In this study, the impact of moderate and high CO2 and O2 levels was compared to low and moderate gas combinations during prolonged storage on the quality of Regina sweet cherries harvested in different maturity stages, particularly in terms of decreasing internal browning. Fruits were harvested in two different maturity stages (Light and Dark Mahogany skin color) and stored in CA of 15% CO2 + 10% O2; 10% CO2 + 10% O2; 10% CO2 + 5% O2; 5% CO2 + 5% O2 and MA of 4 to 5% CO2 + 16 to 17% O2 for 30 and 40 days at 0 °C and 90% RH, followed by a marketing period. After the storage, both maturity stages significantly reduced internal browning, decay, and visual quality losses in CA with 10–15% CO2 and 10% O2. In addition, it preserved luminosity, total soluble solids (TSSs), titratable acidity (TA), and bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins and phenols. This treatment also maintained the visual appearance of the sweet cherries, favoring their market acceptance. At the same time, the light red fruits showed a better general quality compared to darker color after the storage. In conclusion, a controlled atmosphere with optimized CO2 and O2 concentrations, together with harvesting with a Light Mahogany external color, represents an effective strategy to extend the shelf life of Regina sweet cherries up to 40 days plus the marketing period, maintaining their physical and sensory quality for export markets. In this study, we sought to improve the productivity of Far Eastern catfish (Silurus asotus) and tropical eel (Anguilla bicolor), which are high-value fish species in the Republic of Korea, as well as that of associated crops by applying biofloc technology (BFT)-based aquaponics systems. The following three systems were used: the flow-through system (FTS), BFT, and BFT aquaponics system (BAPs). Caipira lettuce (Lactuca sativa) was utilized and hydroponics (HP) was implemented to compare crop productivity. After 42 days of treatment, the BAPs and BFT systems improved fish productivity, with weight gain rates of 134.47 ± 1.80% in BAPs-cat, 130.38 ± 0.95% in BFT, and 114.21 ± 6.62% in FTS for S. asotus, and 70.61 ± 3.26% in BAPs-eel, 62.37 ± 7.04% in BFT, and 47.83 ± 1.09% in FTS for A. bicolor. During the experiment, the total ammonia nitrogen and NO2-N concentrations were stable in all plots. In the case of NO3-N, BFT showed an increasing tendency while both BAPs showed a decrease compared with that of the BFT. BAPs-cat (total weight: 224.1 ± 6.37 g) and HP (220.3 ± 7.17 g) resulted in similar growth. However, in BAPs-eel was 187.7 ± 3.46 g due to root degradation. Water content analysis showed that BAPs-cat and BAPs-eel contained sufficient K, Ca, P, and S, which are important for crop growth. Overall, the effect of BAPs on fish growth was higher than that of FTS. This study reveals that integrating BFT with aquaponics improves productivity for high-value fish and associated crops while maintaining stable water quality. This method offers sustainable, efficient production, reduces environmental impact, and provides insights for future research in sustainable aquaculture practices. Full article

Minimally Invasive Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass as Palliative Revascularization in High-Risk Patients

Background: In high-risk and frail patients with multivessel coronary artery disease (MV CAD), guidelines indicated complete revascularization with or without the use of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) bears a high morbidity and mortality risk. In cases where catheter interventions were deemed unsuitable and conventional coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) posed an unacceptable perioperative risk, patients were scheduled for minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) grafting or minimally invasive multivessel coronary artery bypass grafting (MICS-CABG). We called this approach “palliative revascularization.” This study assesses the safety and impact of palliative revascularization on clinical outcomes and overall survival. Methods: A consecutive series of 57 patients undergoing MIDCAB or MICS-CABG as a palliative surgery between 2008 and 2018 was included. The decision for palliative surgery was met in heart team after carefully assessing each case. The patients underwent single or double-vessel revascularization using the left internal thoracic artery and rarely radial artery/saphenous vein segments, both endoscopically harvested. Inpatient data could be completed for all 57 patients. The mean follow-up interval was 4.2 ± 3.7 years, with a follow-up rate of 91.2%. Results: Mean patient age was 79.7 ± 7.4 years. Overall, 46 patients (80.7%) were male, 26 (45.6%) had a history of atrial fibrillation and 25 (43.9%) of chronic kidney disease. In total, 13 patients exhibited a moderate EuroSCORE II, while 27 were classified as high risk, with a EuroSCORE II exceeding 5%. Additionally, 40 patients (70.2%) presented with three-vessel disease, 17 (29.8%) suffered an acute myocardial infarction within three weeks prior to surgery and 50.9% presented an impaired ejection fraction. There were 48 MIDCAB and nine MICS CABG with no conversions either to sternotomy or to CPB. Eight cases were planned as hybrid procedures and only 15 patients (26.3%) were completely revascularized. During the first 30 days, four patients (7%) died. A myocardial infarction occurred in only one case, no patient necessitated immediate reoperation. The one-, three- and five-year survival rates were 83%, 67% and 61%, respectively. Conclusions: MIDCAB and MICS CABG can be successfully conducted as less invasive palliative surgery in high-risk multimorbid patients with MV CAD. The early and mid-term results were better than predicted. A higher rate of hybrid procedures could improve long-term outcome in selected cases. Full article

This study evaluated biomass accumulation and phenolic compound production in seven Hypericum species (H. androsaemum, H. calycinum, H. hirsutum, H. kalmianum, H. olympicum, H. perforatum, and H. triquetrifolium) cultivated in vitro under varying growth regulator treatments and culture periods. Shoots were grown on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with benzyladenine (BA) or meta-topoline (mT) and analyzed after 40 and 60 days. MS medium supplemented with 0.2 mg/L BA was the most effective condition for promoting biomass across all species, with shoot fresh weight increasing significantly at 60 days, particularly in H. olympicum, H. perforatum, and H. triquetrifolium. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detection and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS) identified 13 phenolic compounds, including flavonols, hydroxycinnamic acids, anthocyanins, phloroglucinols, and naphthodianthrones. Phenolic profiles were species-specific and influenced by culture period. H. kalmianum accumulated the highest total phenolic content (37.6 mg/g DW), while H. olympicum was the top producer of hypericin and pseudohypericin. These results highlight the crucial role of culture conditions in regulating both biomass and phytochemical production and provide a promising approach for producing bioactive metabolites in Hypericum species through in vitro systems. Background: Trichosporon spp. are opportunistic fungi, capable of causing infection, especially in critically ill individuals who often use broad-spectrum antibiotics, invasive devices, and have comorbidities. Objectives The aim of this study was to analyze individuals’ clinical characteristics, evaluate tolerance to biocides, as well as biofilm formation and efflux pump activity in isolates of Trichosporon asahii. Methods: Clinical isolates of T. asahii collected between 2020 and 2023 from both hospitalized and non-hospitalized individuals, of both sexes, regardless of age, were tested for tolerance to sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, benzalkonium chloride, and ethyl alcohol. Efflux pump activity was also assessed using ethidium bromide, and biofilm formation was measured with the Safranin test. Clinical parameters such as outcomes, source, and length of hospitalization were analyzed through electronic medical records. Results: A total of 37 clinical isolates of T. asahii were identified. Thirty-three (83.8%) isolates were from hospitalized individuals, with 81.82% collected in ICUs, an average hospital stay of 35 days, and a mortality rate of 51.6%. The tested strains displayed the largest mean inhibition zone for 2% sodium hypochlorite, indicating lower tolerance. A high level of efflux pump expression was detected among clinical isolates. Biofilm formation was detected in 25/67.5% of the isolates. Conclusions: These findings highlight the clinical relevance of T. asahii, particularly in critically ill individuals, and underscore the pathogen’s ability to tolerate biocides, express efflux pumps, and form biofilms, all of which may contribute to its persistence and pathogenicity in hospital environments. Enhanced surveillance and effective microbial control measures are essential to mitigate the risks associated with T. asahii infections. Full article

Ready-to-eat meat products face quality challenges during storage and reheating. This study aimed to (i) characterize the physicochemical/microbiological changes in stewed mutton during storage (4 °C/−18 °C, 0–28 days) and (ii) evaluate reheating methods (boiling vs. microwaving) on day-7 samples. The nutritional analysis confirmed moisture reduction (57.32 vs. 72.12 g/100 g)-concentrated protein/fat levels. Storage at −18 °C suppressed microbial growth (the total plate count (TPC), 3.73 vs. 4.80 log CFU/g at 28 days; p < 0.05) and lipid oxidation (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS): 0.14 vs. 0.19 mg/kg) more effectively than storage at 4 °C. The total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) kinetics projected a shelf life ≥90 days (4 °C) and ≥120 days (−18 °C). Microwave reheating after frozen storage (−18 °C) maximized the yield (86.21% vs. 75.90% boiling; p < 0.05) and preserved volatile profiles closest to those in the fresh samples (gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS)/electronic nose). The combination of freezing storage and subsequent microwave reheating has been demonstrated to be an effective method for preserving the quality of a precooked lamb dish, thereby ensuring its nutritional value. Background: Patients in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) often develop non-thyroidal illness syndrome. Potentially, thyroid hormones may be removed during continuous veno-venous hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF), as their molecular size is smaller than the filter pores’ cutoff. The study’s main aim was to assess whether the serum concentration of thyroid hormones changes over time during CVVHDF. Methods: This was a prospective observational trial that included 30 patients treated in an ICU. All patients developed acute kidney injury (AKI) and had clinical indications for implementation of CVVHDF. Blood samples were collected before initiation of CVVHDF and at 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 12 days after. The last sample was collected three days after CVVHDF withdrawal. Thyroid function was evaluated by determining the serum concentration of TSH, thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), free triiodothyronine (fT3), free thyroxine (fT4), total triiodothyronine (tT3), total thyroxine (tT4) and reverse triiodothyronine (rT3). We additionally calculated the total activity of peripheral deiodinases (GD) using a mathematical model. Results: TRH and TSH levels remained mostly within normal ranges. fT4 and tT4 were in normal range or slightly below. In contrast, fT3 and tT3 were undetectably low in most patients throughout. Reverse T3 levels remained within normal limits. There were no statistically significant changes in any thyroid hormone levels over the CVVHDF treatment period. The calculated peripheral GD activity was lower than normal, but importantly, it did not change significantly over time. Conclusions: Thyroid hormones are not lost due to hemodiafiltration. Decreased deiodinases activity is responsible for alterations in serum concentrations of thyroid hormones in patients during CVVHDF. Full article

The aim was to investigate the genetic effects of a SNP located in the precursor region of gga-miR-3528. (1) Single-nucleotide polymorphisms within precursor regions of microRNAs play crucial biological roles. (2) Utilizing a Gushi–Anka F2 resource population (n = 860), we screened and validated miRNA SNPs. A SNP mutation in the miR-3528 precursor region was identified. Specific primers were designed to amplify the polymorphic fragment. Genotyping was performed for this individual SNP across the population, using the MassArray system. Association analyses were conducted between this SNP and chicken growth and body measurement traits, carcass traits, meat quality traits, and serum enzyme activities. (3) The rs14098602 (+12 bp A > G) was identified within the precursor region of gga-miR-3528. Significant associations (p < 0.05) were observed between this SNP and chicken growth traits (body weight at the age of 0 day, body weight at the age of 2 weeks, and body weight at the age of 4 weeks), carcass traits (evisceration weight), meat quality traits (subcutaneous fat rate and pectoral muscle density), and serum enzyme activities (total protein, albumin, globulin, cholinesterase, and lactate dehydrogenase). (4) These findings suggest that the polymorphism at rs14098602 may influence chicken growth, meat quality, and serum biochemical indices, through specific mechanisms. The gga-miR-3528 gene likely plays an important role in chicken development. Therefore, this SNP can serve as a molecular marker for genetic breeding and auxiliary selection of growth-related traits, facilitating the rapid establishment of elite chicken populations with superior genetic resources. The growing demand for food and the environmental impact of conventional agriculture have prompted the search for sustainable alternatives. Phycocyanin (PC) and total phenolic compounds (TPC) extracted from Spirulina platensis have shown potential for the biological control of phytopathogens. The extraction method directly influences the yield and stability of these compounds. This study aimed to establish an efficient extraction protocol for PC and TPC and to evaluate their antimicrobial efficacy in vitro against Colletotrichum orchidearum, Fusarium nirenbergiae, and Alternaria sp. isolated from hydroponically grown lettuce. The phytopathogens were identified based on phylogenetic analyses using sequences from the ITS, EF1-α, GAPDH, and RPB2 gene regions. This is the first report of C. orchidearum in hydroponic lettuce culture in Brazil, expanding its known host range. Extracts were obtained using hydroalcoholic solvents and phosphate buffer (PB), combined with ultrasound-assisted extraction (bath and probe). The extracts were tested for in vitro antifungal activity. Data were analyzed by ANOVA (p < 0.05), followed by Tukey’s test. The combination of the PB and ultrasound probe resulted in the highest PC (95.6 mg·g−1 biomass) and TPC (21.9 mg GAE·g−1) yields, using 10% (w/v) biomass. After UV sterilization, the extract retained its PC and TPC content. The extract inhibited C. orchidearum by up to 53.52% after three days and F. nirenbergiae by 54.17% on the first day. However, it promoted the growth of Alternaria sp. These findings indicate that S. platensis extracts are a promising alternative for the biological control of C. orchidearum and F. nirenbergiae in hydroponic systems. Full article

Background and Objectives: Transcatheter heart valve (THV) selection is challenging as self-expanding valves (SEVs) are associated with lower post-procedural mean aortic gradients, while balloon-expandable valves (BEVs) have lower rates of paravalvular leak (PVL) and permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI). We aimed to compare the 30-day and 1-year outcomes following Myval BEV (Meril Life Sciences, Vapi, Gujarat, India) and intra-annular Portico SEV (Abbott, St. Paul, MN, USA) implantation. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data from the all-comer TAVI registry of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, Slovenia, from October 2017 to August 2023. Safety and efficacy outcomes following Myval BEV and Portico SEV implantation were compared overall and after propensity score matching. Results: Of the total 1152 THVs implanted, 97 patients (8%) received a Myval BEV and 47 (4%) a Portico SEV. After propensity score matching, there were no significant differences between the two patient cohorts regarding 30-day (Myval 0.0% vs. Portico 2.9%, p = 1.000) and 1-year mortality (Myval 0.0% vs. Portico 5.9%, p = 0.492). Likewise, the rates of new PPI, device failure (mean aortic gradient and more than mild PVL), and periprocedural in-hospital complications were comparable between the two groups. Analysis of Calcaneal Fracture-Related Complications—A Retrospective Chart Review

Background/Objectives: The calcaneus is the most commonly injured tarsal bone, potentially resulting in long-term functional deficiencies and disability. The type of treatment mainly depends on fracture type and morphology. Treatment of these fractures can be challenging due to a limited soft tissue envelope and is frequently associated with complications. The aim of this study was to classify fracture types and identify factors associated with in-hospital complications. Methods: Patients with calcaneal fractures treated at our level I trauma center between 1997 and 2017 were included. Demographic data, comorbidities, fracture characteristics, type of treatment, complications and revisions, compliance and accompanying injuries were evaluated. Results: A total of 238 patients (m = 163, f = 75) at a mean age of 40 years sustaining either uni- or bilateral calcaneal fracture resulting in a total of 288 calcaneal fractures. Concomitant injuries were present in 103 patients (35.9%). Traumatic spine lesions were present in 21.9%. Complications were recorded in 59 fractures (20.5%). Open fractures were more likely to develop complications (76.0% vs. 15.2%, p < 0.001). Significant complication (33% vs. 14%, p < 0.001) and wound complication rates (29% vs. 10%, p < 0.001) were found in multiple-injured patients. All open fractures were surgically treated on the day of admission. In calcaneal fractures with a Böhler angle below 0 degrees, more complications were seen (33% vs. 17%, p < 0.05). Conclusions: High complication rates following calcaneal fractures were detected, with an increased likelihood in open fractures and in patients with multiple injuries. A negative Böhler angle was associated with worse outcomes. Full article

The present study evaluated the effect of adding 0% (control), 30%, 40% and 50% SPMs (small-peptide chelating trace minerals) to replace ITMs (inorganic trace minerals) in the diets of Litopenaeus vannamei; 720 shrimp were randomly assigned to four treatments (six replicates per group, 30 shrimp per replicate) in a 42-day feeding trial. There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) among the control, 40% SPM and 50% SPM groups in terms of the survival rate, weight gain rate, specific growth rate, hepatosomatic index, condition factor, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, or protein efficiency ratio; however, protein efficiency ratio was reduced in the 30% SPM group (p < 0.05). Glucose, triglyceride, and aspartate aminotransferase levels in the hemolymph of the 30% SPM group were significantly increased (p < 0.05), while the glucose and aspartate aminotransferase levels were also significantly increased in the 40% SPM group (p < 0.05). In the 50% SPM group, the glucose and triglyceride levels were also significantly increased (p < 0.05). Hepatopancreatic alkaline phosphatase activity was elevated at 40% SPM, and alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, glutathione peroxidase, and total antioxidant capacity activities were significantly increased in the 50% SPM group (p < 0.05). The moisture content and drip loss were reduced in both the 40% and 50% SPM groups (p < 0.05). Therefore, replacing 40–50% ITMs with SPMs can maintain growth performance while enhancing physiological functions. In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrate that the incorporation of 30–50% SPMs into one’s diet constitutes a viable alternative to 100% ITMs. Full article

Background: RSV remains a leading cause of infant hospitalization worldwide, and the recently approved nirsevimab could represent an effective and safe prophylactic strategy to prevent severe infections in the general neonatal population. Objectives: We conducted a retrospective observational monocentric pilot study in a mixed preterm/term birth cohort to add real-world evidence of the efficacy and safety of nirsevimab in preventing severe RSV infection. Methods: We included a total of 2035 consecutive infants admitted to the Neonatal Unit, University Hospital “San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d’Aragona”, Salerno, Italy, from November 2024 to April 2025. We evaluated 30-day safety profiles and season-wide RSV infection rates, and the outcomes were also compared to newborns’ birth rate in the two previous seasons (2022–2023 and 2023–2024). Results: After the introduction of nirsevimab, a lower RSV infection rate was reported compared to previous seasons, and no adverse effects were observed. Compared to previous seasons, the clinical outcomes were more favorable, as only one unvaccinated neonate with RSV infection required invasive ventilation. Conclusions: In this real-world analysis, we demonstrated a good short-term safety profile of nirsevimab, as well as a potentially high efficacy in the general neonatal population with lower RSV infection incidence. However, future studies are needed to better assess its long-term safety and season-wide efficacy. Full article

Gaming has evolved into a cultural phenomenon with a global reach, captivating millions of individuals. Nevertheless, little is known about this population. We aim to physiologically characterise the Portuguese gamers, bearing in mind that phase angle (PhA) is a general indicator of health, to check possible correlations between body composition, strength, and nutrition. A sample of 35 male gamers (individuals who play video games) was evaluated for anthropometry; body composition through DXA for whole-body bone mineral content (BMC), fat-free mass (FFM, kg), fat mass, and visceral adipose tissue, and through BIA (bioelectrical impedance analysis) for total body water (TBW), water pools (extracellular water and intracellular water, ICW), and PhA; strength through maximal isometric handgrip strength using a dynamometer; and nutritional intake using a three-day food record. Results show that participants are within reference metrics for all the analysed variables except regarding protein and carbohydrate intake (all values are above and below the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges, respectively). A positive correlation was observed between PhA and TBW, ICW, handgrip strength, BMC and FFM, and a negative correlation with fat mass (absolute, percentage and visceral). In conclusion, PhA correlates with body composition variables, which aligns with previous research as a predictor of health and performance. Full article

This report presents the first complete natal dispersal trajectory of a female Montagu’s Harrier Circus pygargus, tracked in real time from fledging to first breeding using high-resolution continuous Global Positioning System (GPS) telemetry. The bird’s first flight occurred on 26 July 2024, initiating a 31-day post-fledging dependence phase (PFDP), followed by a 23-day pre-migratory phase (PMP), during which it explored areas up to 280.8 km from the nest and eventually settled ca. 190 km away in the Sirente-Velino Regional Park. From there, autumn migration began on 18 September 2024. The bird reached its first wintering site in Mali by 15 October. It used four wintering areas over 178 days, with a winter home range of 37,615.02 km2. Spring migration started on 11 April 2025 and lasted 21 days, ending with arrival in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park (Central Italy) on 2 May. The bird used two main sites during the pre-breeding phase (PRBP) before laying eggs on 2 June 2025. The natal dispersal distance, from birthplace to nest site, was 151.28 km. Over 311 days, it covered a total of 14,522.23 km. These findings highlight the value of advanced telemetry in revealing early-life movement ecology and are useful for understanding species-specific patterns of survival, reproduction, and space use and can inform conservation actions.
