In remote sensing building detection tasks, data acquisition remains a critical bottleneck that limits both model performance and large-scale deployment. Due to the high cost of manual annotation, limited geographic coverage, and constraints of image acquisition conditions, obtaining large-scale, high-quality labeled datasets remains a significant challenge. To address this issue, this study proposes an automatic semantic labeling framework for remote sensing imagery. The framework leverages geospatial vector data provided by OpenStreetMap, precisely aligns it with high-resolution satellite imagery from Bing Maps through projection transformation, and incorporates a quality-aware sample filtering strategy to automatically generate accurate annotations for building detection. The resulting dataset comprises 36,647 samples, covering buildings in both urban and suburban areas across multiple cities. To evaluate its effectiveness, we selected three publicly available datasets—WHU, INRIA, and DZU—and conducted three types of experiments using the following four representative object detection models: SSD, Faster R-CNN, DETR, and YOLOv11s. The experiments include benchmark performance evaluation, input perturbation robustness testing, and cross-dataset generalization analysis. Results show that our dataset achieved a mAP at 0.5 intersection over union of up to 93.2%, with a precision of 89.4% and a recall of 90.6%, outperforming the open-source benchmarks across all four models. Furthermore, when simulating real-world noise in satellite image acquisition—such as motion blur and brightness variation—our dataset maintained a mean average precision of 90.4% under the most severe perturbation, indicating strong robustness. In addition, it demonstrated superior cross-dataset stability compared to the benchmarks. Finally, comparative experiments conducted on public test areas further validated the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed annotation framework. Full article

This article traces the historical evolution of mural painting as a medium of cultural expression from prehistoric cave art to contemporary street interventions. Adopting a diachronic and interdisciplinary approach, it investigates how muralism has developed across civilizations in relation to techniques, symbolic systems, social function, and its embeddedness in architectural and urban contexts. The analysis is structured around key historical periods using emblematic case studies to examine the interplay between materiality, iconography, and socio-political meaning. From sacred enclosures and civic monuments to post-industrial walls and digital projections, murals reflect shifting cultural paradigms and spatial dynamics. This study emphasizes how mural painting, once integrated into sacred and imperial architecture, has become a tool for public participation, protests, and urban storytelling. Particular attention is paid to the evolving relationship between wall painting and the spaces it inhabits, highlighting the transition from permanence to ephemerality and from monumentality to immediacy. This article contributes to mural studies by offering a comprehensive framework for understanding the technical and symbolic transformations of the medium while proposing new directions for research in the context of digital urbanism and cultural memory. In high-density and land-scarce urban environments such as Taipei—a typical example of compact development in East Asia—informal green spaces (IGSs)—defined as unmanaged or unplanned vegetated urban areas such as vacant lots, street verges, and railway margins—play a growing role in urban environmental and social dynamics. This study explores residents’ perceptions of IGSs and examines how these spaces contribute to urban sustainability and land governance. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines the literature review, field observations, and a structured public opinion survey in Taipei’s Wenshan District, the study identifies key perceived benefits and drawbacks of IGSs. Findings show that residents highly value IGSs for enhancing urban greenery, offering recreational opportunities, and promoting physical and mental health. However, concerns persist regarding safety, sanitation, and maintenance—particularly fears of waste accumulation, mosquito breeding, and risks to children. The results highlight the dual nature of IGSs as both vital ecological assets and potential sources of urban disorder. These insights underscore the need for inclusive, community-based governance models that can transform IGSs into legitimate components of green infrastructure. The study contributes to emerging discussions on adaptive urban land governance by proposing that informal spaces be strategically integrated into urban planning frameworks to enhance environmental equity, resilience, and citizen well-being. Urbanization has profoundly transformed land surface morphology and amplified thermal environmental modifications, culminating in intensified urban heat island (UHI) phenomena. Local climate zones (LCZs) provide a robust methodological framework for quantifying thermal heterogeneity and dynamics at local scales. Our study investigated the Changsha–Zhuzhou–Xiangtan urban agglomeration (CZXA) as a case study and systematically examined spatiotemporal patterns of LCZs and land surface temperature (LST) from 2002 to 2019, while elucidating mechanisms influencing urban thermal environments and proposing optimized cooling strategies. Key findings demonstrated that through multi-source remote sensing data integration, long-term LCZ classification was achieved with 1,592 training samples, maintaining an overall accuracy exceeding 70%. Landscape pattern analysis revealed that increased fragmentation, configurational complexity, and diversity indices coupled with diminished spatial connectivity significantly elevate LST. Rapid development of the city in the vertical direction also led to an increase in LST. Among seven urban morphological parameters, impervious surface fraction (ISF) and pervious surface fraction (PSF) demonstrated the strongest correlations with LST, showing Pearson coefficients of 0.82 and −0.82, respectively. Pearson coefficients of mean building height (BH), building surface fraction (BSF), and mean street width (SW) also reached 0.50, 0.55, and 0.66. Redundancy analysis (RDA) results revealed that the connectivity and fragmentation degree of LCZ_8 (COHESION8) was the most critical parameter affecting urban thermal environment, explaining 58.5% of LST. Based on these findings and materiality assessment, the regional cooling model of “cooling resistance surface–cooling source–cooling corridor–cooling node” of CZXA was constructed. In the future, particular attention should be paid to the shape and distribution of buildings, especially large, openly arranged buildings with one to three stories, as well as to controlling building height and density. Moreover, tailored protection strategies should be formulated and implemented for cooling sources, corridors, and nodes based on their hierarchical significance within urban thermal regulation systems. These research outcomes offer a robust scientific foundation for evidence-based decision-making in mitigating UHI effects and promoting sustainable urban ecosystem development across urban agglomerations. Urban pluvial flooding (UPF) is an increasingly critical issue due to rapid urbanization and intensified precipitation driven by climate change that yet remains understudied in the Caribbean. This study analyzes the effects of UPF resulting from the transformation of a natural karstic landscape into an urbanized area considering a sub-watershed in Chetumal, Southern Mexican Caribbean, as a case study. Hydrographic numerical modeling was conducted using the IBER 2.5.1 software and the SCS-CN method to estimate surface runoff for a critical UPF event across three stages: (i) 1928—natural condition; (ii) 1998—semi-urbanized (78% coverage); and (iii) 2015—urbanized (88% coverage). Urbanization led to the orthogonalization of the drainage network, an increase in the sub-watershed area (20%) and mainstream length (33%), flow velocities rising 10–100 times, a 52% reduction in surface roughness, and a 32% decrease in the potential maximum soil retention before runoff occurs. In urbanized scenarios, 53.5% of flooded areas exceeded 0.5 m in depth, compared to 16.8% in non-urbanized conditions. Community-based knowledge supported flood extent estimates with 44.5% of respondents reporting floodwater levels exceeding 0.50 m, primarily in streets. Only 43.1% recalled past flood levels, indicating a loss of societal memory, although risk perception remained high among directly affected residents. The reported UPF effects perceived in the area mainly related to housing damage (30.2%), mobility disruption (25.5%), or health issues (12.9%). Although UPF events are frequent, insufficient drainage infrastructure, altered runoff patterns, and limited access to public shelters and communication increased vulnerability. Full article

This study investigates the anthropogenic transformation of small- and medium-sized river basins within the Caspian Sea catchment. The basins of seven rivers—Sunzha, Sulak, Ulluchay, Karachay, Atachay, Haraz, and Gorgan—were selected as key study areas. For both the broader Caspian region, particularly its southwestern sector, and the selected study sites, trends in land cover types were analyzed, natural resource use practices were assessed, and population density dynamics were examined. Furthermore, a range of indices were calculated to quantify the degree of anthropogenic transformation, including the coefficient of anthropogenic transformation, the land degradation index, the urbanity index, the degree of anthropogenic transformation, coefficients of absolute and relative tension of the ecological and economic balance, and the natural protection coefficient. The study was conducted using geoinformation research methods and sets of geodata databases—the global LandScan population density database, the GHS Population Grid database, the ESRI land cover type dynamics database, and OpenStreetMap (OSM) data. The analysis was performed using the geoinformation programs QGIS and ArcGIS, and a large amount of literary and statistical data was additionally analyzed. It is shown that within the studied region, there has been a decrease in the number and density of the population, as a result of which the territories of river basins are experiencing an increasing anthropogenic impact, the woody type of land cover is decreasing, and the agricultural type is increasing. The most anthropogenically transformed river basins are Karachay, Haraz, and Gorgan. Full article

Sustainable urban development takes place in cities that encourage residents to adopt sustainable consumption behaviors. Cities are transforming towards achieving sustainable urban consumption, meeting the needs of communities without compromising the wealth of future generations. A key element of urban development is sustainable urban mobility, which helps improve residents’ quality of life and protect the environment. The development of sustainable mobility is possible thanks to, among others, investment in infrastructure that improves travel. One element of this infrastructure that plays an important role in sustainable mobility is parking lots. They have a significant impact on the quality of life in the city, and searching for available parking spaces is a serious problem in modern urban mobility. This article includes an analysis of parking data obtained from the Intelligent Paid Parking System in the context of sustainable urban consumption. Three streets in the city of Rzeszów were analyzed. For the period under study, the factors determined included parking space utilization indicators, whose average value for the streets analyzed was in the range of 57–59%, and a turnover indicator, whose average value was in the range of 4.8–6.0. These indicators assessed the degree to which city residents are involved in ideas related to sustainable development, as well as their habits in relation to sustainable consumption. Full article

In the context of cultural tourism integration, tourists’ spatial perception intention is an important carrier of spatial evaluation. In historic cultural districts represented by Jinan Mingfu City, tourists’ perceptual depth remains underexplored, leading to a misalignment between cultural tourism development and spatial quality needs. Taking Jinan Mingfu City as a representative case of a historic cultural district, while the living heritage model has revitalized local economies, the absence of a tourist perspective has resulted in misalignment between cultural tourism development and spatial quality requirements. This study establishes a technical framework encompassing “data crawling-factor aggregation-human-machine collaborative optimization”. It integrates Python web crawlers, SnowNLP sentiment analysis, and TF-IDF text mining technologies to extract physical elements; constructs a three-dimensional evaluation framework of “visual perception-spatial comfort-cultural experience” through SPSS principal component analysis; and quantifies physical element indicators such as green vision rate and signboard clutter index through street view semantic segmentation (OneFormer framework). A synergistic mechanism of machine scoring and manual double-blind scoring is adopted for correlation analysis to determine the impact degree of indicators and optimization strategies. This study identified that indicators such as green vision rate, shading facility coverage, and street enclosure ratio significantly influence tourist evaluations, with a severe deficiency in cultural spaces. Accordingly, it proposes targeted strategies, including visual landscape optimization, facility layout adjustment, and cultural scenario implementation. By breaking away from traditional qualitative evaluation paradigms, this study provides data-based support for the spatial quality enhancement of historic districts, thereby enabling the transformation of these areas from experience-oriented protection to data-driven intelligent renewal and promoting the sustainable development of cultural tourism. The Seven Masters of the Quanzhen 全真七子 sect served as central figures during the founding phase of Quanzhen Daoism and played key roles in the sect’s early development. Originally positioned as the “Northern Seven Perfected Ones” (Bei Qi Zhen 北七真), they were instrumental in propelling the prosperity and expansion of Quanzhen Daoism. Over time, their images subsequently proliferated across various media—including portrayals in stone inscription, painting, biography, and novel, undergoing transformations through inscriptions, paintings, biographies, and novels—transforming transmission channels from Daoist temples to stage performances and from street corners to modern screens. In the Jin and Yuan 金元 periods, Daoist biographies and inscriptions portrayed the Seven Masters as exemplary figures of Daoist practice. In folk novels and precious scrolls (Baojuan 宝卷) in the Ming 明 and Qing 清 dynasties, they were presented as legendary, divine immortals and distant ancestors available for narrative appropriation. In modern times—particularly due to the popularity of Jin Yong 金庸’s martial art novels—they completed their universalization as Daoist cultural resources blending chivalric ethos and entertainment value. Examining the evolution of the Seven Masters’ imagery, two fundamental implications emerge: First, this transformation was jointly shaped by the power structures, functional needs, and media forms of each era. Second, beneath the fluid representations from sacred patriarchs of the Jin–Yuan period to modern entertainment symbols, there is an enduring thread of Daoist transcendental consciousness. This study investigates the Roman land division system, centuriation, using LIDAR data and historical data to understand the landscape during the Roman period, in this case between Roman cities such as Siscia and Andautonia. LIDAR data analysis provided evidence of the preservation of the Roman centuriation system in the present day Turopoljski Lug forest. The azimuth suggests that centuriation aligned with Siscia’s ager, while the precise territorial limits between the two agers remain unclear. Additionally, the orientation of Siscia’s streets and the alignment of modern roads like Zagrebačka street suggest continuity of the Roman road system. The research also sheds light on the agricultural nature of the region in the Roman period, challenging traditional views of Turopolje as a marshy, forested area from prehistoric periods. The presence of Roman-era drainage systems and the re-evaluation of the historical landscape indicate that the region was actively cultivated. The study also discusses the abandonment of the centuriation system after the Roman period and its subsequent transformation into forested land. Future research should focus on the exact borders between the agers of Siscia and Andautonia and the ongoing influence of Roman land division on later historical landscapes. Full article

The digital transformation of the railway industry is necessary for addressing growing challenges and advancing its sustainable development. Digital technologies include Automatic Train Operation (ATO) and Remote Train Control (RTC), which offer opportunities to potentially optimize operations and enhance safety. Both technologies, however, could pose significant challenges that need to be addressed in order to capture the anticipated benefits in an urban public street environment. This study thus bridges the gap between theory and practice by exploring the projected benefits and challenges of implementing RTC and ATO through a case study of a European public transport operator deploying these technologies in tramway operations. Employing a case study methodology, the research draws on 44 semi-structured interviews with stakeholders from the operator and its supplier. The findings highlight significant anticipated benefits, including increased productivity, improved safety, and enhanced sustainability. Yet, prospective challenges such as regulatory hurdles, technical complexities, and organizational changes pose barriers to implementation. Key obstacles include ensuring robust connectivity, addressing cybersecurity concerns, and managing workforce transitions. This study underscores the importance of collaborative approaches, stakeholder engagement, and incremental deployment to mitigate risks and maximize the impact of automation technologies. By providing actionable insights into the practical adoption of RTC and ATO, this research supports the development of advanced urban transport systems. Full article

While deep learning-based image matching methods excel at extracting high-level semantic features from remote sensing data, their performance degrades significantly under cross-daylight conditions and wide-baseline geometric distortions, particularly in multi-source street-view scenarios. This paper presents a novel illumination-invariant framework that synergistically integrates geometric topology and semantic consistency to achieve robust multi-view matching for cross-daylight urban perception. We first design a self-supervised learning paradigm to extract illumination-agnostic features by jointly optimizing local descriptors and global geometric structures across multi-view images. To address extreme perspective variations, a homography-aware transformation module is introduced to stabilize feature representation under large viewpoint changes. Leveraging a graph neural network with hierarchical attention mechanisms, our method dynamically aggregates contextual information from both local keypoints and semantic topology graphs, enabling precise matching in occluded regions and repetitive-textured urban scenes. A dual-branch learning strategy further refines similarity metrics through supervised patch alignment and unsupervised spatial consistency constraints derived from Delaunay triangulation. Finally, a topology-guided multi-plane expansion mechanism propagates initial matches by exploiting the inherent structural regularity of street scenes, effectively suppressing mismatches while expanding coverage. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework outperforms state-of-the-art methods, achieving a 6.4% improvement in matching accuracy and a 30.5% reduction in mismatches under cross-daylight conditions. These advancements establish a new benchmark for reliable multi-source image retrieval and localization in dynamic urban environments, with direct applications in autonomous driving systems and large-scale 3D city reconstruction. Air conditioning loads in power systems exhibit spatiotemporal heterogeneity across geographical regions, complicating accurate load forecasting. This study proposes a framework that integrates Deep Reinforcement Learning-guided DBSCAN (DRL-DBSCAN) clustering with a Graph Attention Network (GAT)-based Graph Neural Network to model spatial dependencies and temporal dynamics. Using meteorological features like temperature and humidity, the framework clusters geographical grids and applies GAT to capture spatial patterns. On a Pecan Street dataset of 25 households in Austin, the GAT with DRL-DBSCAN achieves a Test MSE of 0.0216 and MAE of 0.0884, outperforming K-Means (MSE: 0.0523, MAE: 0.1456), Hierarchical clustering (MSE: 0.0478, MAE: 0.1321), no-clustering (MSE: 0.0631, MAE: 0.1678), LSTM (MSE: 0.3259, MAE: 0.3442), Transformer (MSE: 0.6415, MAE: 0.4835), and MLP (MSE: 0.7269, MAE: 0.5240) baselines. This approach enhances forecasting accuracy for real-time grid management and energy efficiency in smart grids, though further refinement is needed for standardizing predicted load ranges. Digital tools, especially games, are increasingly important for enabling citizen participation in urban planning. Among these, Minecraft has been widely utilized to engage children, leveraging its virtual environment to represent geospatial data. However, systematic methods for collecting and analyzing player-generated data within Minecraft remain underexplored. Playful Participatory Planning System (P-PPS) framework that transforms player actions (e.g., building, removing, planting) within Minecraft, using OpenStreetMap (OSM) data to create game environments, back into geospatial data for analysis. The framework’s applicability was demonstrated through two case studies, one with 58 schoolchildren and 18 adults in Ireland. The results reveal that schoolchildren, while highly engaged, demonstrated a high density of actions within limited areas, suggesting a need for guidance on spatial distribution and ecological considerations. In contrast, adults prioritized the urban context and exhibited greater spatial consistency in their actions. Challenges emerged in managing online interactions, emphasizing the need for clear guidelines and moderation strategies. This research demonstrates the potential of Minecraft as a platform for participatory urban planning, exploring its use as a collaborative immersive mapping tool. Full article

This study focuses on the issue of visual sustainability of colors in commercial historical districts, taking the historical area of Xueshi Street–Wuzoufang Street in Suzhou, China as a case study. It explores how to balance modern commercial development with the protection of historical culture. Due to the impact of commercialization and the introduction of various immature protection policies, historical districts often face the dilemma of coexisting “color conflict” and “color poverty”. Traditional color protection methods are either overly subjective or excessively quantitative, making it difficult to balance scientific rigor and adaptability. Therefore, this study provides a detailed literature review, compares and selects current quantitative color research methods, and proposes a comprehensive color analysis framework based on ViT (Vision Transformer), the CIEDE2000 color difference model, and K-means clustering (V-C-K framework). Using this framework, we conducted an in-depth analysis of the color-harmony situation in the studied area, aiming to accurately identify color issues in the district and provide optimization strategies. The experimental results show that the commercial colors of the Xueshi Street–Wuzoufang Street historical district exhibit a clear phenomenon of polarization: some areas have colors that are overly bright, leading to visual conflict, while others have colors that are too dull, lacking vitality and energy; furthermore, some areas display a mix of both conditions. Based on this situation, we then compared the extracted negative colors to the prohibited colors in the mainstream Munsell color system’s urban-color management guidelines. We found that colors with “high lightness and high saturation”, which are strictly limited by traditional color criteria, are not necessarily disharmonious, while “low lightness and low saturation” colors that are not restricted may not guarantee harmony either and could exacerbate the area’s “dilapidated feeling”. In other words, traditional color-protection standards often emphasize the safety of “low saturation and low lightness” colors unilaterally, ignoring that they can also cause dullness and discordance in certain environments. Under the ΔE (color difference value) threshold framework, color recognition is relatively more sensitive, balancing the inclusivity of “vibrant” colors and the caution against “dull” colors. Based on the above experimental results, this study proposes the following recommendations: (1) use the ΔE00 threshold to control the commercial colors in the district, ensuring that the colors align with the historical atmosphere while possessing commercial vitality; (2) in protection practices, comprehensively utilize the ViT, CIEDE2000, and K-means quantitative methods (i.e., the V-C-K framework) to reduce subjective errors; (3) based on the above quantitative framework, while referencing the reasonable parts of existing protection guidelines, combine cooperative collaboration, cultural group color preference surveys, policy incentives, and continuous monitoring and feedback to construct an operable plan for the entire “recognition–analysis–control” process.
