significant differences were observed between stable (TKE ≤ 1 m2 s−2) and unstable (TKE > 1 m2 s−2) conditions, except for NO2 in summer. This finding was particularly significant when the wind direction was westerly or easterly during unstable conditions. The results of this study highlight the importance of understanding the behavior of indoor particulate matter and related pollutants. These pollutants are highly variable, and knowledge about them is crucial for determining their health effects, particularly in public buildings such as hospitals, where information on IAQ is often limited. More measurement data is particularly important for further research into I-O transport mechanisms, which are essential for developing preventive measures and improving IAQ. Full article

The occurrence of haze pollution significantly deteriorates air quality and threatens human health, yet persistent knowledge gaps in real-time source apportionment of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) hinder sustained improvements in atmospheric pollution conditions. Thus, this study employed single-particle aerosol mass spectrometry (SPAMS) to investigate PM2.5 sources and dynamics during winter haze episodes in Yinchuan, Northwest China. Results showed that the average PM2.5 concentration was 57 μg·m−3, peaking at 218 μg·m−3. PM2.5 was dominated by organic carbon (OC, 17.3%), mixed carbonaceous particles (ECOC, 17.0%), and elemental carbon (EC, 14.3%). The primary sources were coal combustion (26.4%), fugitive dust (25.8%), and vehicle emissions (19.1%). Residential coal burning dominated coal emissions (80.9%), highlighting inefficient decentralized heating. Source contributions showed distinct diurnal patterns: coal combustion peaked nocturnally (29.3% at 09:00) due to heating and inversions, fugitive dust rose at night (28.6% at 19:00) from construction and low winds, and vehicle emissions aligned with traffic (17.5% at 07:00). Haze episodes were driven by synergistic increases in local coal (+4.0%), dust (+2.7%), and vehicle (+2.1%) emissions, compounded by regional transport (10.1–36.7%) of aged particles from northwestern zones. Fugitive dust correlated with sulfur dioxide (SO2) and ozone (O3) (p < 0.01), suggesting roles as carriers and reactive interfaces. Findings confirm local emission dominance with spatiotemporal heterogeneity and regional transport influence. SPAMS effectively resolved short-term pollution dynamics, providing critical insights for targeted air quality management in arid regions. Full article

They manifest primarily as abdominal pain, and the diagnosis is made based on imaging studies—ultrasound, CT, and MRI. Methods: This work aimed to analyze traumatic splenic torsions in terms of their clinical course, symptoms, timing, involvement of imaging techniques in the diagnosis, histopathological examination, and overall outcome. We searched databases using the desk research method under the keywords “splenic torsion”, “torsion”, and “spleen”, as well as in combination with “traumatic”, finding a total of eight cases, which we included in our analysis. Results: The eight cases were analyzed, comprising four females and four males, with an average age of 16.25 years (range 5–29 years). Traffic accidents were the most frequent cause of injury (five cases), while the circumstances were unclear in the remaining three. Immediate abdominal symptoms appeared in six patients. Splenic torsion was preoperatively diagnosed in five out of seven confirmed cases. A total of seven patients underwent laparotomy with splenectomy. In one case, laparoscopy converted to laparotomy with splenopexy preserved the spleen. Histopathology, performed in only two cases, confirmed splenic infarction in one patient; infarction status could not be determined in the remaining five due to missing data. Conclusions: Post-traumatic splenic torsions are a group of atypical injuries as the primary and immediate consequence of the trauma suffered is not anatomical–structural damage to the organ, such as a rupture. Mostly affecting young people, the cases described in the professional literature involve the main spleen, which was considered to be “wandering”, suggesting that this is a key predisposing factor for splenic torsion following blunt trauma and requiring diagnostic imaging for diagnosis. Biomass burning processes affect many semi-rural areas in the Mediterranean, but there is a lack of long-term datasets focusing on their classification, obtained by monitoring carbonaceous particle concentrations and optical properties variations. To address this issue, a campaign to measure equivalent black carbon (eBC) and particle number size distributions (0.3–10 μm) was carried out from August 2019 to November 2020 at a coastal semi-rural site in the Basilicata region of Southern Italy. Long-term datasets were useful for aerosol characterization, helping to clearly identify traffic as a constant eBC source. For a shorter period, PM2.5 mass concentrations were also measured, allowing the estimation of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC), and chemical and SEM (scanning electron microscope) analysis of aerosols collected on filters. This multi-instrumental approach enabled the discrimination among different biomass burning (BB) processes, and the analysis of three case studies related to domestic heating, regional smoke plume transport, and a local smoldering process. The AAE (Ångström absorption exponent) daily pattern was characterized as having a peak late in the morning and mean hourly values that were always higher than 1.3. Full article

The study of traffic parameters in cities is the basis for making adequate decisions related to the organization and regulation of traffic. This publication presents a study of one of the main parameters of transport flows, namely, its intensity. The study covers one of the busiest streets in the city of Sofia, which is part of the radial connection in the radial circular street network of the city, for the evening peak period of the day. Data analysis presents the influence of the intensity of transport flows at the intersections, which are formed by the intersection with other streets, on the load of the studied street. The share of the load of each transport flow at the individual intersections on the total load of the studied section was recorded for the subsequent assessment of the existing traffic management. The results have been provided to the relevant directorates in the structure of Sofia Municipality for information and use. Full article

Evaluation of Turkey’s Road-Based Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Future Projections

As road traffic in Turkey is a significant source of emissions due to the increasing number of vehicles on the road, the goal of this study is to calculate greenhouse gas emissions from Turkey’s roads between 2010 and 2020, create an inventory, and estimate possible emissions until 2050. In the study, both greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) and co-emitting air pollutants that indirectly contribute to climate change (ammonia—NH3, nitrogen oxide—NOX, sulfur dioxide—SO2, carbon monoxide—CO, non-methane volatile organic compounds—NMVOC, and particulate matter—PM) were investigated. The study revealed that the total number of vehicles using state roads in Turkey increased by 60% between 2010 and 2020. As a result, emissions of CO2, N2O, NH3, NOX, SO2, CO, NMVOC, and PM increased by 29.6%, 24.2%, 0.5%, 19.9%, 9.9%, 18.2%, 21.5%, and 39.7%, respectively. When emissions were analyzed on a provincial basis, particular attention was drawn to provinces with high levels of urbanization. Based on forecast studies, the total number of vehicles registered for traffic will increase by 105% by 2050. Due to this increase, CO2, N2O, NH3, NOX, SO2, CO, NMVOC, and PM emissions are estimated to increase by 149.17%, 151.78%, 154.39%, 138.95%, 150.97%, 153.09%, 152.09%, and 151.47%, respectively. Assessment of Health Risks Associated with PM10 and PM2.5 Air Pollution in the City of Zvolen and Comparison with Selected Cities in the Slovak Republic

Air pollution is one of the most serious environmental threats, with particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5 representing its most harmful components, significantly affecting public health. These particles are primarily generated by transport, industry, residential heating, and agriculture, and are associated with increased incidence of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, asthma attacks, and heart attacks, as well as chronic illnesses and premature mortality. The most vulnerable groups include children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. This study focuses on the analysis of health risks associated with PM10 and PM2.5 air pollution in the city of Zvolen, which serves as a representative case due to its urban structure, traffic load, and industrial activity. The aim is to assess the current state of air quality, identify the main sources of pollution, and evaluate the health impacts of particulate matter on the local population. The results will be compared with selected Slovak cities—Banská Bystrica and Ružomberok—to understand regional differences in exposure and its health consequences. The results revealed consistently elevated concentrations of particulate matter (PM) across all analyzed cities, frequently exceeding the guideline values recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), although remaining below the thresholds set by current national legislation. The lowest average concentrations were recorded in the city of Zvolen (PM10: 20 μg/m3; PM2.5: 15 μg/m3). These lower values may be attributed to the location of the reference monitoring station operated by the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ), situated on J. Alexy Street in the southern part of the city—south of Zvolen’s primary industrial emitter, Kronospan. Due to predominantly southerly wind patterns, PM particles are transported northward, potentially leading to higher pollution loads in the northern areas of the city, which are currently not being monitored. We analyzed trends in PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations and their relationship with hospitalization data for respiratory diseases. The results indicate a clear correlation between the concentration of suspended particulate matter and the number of hospital admissions due to respiratory illnesses. Our findings thus confirm the significant adverse effects of particulate air pollution on population health and highlight the urgent need for systematic monitoring and effective measures to reduce emissions, particularly in urban areas.
