This study examined the impact of storage and operational aging on the thermal stability, structural degradation, and electrical properties of styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) compound by analyzing three distinct materials: a laboratory-stored sample, an operationally aged one, and an original unaged reference. Thermal degradation was analyzed through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which examined weight loss as a function of temperature and time at different heating rates. Results showed that the onset temperature and peak position in the 457 °C to 483 °C range remained stable. The activation energy (Ea) was determined using the Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose (KAS), Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO), and Friedman methods, with the original unaged sample’s (OUS) Ea averaging 203.7 kJ/mol, decreasing to 163.47 kJ/mol in the laboratory-stored sample (LSS), and increasing to 224.18 kJ/mol in the operationally aged sample (OAS). The Toop equation was applied to estimate the thermal degradation lifetime at a 50% conversion rate. Since the material had been exposed to electricity, the evolution of electrical conductivity was studied and found to have remained stable after storage at around 0.070 S/cm. However, after operational aging, it showed a considerable increase in conductivity, to 0.321 S/cm. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was employed to analyze microstructural degradation and chemical changes, providing insights into the impact of aging on thermal stability and electrical properties. This study evaluates the replacement of petroleum-based naphthenic oil with four types of soybean-derived alternatives—virgin soybean oil (SBO), epoxidized SBO (ESBO), expired SBO, and recycled SBO—in styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) composites. The materials were tested in both staining rubber (SR) and non-staining rubber (NSR) systems to assess processing characteristics, mechanical performance, and environmental durability. Among the alternatives, SBO demonstrated the best overall performance, improving processability and tensile strength by over 10%, while ESBO enhanced ozone resistance by 35% due to its epoxide functionality. Expired and recycled SBOs maintained essential mechanical properties within 90% of virgin SBO values. The full replacement of CH450 with SBO in tire prototypes resulted in burst strength exceeding 1000 kPa and stable appearance after 5000 km of road testing. To validate industrial relevance, the developed green tire was exhibited at the 2025 Taipei International Cycle Show, attracting interest from international buyers and stakeholders for its eco-friendly composition and carbon footprint reduction potential, thereby demonstrating both technical feasibility and commercial viability. The disposal of agro-industrial waste is a pressing environmental issue. At the same time, due to the high silica content in specific agricultural residues, their processed products can be utilised in various industrial sectors as substitutes for commercial materials. This study investigates the key technological, physico-mechanical, and viscoelastic properties of industrial elastomeric compounds based on synthetic styrene–butadiene rubber, intended for the tread of summer passenger car tyres, when replacing the commercially used highly reinforcing silica filler (SF), Extrasil 150VD brand (white carbon black), with a carbon–silica filler (CSF). The CSF is produced by carbonising a finely ground mixture of rice production waste (rice husks and stems) in a pyrolysis furnace at 550–600 °C without oxygen. It was found that replacing 20 wt.pts. of silica filler with CSF in industrial tread formulations improves processing parameters (Mooney viscosity increases by up to 5.3%, optimal vulcanisation time by up to 9.2%), resistance to plastic deformation (by up to 7.7%), and tackiness of the rubber compounds (by 31.3–34.4%). Viscoelastic properties also improved: the loss modulus and mechanical loss tangent decreased by up to 24.0% and 14.3%, respectively; the rebound elasticity increased by up to 6.3% and fatigue resistance by up to 2.7 thousand cycles; and the internal temperature of samples decreased by 7 °C. However, a decrease in tensile strength (by 10.7–27.0%) and an increase in wear rate (up to 43.3% before and up to 22.5% after thermal ageing) were observed. Nevertheless, the overall results of this study indicate that the CSF derived from the carbonisation of rice production waste—containing both silica and carbon components—can effectively be used as a partial replacement for the commercially utilised reinforcing silica filler in the production of tread rubber for summer passenger car tyres. This paper investigates the interplay between rubber network damage, carbon black (CB) network damage, heat exchange, and voiding mechanisms in filled Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) under cyclic loading. To do so, three carbon black filled SBR composites, SBR5, SBR30 and SBR60 are studied. The study aims to quantify molecular damage and its role in inducing reversible or irreversible heat flow and voiding behavior to inform the design of more resilient rubber composites with improved fatigue life and thermal management capabilities. The study effectively demonstrated how increasing carbon black content, particularly in SBR60, leads to a shift from mostly reversible to irreversible and cumulative damage mechanisms during cyclic loading, as evidenced by thermal, volumetric, and electrical resistivity changes. In particular, we identify a critical mechanical energy of 7 MJ.m−3 associated with such transition. These irreversible changes are strongly linked to the damage and re-arrangement of the carbon black filler network, as well as the rubber chains network and the formation/growth of voids, while reversible mechanisms are likely related to rubber chains alignment associated with entropic elasticity. In this research, a single composite-type stretchable triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is proposed for efficient energy harvesting and handwriting recognition. The composite TENGs were fabricated by blending dielectric barium titanate (BT) and conductive carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in varying amounts into a styrene–butadiene rubber matrix. The energy harvesting efficiency depends on the type and amount of fillers, as well as their dispersion within the matrix. Stearic acid modification of BT enables near-nanoscale filler distribution, resulting in high energy conversion efficiencies. The composite achieved power efficiency, power density, charge efficiency, and charge density values of 1.127 nW/N, 8.258 mW/m3, 0.146 nC/N, and 1.072 mC/m3, respectively, under only 2% cyclic compressive strain at 0.85 Hz. The material performs better at low stress–strain ranges, exhibiting higher charge efficiency. The generated charge in the TENG composite is well correlated with the compressive stress, which provides a minimum activation pressure of 0.144 kPa, making it suitable for low-pressure sensing applications. A flat composite with dimensions of 0.02 × 6 × 5 cm3 can produce a power density of 26.04 W/m3, a charge density of 0.205 mC/m3, and an output voltage of 10 V from a single hand pat. The rubber composite also demonstrates high accuracy in handwriting recognition across different individuals, with clear differences in sensitivity curves. Repeated attempts by the same person show minimal deviation (<5%) in writing time. Additionally, the presence of reinforcing fillers enhances mechanical strength and durability, making the composite suitable for long-term cyclic energy harvesting and wearable sensor applications. This study aimed to optimize the performance of pervious concrete (PC) while promoting sustainability using recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) waste, and silica fume (SF). The mixtures were developed using the Taguchi approach with four mix design factors, each at three levels: the water-to-binder ratio (w/b), RCA replacement percentage by weight of natural aggregates, the cement substitution rate with SF, and the SBR addition rate by binder mass. Thus, a total of nine mixes were prepared and tested for density, porosity, permeability, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and resistance to freezing and thawing. The results revealed that incorporating RCA and SBR decreased density and compressive strength but increased porosity and permeability. The performance of PC enhanced with SF addition and reduced w/b. TOPSIS was then employed to find the optimum mixture design proportions by considering multiple performance criteria. The results indicated that a high-performing sustainable PC mixture, with enhanced strength and durability characteristics, was formulated with a w/b ratio of 0.30, 25% RCA, 5% SF replacement, and 4% SBR addition. Traditional cementitious coating materials struggle to meet the performance criteria for protective coatings in complex environments. This study developed a polymer-modified cement-based coating material with polymer, silica fume (SF), and quartz sand (QS) as the principal admixtures. It also investigated the influence of material composition on the coating’s mechanical properties, durability, interfacial bond characteristics with concrete, and the durability enhancement of coated concrete. The results demonstrated that compared with ordinary cementitious coating material (OCCM), the interfacial bonding performance between 3% Styrene Butadiene Rubber Powder (SBR) coating material and concrete was improved by 42%; the frost resistance and sulfate erosion resistance of concrete protected by 6% polyurethane (PU) coating material were improved by 31.5% and 69.6%. The inclusion of polymers reduces the mechanical properties. The re-addition of silica fume can lower the porosity while increasing durability and strength. The coating material, mixed with 12% SF and 6% PU, exhibits mechanical properties not lower than those of OCCM. Meanwhile, the interfacial bonding performance and durability of the coated concrete have been improved by 45% and 48%, respectively. The grey relational analysis indicated that the coating material with the best comprehensive performance is the one mixed with 12% SF + 6% PU, and the grey correlation degree is 0.84. Full article

To obtain waterborne polymer-modified emulsified asphalt materials with better comprehensive performance, waterborne polymer modifiers including waterborne epoxy resin (WER)-reinforced styrene–butadiene–styrene block copolymer (SBS), waterborne acrylate (WA) or styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) emulsion were prepared. The mechanical strength, toughness, adhesion and impact resistance of these waterborne polymers were evaluated. Furthermore, the correlation between the performance indicators of the waterborne polymers was analyzed. Based on Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, the mechanism of WER-modified SBS and WA was characterized. The results show that adding 10%–15% WER can significantly improve the mechanical properties of the waterborne polymer. The performances of modified SBS and WA are better than that of modified SBR. When the content of WER is 10%, the tensile strength, elongation at break and pull-off strength of WER-modified SBS and WA are 4.80–6.38 MPa, 476.3%–579.6% and 1.62–1.70 MPa, respectively. The mechanical strength and breaking energy of the waterborne polymers show a significant linear correlation with their application properties such as adhesion, bonding and impact resistance. FTIR and TG analyses indicate that WER-modified SBS or WA prepared via emulsion blending undergo primarily physical modifications, enhancing thermal stability while promoting crosslinking and curing. Currently, research on the modification mechanisms of activated rubber/SBS (styrene–butadiene–styrene) composites and the microscopic processes involved remains limited. To investigate the impact of the rubber activation treatment combined with SBS modifier on asphalt modification, this study employs composite-modified asphalt formulations using either a conventional mix or activated rubber in conjunction with SBS. Infrared spectroscopy (IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized to analyze the chemical components and microscopic morphology of the composite-modified asphalt following activation treatment. Microscopic analysis revealed that the asphalt stirred for 20 min has a characteristic peak with a wave number of 966 cm−1, while the characteristic peak with a wave number of 700 cm−1 is not obvious. That is, the asphalt sample contains the polybutadiene component and a reduced amount of the polystyrene component. Therefore, it can be inferred that the asphalt sample only contains activated rubber, along with less SBS modifier content. Traditional rubber undergoes significant expansion reactions during the mixing stage, but there are difficulties in degradation, which leave large particles and reduce the proportions of the lightweight asphalt components. However, active rubber and SBS mainly expand and degrade more completely during the shear stage, forming many micro-volume particles in asphalt. Additionally, frequency scanning and multiple creep recovery tests were conducted to evaluate the high-temperature rheological properties of the asphalt. The results indicate that activated rubber, doped at 20%, and SBS, doped at 2%, significantly enhance the high-temperature rheological properties of the composite-modified asphalt compared to base asphalt, exhibiting a 417.16% increase in the complex modulus at 64 °C and 1 Hz. Intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation is often accompanied by large temperature differences in high-altitude cold regions. Therefore, investigating the aging behavior of SBR asphalt under intense UV radiation and large temperature differences is crucial for prolonging the lifespan and maintenance of styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR)-modified asphalt pavements in high-altitude cold regions. This study investigated the aging process of SBR-modified asphalt by analyzing the chemical components, microstructures, and micromechanics of both base and SBR-modified asphalt under combined effects. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were utilized to analyze this evolutionary process. The results indicated that the chemical components and microstructural properties of the SBR-modified asphalt underwent significant changes during the aging process under the combined effects of intense UV radiation and large temperature differences. The SBR-modified asphalt exhibited the same aging trend for both the chemical composition and microstructure of the matrix asphalt. However, its aging process in the SBR-modified asphalt was notably slower. This delay was primarily caused by the mesh structure of the SBR-modified asphalt, which created an initial buffer period during aging. Additionally, the degradation of SBR replenished the lost components in the asphalt colloid and inhibited the aging process. The research results indicated that the SBR-modified asphalt exhibited superior aging and cracking resistance with respect to the matrix asphalt. However, the critical cracking time for the surface cracks in the SBR-modified asphalt was earlier than that in the matrix asphalt under the combined effects. It was suggested to use the “modulus ratio” (defined as the Young’s modulus ratio of the surface asphalt layer to the underlying asphalt layer) to quantitatively assess the risk of surface cracking, with a higher modulus ratio indicating a greater risk of cracking or a higher degree of cracking. Passenger car tires (PCTs) usually consist of a silica/silane-filled Butadiene Rubber (BR) or Solution Styrene Butadiene (SSBR) tread compound. This system is widely used due to improvements observed in rolling resistance (RR) as well as wet grip compared to carbon black-filled compounds. However, the covalent bond that couples silica via silane with the rubber increases the challenge of recycling these products. Furthermore, this strong covalent bond is unable to reform once it is broken, leading to a deterioration in tire properties. This work aims to improve these negative aspects of silica-filled compounds by developing a novel coupling system based on non-covalent interactions, which exhibit a reversible feature. The formation of this new coupling was accomplished by reacting silica with silane and a phenolic resin in order to obtain simultaneous π–π interactions and hydrogen bonding. The reaction was performed using two different silanes (amino and epoxy silane) and an alkyl phenol–formaldehyde resin. The implementation of the new coupling resulted in improved crosslink density, better mechanical performance, superior fatigue behavior, and a similar rolling resistance indicator. Full article

However, because rubber powder does not easily swell in asphalt, it leads to poor storage stability and high viscosity, limiting its large-scale application. In this study, modified asphalt was prepared using desulfurized rubber powder (DRP) and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modifiers, aiming to identify the optimal formulation for enhanced performance. It was hypothesized that the combined use of DRP and SBS would produce synergistic effects, improving the overall mechanical and rheological properties of the asphalt. To test this, the effects of this composite modification were evaluated using Marshall tests (penetration, softening point, ductility, elastic recovery, and Brookfield viscosity) and Superpave tests (shear modulus, high-performance grade, rutting factor, fatigue factor, and creep and recovery). Additionally, moisture susceptibility, high-temperature stability, low-temperature cracking resistance, and fatigue resistance at the mixture level were assessed. Performance was evaluated according to the Chinese standard JT/T 798-2019 for rubberized asphalt using reclaimed tire rubber. Results show that DRP-modified asphalt demonstrates excellent temperature sensitivity, rutting resistance, deformation resistance, and fatigue performance. However, an excessive amount of DRP increases Brookfield viscosity, which negatively affects the workability of the asphalt binder. The addition of SBS further improves the softening point, ductility, and deformation recovery of the binder. Considering cost-effectiveness and overall performance, the optimal formulation was determined to be 25% DRP and 1% SBS. At this dosage, all performance indicators met the required standards. The rotational viscosity at 180 °C was approximately 35% lower than that of conventional rubber powder–modified asphalt, while the high-temperature rutting factor and fatigue resistance at medium-to-low temperatures outperformed those of SBS-modified asphalt. The mixture test results reveal that the gradation has an impact on the performance of the obtained mixture, but overall, the DRP-SBS composite-modified asphalt mixture has significant advantages in terms of performance and cost-effectiveness. However, in some applications, both are necessary. Therefore, three different kinds of modifiers, i.e., cementitious capillary crystalline waterproof materials (XYPEX), γ-methacryloxy-propyl-trimethoxy-silane (KH570), and styrene-butadiene rubber latex (SB), are employed to explore how modified mortar can possess excellent waterproofness, impermeability, and the water vapor transmission property simultaneously. Combining characterization techniques, the influencing factors of these three properties are studied. The results indicate that XYPEX promotes the formation of hydration products within pores, improves waterproofness and impermeability, but decreases the water vapor transmission property. KH570 introduces numerous pores ranging from 0.1 to 5 micrometers and enhances the hydrophobicity of mortar; at 1.25% and 2.5% contents, the modified mortar exhibits excellent waterproofness and water vapor transmission property but poor impermeability. SB introduces numerous air pores and forms polymer films; at 20% content, the modified mortar exhibits excellent waterproofness and water vapor transmission property, with impermeability remaining unchanged, making SB a favorable modifier that combines these three properties. Finally, the mechanisms of these three properties are discussed, which provides a theoretical reference for the control of mortar’s waterproofing, impermeability, and water vapor transmission. Gap-graded asphalt mixtures like stone mastic asphalt (SMA), porous asphalt (PA), and asphalt mixtures for very thin layers (fr. Béton Bitumineuse Très Mince—BBTM) are usually made with the use of SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) polymer-modified bitumen. This is a binder that allows one to achieve the required parameters, but at the same time, its use increases the costs of making pavement layers. An alternative to polymer-modified bitumen (SBS) is rubber-modified bitumen. The research presented in this publication includes an assessment of the resistance to permanent deformation and susceptibility to aging of SMA and porous asphalt (PA) mixtures containing both SBS polymer-modified bitumen and rubber-modified bitumen, where the modification process was carried out directly in the refinery. The laboratory tests of resistance to deformation were assessed based on the rutting test and on the assessment of the dynamic modulus (SPT). The changes in the tested asphalt mixtures after aging in laboratory conditions were assessed based on the changes in the stiffness modulus (IT-CY) and the changes in the indirect tensile strength (ITS) after the short-term and long-term aging processes. The presented research results clearly show that the use of rubber-modified bitumen produced in industrial conditions (i.e., in a refinery) allows one to obtain gap-graded mixtures that are as resistant to permanent deformation as mixtures containing SBS polymer-modified bitumen. Similar conclusions resulted from the study of susceptibility to aging. Changes after aging for both types of asphalt mixtures were at a similar level. The presented results clearly indicate that, in the case of gap-graded mixtures such as SMA- and PA-type mixtures, they meet the rutting and aging expectations when either expensive modified bitumen or a cheaper, more environmentally friendly alternative (rubber-modified bitumen) is used. The motivation of this research was to analyze the dynamic properties, mainly the loss modulus, of vulcanized immiscible blends of natural rubber (NR) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) in the glass transition zone, where the SBR phase is in a glassy state and the NR phase is in a rubbery state. The blends were cured at 433 and 443 K and studied around the glass transition using a dynamic mechanical analyzer. The dependence of the loss modulus on temperature was described by considering the phase separation, and the frequency dependence was also included to provide a deeper insight into the dynamic properties. This was achieved by integrating the mechanical model proposed by Zener, which considers a single relaxation time related to temperature using both the Arrhenius and Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann (VFT) relations. The best correlation with the data was obtained using the Arrhenius relationship. The activation energy of the NR phase increases with the NR content in the blend, while in the SBR phase, it varies slightly. The trends obtained are related to curative migration from the SBR to the NR phase, increasing the crosslink density at NR domain boundaries. These insights are valuable for optimizing the performance of these elastomeric blends in practical applications. Full article
