Objective: The accurate visualization of root canal systems on periapical radiographs is critical for successful endodontic treatment. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of several image enhancement algorithms—including a novel Total Variation–Contrast-Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (TV-CLAHE) technique—in improving the detectability of root canal configurations in mandibular incisors, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) as the gold standard. A null hypothesis was tested, assuming that enhancement methods would not significantly improve root canal detection compared to original radiographs. Method: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 60 periapical radiographs of mandibular incisors, resulting in 420 images after applying seven enhancement techniques: Histogram Equalization (HE), Contrast-Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE), CLAHE optimized with Pelican Optimization Algorithm (CLAHE-POA), Global CLAHE (G-CLAHE), k-Caputo Fractional Differential Operator (KCFDO), and the proposed TV-CLAHE. Four experienced observers (two radiologists and two dentists) independently assessed root canal visibility. Subjective evaluation was performed using an own scale inspired by a 5-point Likert scale, and the detection accuracy was compared to the CBCT findings. Quantitative metrics including Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), image entropy, and Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) were calculated to objectively assess image quality. Results: Root canal detection accuracy improved across all enhancement methods, with the proposed TV-CLAHE algorithm achieving the highest performance (93–98% accuracy), closely approaching CBCT-level visualization. G-CLAHE also showed substantial improvement (up to 92%). Statistical analysis confirmed significant inter-method differences (p < 0.001). TV-CLAHE outperformed all other techniques in subjective quality ratings and yielded superior SNR and entropy values. Conclusions: Advanced image enhancement methods, particularly TV-CLAHE, significantly improve root canal visibility in 2D radiographs and offer a practical, low-cost alternative to CBCT in routine dental diagnostics. These findings support the integration of optimized contrast enhancement techniques into endodontic imaging workflows to reduce the risk of missed canals and improve treatment outcomes. Full article

This comprehensive review examines the role of septoplasty in the pediatric population, emphasizing its therapeutic significance in relieving nasal obstruction and facilitating normal craniofacial growth. Despite the evident advantages of septoplasty, its application in young patients remains a subject of ongoing debate. This issue is primarily characterized by concerns regarding the still-developing immaturity of nasal cartilage, potential intraoperative and postoperative risks, and the current absence of robust data on long-term outcomes following septoplasty. Common complications such as bleeding, septal perforation, saddle nose deformity, and persistent nasal obstruction are reported in the literature; however, many studies lack long-term follow-up data on the incidence of these adverse events and revision rates, which may be higher compared to adult populations, often leading to the need for secondary surgical interventions. Strict inclusion criteria and comprehensive patient selection are paramount to maximize therapeutic success while minimizing complications. Current evidence suggests that appropriately indicated septoplasty can improve airway patency, support optimal facial development, and reduce the risk of secondary sinonasal pathology. There is a significant necessity for additional prospective, large-scale studies to establish standardized therapeutic guidelines and management strategies for this specific population, thereby ensuring effective and evidence-based pediatric otolaryngologic care. Background/Objectives: Rapid eye movements (REMs) during sleep were initially associated with dreaming, suggesting a relationship between REMs and dream content; however, this hypothesis was questioned by their differences with the REMs during wakefulness and the evidence that REMs are also present in blind individuals with no visual dreaming. Successive studies have focused on the phenomenology and physiological significance of REMs during sleep. REMs are categorized as expressions of the phasic REM component, which is characterized by bursts of eye movements, whereas the tonic REM component is characterized by quiescent periods without eye movements. Methods: The study is a retrospective analysis of 105 sleep records from 15 subjects. We analyzed the two components, tonic and phasic REM, across the sleep period, the REM activity in the first 5 min and in the last 5 min of each REM period were also assessed. Results: Phasic epochs were more represented than tonic epochs across the whole night period. REM activity in the first and last five minutes of an REM period presented different, although non-significant, patterns across the night. REM activity in the first 5 min showed a curvilinear profile, whereas REM activity in the last 5 min showed a linear increasing trend. A significant correlation was found between the REM activity in the first 5 min of the REM period and the total duration of the REM period. Conclusions: According to our results, the analysis of REM activity and the focus on segments of an REM period could provide more information both on the temporal evolution of REM activity within an REM period and on the possible role of REMs in REM sleep regulation and its significance in psychiatric and neurological disorders. (1) Background: This article aims to understand the forms and elements through which the inhabitants of the city of Medellin have configured their subjectivity in the context of the application of neoliberal policies in the last two decades. In this way, we can approach the frameworks of understanding that constitute a fundamental part of the individuation processes in which the incorporation of their subjectivities is evidenced in neoliberal contexts that, in the historical process, have been converging with authoritarian, antidemocratic and neoconservative elements. (2) Method: A qualitative approach with a hermeneutic-interpretative paradigm was used. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 41 inhabitants of Medellín who were politically identified with right-wing or center-right positions. Data analysis included thematic coding to identify patterns of thought and points of view. (3) Results: Participants associate success with individual effort and see state intervention as an obstacle to development. They reject redistributive policies, arguing that they generate dependency. In addition, they justify authoritarian models of government in the name of security and progress, from a moral superiority, which is related to a negative and stigmatizing perception of progressive sectors and a negative view of the social rule of law and public policies with social sense. (4) Conclusions: The naturalization of merit as a guiding principle, the perception of themselves as morally superior based on religious values that grant a subjective place of certainty and goodness; the criminalization of expressions of political leftism, mobilizations and redistributive reforms and support for policies that establish authoritarianism and perpetuate exclusion and structural inequalities, closes roads to a participatory democracy that enables social and economic transformations. As the use of data models and data science techniques in industrial processes grows exponentially, the question arises: to what extent can these techniques impact the future of manufacturing processes? This article examines the potential future impacts of these models based on an assessment of existing trends and practices. The drive towards digital-oriented manufacturing and cyber-based process optimization and control has brought many opportunities and challenges. On one hand, issues of data acquisition, handling, and quality for proper database building have become important subjects. On the other hand, the reliable utilization of this available data for optimization and control has inspired much research. This research work discusses the fundamental question of how far these models can help design and/or improve existing processes, highlighting their limitations and challenges. Furthermore, it reviews state-of-the-art practices and their successes and failures in material process applications, including casting, extrusion, and additive manufacturing (AM), and presents some quantitative indications. Background: Against the backdrop of the large-scale and intensive development of the livestock industry, enhancing the reproductive efficiency of cattle has become a crucial factor in industrial development. Holstein cows, as the most predominant dairy cattle breed globally, are characterized by high milk yield and excellent milk quality. However, their reproductive efficiency is comprehensively influenced by a variety of complex factors, and improving their reproductive performance faces numerous challenges. The ovary, as the core organ of the female reproductive system, plays a decisive role in embryonic development and pregnancy maintenance. It is not only the site where eggs are produced and developed but it also regulates the cow’s estrous cycle, ovulation process, and the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy by secreting various hormones. The normal functioning of the ovary is crucial for the smooth development of the embryo and the successful maintenance of pregnancy. Methods: Currently, traditional sequencing technologies have obvious limitations in deciphering ovarian function and reproductive regulatory mechanisms. To overcome the bottlenecks of traditional sequencing technologies, this study selected Holstein cows as the research subjects. Ovarian samples were collected from one pregnant and one non-pregnant Holstein cow, and single-nucleus transcriptome sequencing technology was used to conduct an in-depth study on the ovarian cells of Holstein cows. Results: By constructing a cell type-specific molecular atlas of the ovaries, nine different cell types were successfully identified. This study compared the proportions of ovarian cell types under different physiological states and found that the proportion of endothelial cells decreased during pregnancy, while the proportions of granulosa cells and luteal cells increased significantly. In terms of functional enrichment analysis, oocytes during both pregnancy and non-pregnancy play roles in the “cell cycle” and “homologous recombination” pathways. However, non-pregnant oocytes are also involved in the “progesterone-mediated oocyte maturation” pathway. Luteal cells during pregnancy mainly function in the “cortisol synthesis and secretion” and “ovarian steroidogenesis” pathways; non-pregnant luteal cells are mainly enriched in pathway processes such as the “AMPK signaling pathway”, “pyrimidine metabolism”, and “nucleotide metabolism”. Cell communication analysis reveals that there are 51 signaling pathways involved in the pregnant ovary, with endothelial cells, granulosa cells, and luteal cells serving as the core communication hubs. In the non-pregnant ovary, there are 48 pathways, and the interaction between endothelial cells and stromal cells is the dominant mode. Conclusions: This study provides new insights into the regulatory mechanisms of reproductive efficiency in Holstein cows. The differences in the proportions of ovarian cell types, functional pathways, and cell communication patterns under different physiological states, especially the increase in the proportions of granulosa cells and luteal cells during pregnancy and the specificity of related functional pathways, indicate that these cells play a crucial role in the reproductive process of cows. These findings also highlight the importance of ovarian cells in pathways such as “cell cycle”, “homologous recombination”, and “progesterone-mediated oocyte maturation”, as well as the cell communication mechanisms in regulating ovarian function and reproductive performance. Background/Objectives: This study investigated the association between cochlear implant (CI) users’ assessed perception of musical sound quality and their subjective music perception and music-related quality of life (QoL). The aim was to provide a comprehensive evaluation by integrating a relatively objective Turkish Multiple Stimulus with Hidden Reference and Anchor (TR-MUSHRA) test and a subjective music questionnaire. Methods: Thirty CI users and thirty normal-hearing (NH) adults were assessed. Perception of sound quality was measured using the TR-MUSHRA test. Subjective assessments were conducted with the Music-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire (MuRQoL). Results: TR-MUSHRA results showed that while NH participants rated all filtered stimuli as perceptually different from the original, CI users provided similar ratings for stimuli with adjacent high-pass filter settings, indicating less differentiation in perceived sound quality. On the MuRQoL, groups differed on the Frequency subscale but not the Importance subscale. Critically, no significant correlation was found between the TR-MUSHRA scores and the MuRQoL subscale scores in either group. Conclusions: The findings demonstrate that TR-MUSHRA is an effective tool for assessing perceived sound quality relatively objectively, but there is no relationship between perceiving sound quality differences and measures of self-reported musical engagement and its importance. Subjective music experience may represent different domains beyond the perception of sound quality. Therefore, successful auditory rehabilitation requires personalized strategies that consider the multifaceted nature of music perception beyond simple perceptual judgments. Full article

This study examined data from participants who completed the SLeep Education for Everyone Program (SLEEP) to explore how various demographic variables affected sleep outcomes and to determine which participant characteristics predicted success. A total of 104 individuals participated. The Sleep Hygiene Index (SHI) measured undesirable sleep behaviors; the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) assessed sleep quality and self-reported sleep duration. Participant demographic information was collected at baseline. A mixed ANOVA evaluated group differences, and a multiple linear regression model identified predictors of sleep improvements. Change in SHI scores from pre- to post-intervention demonstrated a significant time × group interaction between Black and white participants (p = 0.024); further analysis indicated Black participants improved more. Better baseline scores predicted more favorable post-intervention outcomes for SHI, PSQI, and sleep duration. Fewer chronic conditions predicted better post-intervention SHI and PSQI scores. Older age also predicted better SHI scores. More favorable initial scores, fewer chronic conditions, and older age were the strongest predictors of positive outcomes following SLEEP. Improved sleep hygiene, sleep quality, and sleep duration were observed over time within subjects across all groups. In summary, SLEEP appears to be effective. Further work exploring challenges experienced by younger participants or those with multiple co-morbidities is warranted. Full article

Hemorrhage is the leading cause of preventable death in trauma care, requiring rapid and accurate detection to guide effective interventions. Hemorrhagic shock can be masked by underlying compensatory mechanisms, which may lead to delayed decision-making that can compromise casualty care. In this proof-of-concept study, we aimed to develop and evaluate machine learning models to predict Percent Estimated Blood Loss from a photoplethysmography waveform, offering non-invasive, field deployable solutions. Different model types were tuned and optimized using data captured during a hemorrhage and resuscitation swine study. Through this optimization process, we evaluated different time-lengths of prediction windows, machine learning model architectures, and data normalization approaches. Models were successful at predicting Percent Estimated Blood Loss in blind swine subjects with coefficient of determination values exceeding 0.8. This provides evidence that Percent Estimated Blood Loss can be accurately derived from non-invasive signals, improving its utility for trauma care and casualty triage in the pre-hospital and emergency medicine environment. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as a promising platform for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) due to their mobility and deployment flexibility. By adaptively adjusting their flight trajectories, UAVs can maintain favorable line-of-sight (LoS) communication links and sensing angles, thus enhancing overall system performance in dynamic and complex environments. However, ensuring physical layer security (PLS) in such UAV-assisted ISAC systems remains a significant challenge, particularly in the presence of mobile users and potential eavesdroppers. This manuscript proposes a joint optimization framework that simultaneously designs robust transmit beamforming and UAV trajectories to secure downlink communication for multiple ground users. At each time slot, the UAV predicts user positions and maximizes the secrecy sum-rate, subject to constraints on total transmit power, multi-target sensing quality, and UAV mobility. To tackle this non-convex problem, we develop an efficient optimization algorithm based on successive convex approximation (SCA) and constrained optimization by linear approximations (COBYLA). Numerical simulations validate that the proposed framework effectively enhances the secrecy performance while maintaining high-quality sensing, achieving near-optimal performance under realistic system constraints. Increasing automation and the rapidly growing use of robots in industrial as well as social areas result in a greater need for research regarding collaboration between humans and robots. Key factors for a safe and successful combination of human and robot abilities include acceptance and trust in the robot. In order to prevent physical and psychological harm to humans, reducing these negative emotions and increasing trust and acceptance are essential. One way to achieve this is through the use of virtual training methods and environments. However, current research scarcely covers this approach. Therefore, this research focusses on an experimental approach to investigate emotional and psychophysiological (ECG, EDA) reactions while performing a collaborative assembly task (screwing) with an industrial robot in a real and a virtual setting, respectively. The study sample consisted of 46 participants (23 female) with an age range from 20 to 58 years. The results of the analyzed subjective and objective psychophysiological (cardiovascular and electrodermal responses) measures provide more information regarding the suitability of virtual trainings for human–robot collaboration. Differences in task complexity were measurable in both virtual and real environments. Furthermore, gender differences were also shown. Full article

Background/Objectives: This study aims to uncover the variables related to the success of the intervention. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on patients who underwent joint replacement surgery utilizing a customized alloplastic system between 2018 and 2023, comprising subjects with complete records for both the planning and follow-up phases. The Student’s t-test was applied with a significance threshold of p < 0.05. Results: Forty-eight subjects were admitted for initial analysis, and 31 subjects were evaluated with a minimum follow-up of 1 year and a maximum of 7 years, with a mean age of 36.37 ± 15.53. The TMJ diagnosis was mainly with degenerative TMJ disease, followed by ankylosis and craniofacial syndromes, and an average of 2.1 ± 1.2 previous surgeries were noted. Degenerative joint disease correlated with increased pain (p < 0.0001) and a higher prevalence of prior joint surgery (p < 0.0001). Thirty-one subjects were followed up with 47 prostheses installed; 74.4% underwent complementary surgery with other facial osteotomies. Significant improvements (p < 0.0001) were observed when comparing pain levels pre- and postoperatively, with a decrease from 5.5 (±2.3) to 2.2 (±0.4). Concerning the interincisal opening, there was a significant increase (p < 0001) from 25.85 (±10.2) mm to 35.93 (±4.2) mm in mouth opening. TMJ replacement treatment is efficient and effective, demonstrating stability in follow-up assessments for up to 7 years. Conclusions: The indications for replacement are diverse and may benefit patients who have not yet progressed to end-stage TMJ disease. Full article

Identification of Salt Tolerance-Related NAC Genes in Wheat Roots Based on RNA-Seq and Association Analysis

Excavating new salt tolerance genes and utilizing them to improve salt-tolerant wheat varieties is an effective way to utilize salinized soil. The NAC gene family plays an important role in plant response to salt stress. In this study, 446 NAC sequences were isolated from the whole genome of common wheat and classified into 118 members based on subgenome homology, named TaNAC1 to TaNAC118. Transcriptome analysis of salt-tolerant wheat breeding line CH7034 roots revealed that 144 of the 446 TaNAC genes showed significant changes in expression levels at least two time points after NaCl treatment. These differentially expressed TaNACs were divided into four groups, and Group 4, containing the largest number of 78 genes, exhibited a successive upregulation trend after salt treatment. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the TaNAC gene family in 114 wheat germplasms were retrieved from the public database and were subjected to further association analysis with the relative salt-injury rates (RSIRs) of six root phenotypes, and then 20 SNPs distributed on chromosomes 1B, 2B, 2D, 3B, 3D, 5B, 5D, and 7A were correlated with phenotypes involving salt tolerance (p < 0.0001). Combining the results of RT-qPCR and association analysis, we further selected three NAC genes from Group 4 as candidate genes that related to salt tolerance, including TaNAC26-D3.2, TaNAC33-B, and TaNAC40-B. Compared with the wild type, the roots of the tanac26-d3.2 mutant showed shorter length, less volume, and reduced biomass after being subjected to salt stress. Four SNPs of TaNAC26-D3.2 formed two haplotypes, Hap1 and Hap2, and germplasms with Hap2 exhibited better salt tolerance. Snp3, in exon 3 of TaNAC26-D3.2, causing a synonymous mutation, was developed into a Kompetitive Allele-Specific PCR marker, K3, to distinguish the two haplotypes, which can be further used for wheat germplasm screening or marker-assisted breeding. Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is being increasingly promoted as a means to enhance diagnostic accuracy, to streamline workflows, and to improve overall care quality in primary care. However, empirical evidence on how primary care physicians (PCPs) perceive, engage with, and emotionally respond to AI technologies in everyday clinical settings remains limited. Concerns persist regarding AI’s usability, transparency, and potential impact on professional identity, workload, and the physician–patient relationship. Methods: This qualitative study investigated the lived experiences and perceptions of 28 PCPs practicing in diverse outpatient settings across Germany. Participants were purposively sampled to ensure variation in age, practice characteristics, and digital proficiency. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews, which were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and subjected to rigorous thematic analysis employing Mayring’s qualitative content analysis framework. Results: Participants demonstrated a fundamentally ambivalent stance toward AI integration in primary care. Perceived advantages included enhanced diagnostic support, relief from administrative burdens, and facilitation of preventive care. Conversely, physicians reported concerns about workflow disruption due to excessive system prompts, lack of algorithmic transparency, increased cognitive and emotional strain, and perceived threats to clinical autonomy and accountability. The implications for the physician–patient relationship were seen as double-edged: while some believed AI could foster trust through transparent use, others feared depersonalization of care. Crucial prerequisites for successful implementation included transparent and explainable systems, structured training opportunities, clinician involvement in design processes, and seamless integration into clinical routines. Conclusions: Primary care physicians’ engagement with AI is marked by cautious optimism, shaped by both perceived utility and significant concerns. Effective and ethically sound implementation requires co-design approaches that embed clinical expertise, ensure algorithmic transparency, and align AI applications with the realities of primary care workflows. Moreover, foundational AI literacy should be incorporated into undergraduate health professional curricula to equip future clinicians with the competencies necessary for responsible and confident use. These strategies are essential to safeguard professional integrity, support clinician well-being, and maintain the humanistic core of primary care. Full article

Based on a literature review, the present article aims to present ecotourism as a transformative factor in the economic, social, cultural, and environmental contexts, revealing key elements for the sustainable development of ecotourism. To ensure that this objective is met, the review combines the insights of classical authors and many recent authors who have best addressed the subject. The review carefully selected consensual and contradictory arguments, reflecting on the relevance of each group, particularly in aspects such as the influence of emotional experience on behaviour and satisfaction, strategy and competitive advantage, cooperation and sustainability, and the influence of resilience on ecotourism. The impact of each perspective was presented without ignoring the major constraints that ecotourism faces in its search for a position in the tourism industry. This led the study to accept the fact that the active participation of the community is indispensable in the formula for the success of ecotourism. Some statistical data were consulted and analysed, which enabled the study to determine the quantitative impact of ecotourism on economic, social, and environmental life. In terms of benefits to communities, the review clarifies the fact that ecotourism serves as an instrument that mobilizes not only the additional value of products and services traded in the process, but also the return on investments and job creation. The combination of visiting activities with the involvement of tour guides contributes to maximizing profits in the destinations, thus supporting solid economic, social, and environmental development for the benefit of both ecotourism promoters and local communities. However, the analysis makes it clear that the economic, social, and environmental benefit depends on the degree of involvement of the local population. In terms of usability, for other studies, this review can contribute to the understanding and positioning of ecotourism in the search for a balance between satisfying socioeconomic and environmental interests. Additionally, it can serve as an aid to policy makers in their decisions related to ecotourism. Full article
