Legumes are vital sources of protein, dietary fibre and nutrients, making them crucial for global food security and sustainable agriculture. However, their widespread acceptance and consumption are often limited by undesirable sensory characteristics, such as “a beany flavour”, bitterness or variable textures. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive understanding of the complex molecular mechanisms governing appearance, aroma, taste, flavour, texture and palatability in legumes, aiming to enhance their sensory appeal. This review highlights the transformative power of multi-omics approaches in dissecting these intricate biological pathways and facilitating the targeted enhancement of legume sensory qualities. By integrating data from genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics, the genetic and biochemical networks that directly dictate sensory perception can be comprehensively unveiled. The insights gained from these integrated multi-omics studies are proving instrumental in developing strategies for sensory enhancement. They enable the identification of key biomarkers for desirable traits, facilitating more efficient marker-assisted selection (MAS) and genomic selection (GS) in breeding programs. Furthermore, a molecular understanding of sensory pathways opens avenues for precise gene editing (e.g., using CRISPR-Cas9) to modify specific genes, reduce off-flavour compounds or optimise texture. Beyond genetic improvements, multi-omics data also inform the optimisation of post-harvest handling and processing methods (e.g., germination and fermentation) to enhance desirable sensory profiles and mitigate undesirable ones. This holistic approach, spanning from the genetic blueprint to the final sensory experience, will accelerate the development of new legume cultivars and products with enhanced palatability, thereby fostering increased consumption and ultimately contributing to healthier diets and more resilient food systems worldwide. This study assessed the presence, abundance, and characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in farmed Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and evaluated the efficacy of depuration in reducing MPs under laboratory-controlled and commercial conditions. Oysters cultivated in the Lima estuary (NW Portugal) were sampled in autumn and winter, along with adjacent surface water and sediment, to investigate potential contamination sources. MP concentrations in oysters varied temporally, with higher levels in October 2023 (0.48 ± 0.34 MPs g−1 ww) than in February 2024 (0.09 ± 0.07 MPs g−1 ww), while the environmental levels remained stable across dates. All MPs were fibres, predominantly transparent, followed by blue and black. Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed cellulose and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as dominant polymers in oysters and environmental samples. No clear correlation was found between MPs in oysters and surrounding compartments. Laboratory depuration reduced MPs by 78% within 48 h, highlighting its potential as a mitigation strategy. However, depuration was less effective under commercial conditions, possibly due to lower initial contamination levels. These findings suggest that oysters may act as a vector for human exposure to MPs via seafood consumption. While depuration shows promise in reducing contamination, further research is needed to optimise commercial protocols and enhance the safety of aquaculture products. Full article

Barley is a good source of dietary fibre, vitamins, and minerals. Moreover, it is a source of polyphenols, which recently have been studied for their antioxidant properties. Barley generally is not eaten in its raw form, and the necessary processing influences the polyphenol content. This study evaluated the content of polyphenol compounds and antioxidant activity before and after thermal treatment typical for that carried out in households (i.e., boiling and subsequent microwave heating). Six genetic materials of hull-less barley were chosen for this study. The results showed that all tested barley genotypes were good sources of polyphenols. The studied thermal processes led to certain reductions in polyphenol content. The antioxidant activity of soluble phenolic compounds and the effects of heat treatment, as analysed by Trolox equivalent antioxidant activity (TEAC) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay (DPPH) methods, differed. In the case of the DPPH method, the boiling and subsequent microwave heating indicated growth in antioxidant activity for almost all genotypes. When using the TEAC method, the results were not so clear, as the indicated activity both increased and declined. In the case of insoluble polyphenols, the antioxidant activity decreased for almost all genotypes regardless of the measurement method used. Full article

We developed a mathematical model to examine the scattering of radiation by a periodic structure of circular and elliptical microcavities formed in a planar optical waveguide. The waveguide simulates the behaviour of a 62.5/125 µm multimode optical fibre. The calculations focused on the intensity distribution of scattered light with a wavelength of 1310 nm along the periodic structure, i.e., along the side surface of the waveguide, as a function of the microcavity dimensions and their spatial arrangement within the waveguide core. The optimal geometrical parameters of the microstructure, ensuring the most uniform light scattering, were identified. The model is valid for multimode optical fibres containing strictly periodic structures of microcavities with spherical or elliptical cross-sections that scatter laser radiation in all directions. One potential application of such fibres is as light sources in medical probes for surgical procedures requiring additional illumination and uniform irradiation of affected tissues. Furthermore, the findings of this study offer significant potential for the development of sensing elements for fibre-optic sensors. The findings of this study will facilitate the design of scattering structures with microcavities that ensure a highly uniform scattering pattern. Full article

Accurate and transparent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) datasets are essential for reliable sustainability evaluations, particularly in the complex and varied textile industry. Historically, the ecoinvent database has been a foundational source for LCA studies in the textile sector. This paper critically examines the limitations of the ecoinvent v3.7 dataset, which is widely used in academic research, industry tools, and policymaking. While newer versions, such as v3.11, released in 2024, have addressed many issues, including enhanced geographical representation and updated emission profiles for chemicals, this study emphasises the historical implications of earlier data versions. By comparing the cradle-to-gate Global Warming Potential (GWP) of wool and polyester jumpers, this research reveals how aggregated and outdated data underestimated the polyester’s environmental impact while overestimating that of wool. These discrepancies have shaped fibre certification, eco-labelling, and consumer perceptions for years. Understanding the legacy of these datasets is vital for re-evaluating past LCA-based decisions and guiding future assessments toward greater regional relevance and transparency. Full article

Three purple prairie clover (PPC; Dalea purpurea Vent.) varieties, namely Common seed (CS), AC Lamour (ACL) and Bismarck (BIS), were established in plots of irrigated land (rain-fed plus irrigation, Lethbridge, AB) and dryland (rain-fed only, Swift Current, SK) to assess its agronomic characteristics and nutritive value under different ecoclimate and growing conditions in Western Canada. Each seed source was replicated in four test plots arranged as a randomized complete block design at each experimental site. Forage mass on dry matter (DM) basis, canopy height, proportions of leaf and stem and nutritive value were determined at vegetative (VEG), full flower (FF) and late flower (LF) phenological stages. The forage masses of the three PPC varieties were similar (p < 0.05) at each phenological stage with the mean values for VFG, FF and LF being 4739, 4988 and 6753 kg DM/ha under the Lethbridge irrigated conditions, and 1423, 2014 and 2297 kg DM/ha under the Swift Current dryland conditions. The forage mass was higher (p < 0.001) under Lethbridge irrigation than under Swift Current dryland conditions and increased (p < 0.05) with maturity. The three varieties had similar concentrations of organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and crude protein (CP) and in vitro DM digestibility (DMD) at each phenological stage, but CP concentration and in vitro DMD decreased (p < 0.001) whilst NDF and ADF concentration increased (p < 0.001) with maturity. Purple prairie clover grown at Lethbridge irrigated land had higher (p < 0.001) DMD, OM and CP, but lower (p < 0.001) NDF, ADF and condensed tannin concentrations than that grown at Swift Current dryland conditions. These results indicate that PPC has great potential as an alternative legume forage for the cattle industry. Full article

Rivers are recognized as significant pathways and transportation for microplastics (MPs), an emerging contaminant, to aquatic environments. However, there is limited evidence on how riverine reservoirs influence MPs transport. To fill this gap and provide baseline empirical data and insights to South African context, the current study assessed the seasonal variation in MP densities from sediments collected upstream, within the reservoir, and downstream of the Vondo Reservoir along the Mutshindudi River. We hypothesised that MP densities would be highest within the reservoir, due to the lack of constant flow that would otherwise transport accumulated particles downriver. Additionally, we expected the cool–dry season to be associated with the highest MP densities. As expected, high MP densities were observed within the reservoir (117.38–277.46 particles kg−1 dwt) when compared to the downstream (72.63–141.50 particles kg−1 dwt) and upstream (28.81–91.63 particles kg−1 dwt) sites of the reservoir. The cool–dry season (91.63–277.46 particles kg−1 dwt) exhibited the highest MP densities compared to the hot–wet season (28.81–141.50 particles kg−1 dwt). However, MP densities downstream the reservoir were higher during the hot–wet season (141.50 ± 24.34 particles kg−1 dwt) compared to the cool–dry season (72.63 ± 48.85 particles kg−1 dwt). The most dominant MP particles identified were white, transparent, and black fibres/filaments composed primarily of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE). This suggests diverse sources of MP particles. No significant correlations were found between water parameters and MP densities across sampling sites and seasons, indicating a widespread and context-independent presence of MPs. These findings contribute to MP studies in freshwater environments and further reinforce the role of sediments as sink for MPs and suggest that riverine reservoirs similar to dams can trap MPs, which may then be remobilized downstream during high-flow periods. Importantly, the results of this study can support local municipalities in implementing targeted plastic pollution mitigation strategies and public awareness campaigns, particularly because the Vondo Reservoir serves as a critical water resource for surrounding communities. Industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is gaining renewed interest as a sustainable source of natural fibres, particularly in regions like Belgium, where well-established flax processing infrastructure exists. However, region-specific data on varietal performance for long fibre production remain limited, hindering large scale adoption by both farmers and processors. This study aimed to assess the agronomic performance of early- and late-flowering hemp varieties under temperate maritime conditions through a three-year field trial at two sites in Flanders (Belgium). The evaluation focused on key parameters including emergence rate, plant morphology, long fibre yield and quality. Results showed that successful crop establishment is critical, as poor emergence influenced stem diameter (increasing with decreasing emergence) and leads to reduced long fibre yields by up to 50% between tested sites. Significant yield differences between trial years were present at both sites, with the biomass yield ranging from 10.7 to 14.5 and from 7.8 to 9.6 t ha−1 for Bottelare and Beitem, respectively. Under favourable conditions, long fibre yields reached up to 2.4 t ha−1 for late-flowering and 2.1 t ha−1 for early- and mid-late-flowering varieties. In Western Europe, early to mid-late flowering varieties are generally favoured. Among these, the mid-late flowering variety Bialobrzeskie demonstrated strong yield potential. Overall, fibre quality across varieties was comparable to that of flax. Full article

Background: Kölliker’s organ (KO), a transient structure in the cochlea, plays a critical role in the auditory maturation of mammals, particularly during embryonic and early postnatal development. This organ is essential for the proper differentiation and function of cochlear cells, acting as a pivotal source of signalling molecules that influence hair cell development and synaptic connectivity. Methods: This study systematically analyses the literature according to the PRISMA statement in order to evaluate the function roles of KO during cochlea development, reporting the molecular mechanisms and signalling pathways involved. Results: From our study, it emerged that KO supporting cells release adenosine triphosphate (ATP) through connexin hemichannels, initiating a cascade of intracellular calcium (Ca2+) signalling in adjacent inner hair cells (IHCs). This signalling promotes the release of glutamate, facilitating synaptic excitation of afferent nerve fibres and enhancing auditory neuron maturation prior to the onset of hearing. Additionally, the spontaneous electrical activity generated within KO supports the establishment of essential neural connections in the auditory pathway. The dynamic interplay between ATP release, Ca2+ signalling, and morphological changes in KO is crucial for cochlear compartmentalisation and fluid regulation, contributing to the formation of endolymph and perilymph. Furthermore, KO supports cellular plasticity and may provide a reservoir of precursor cells capable of trans-differentiating into hair cells under specific conditions. Conclusions: Dysregulation of KO function or delayed degeneration of its supporting cells has been implicated in auditory disorders, underscoring the importance of this organ in normal cochlear development and auditory function. Despite its identification over a century ago, further investigation is necessary to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying KO’s contributions to auditory maturation, particularly in human physiology. This review highlights the latest research on dietary fibre (DF) applications in meat and meat analogues, providing insights into their role in shaping future food innovations. DFs provide significant long-term health benefits, such as better gut health, lower cholesterol levels, and possible protection from metabolic diseases. They also enhance the texture, juiciness, and overall quality of plant-based meat alternatives (PMAs) and traditional meat products. Among the most effective fibres, cereal-derived fibres, fruit- and vegetable-derived fibres, and legume-based fibres have been shown to improve water-holding capacity (WHC) and emulsification properties, enhancing mouthfeel and juiciness. New processing methods, such as enzymatic hydrolysis and extrusion, can change how fibres work. By combining various fibre sources with innovative processing methods, the food industry can create meat and PMA products that are not only healthier but also tastier and more sustainable. Lignin, one of the most abundant biopolymers on Earth, holds significant promise as a feedstock for applications such as resins, biofuels, foams, and carbon fibres. However, despite extensive research, lignin remains largely underutilised, with its primary use limited to combustion for energy. While lignin’s structural features are well documented, there is a lack of consistent data on its key physical properties such as density. This study addresses that gap by providing experimentally determined values for skeletal and bulk densities of lignins obtained through different extraction methods, including Kraft; soda pulping; and particularly the ionoSolv process, using ionic liquids such as N,N-dimethyl butyl ammonium hydrogen sulphate ([DMBA][HSO4]). The results reveal correlations between lignin chemical structure and density in ionoSolv-extracted lignins from Eucalyptus Red Grandis, suggesting opportunities to tune the extraction parameters for targeted material properties. The skeletal density of the lignin samples ranged from 1.3370 to 1.4598 g/cm3, while the bulk density varied more widely—from 0.0944 to 0.5302 g/cm3—reflecting significant differences in particle packing and porosity depending on the biomass source and extraction method. These findings contribute valuable data for process design and scale-up, advancing the commercial viability of lignin-based products. Full article

Microorganisms metabolising low-value carbon sources can produce a diverse range of bio-based and biodegradable materials compatible with circular economy principles. One such material is bacterial cellulose (BC), which can be obtained in high purity through the fermentation of sweetened tea by a Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY). In recent years, there has been a growing research interest in SCOBYs as a promising solution for sustainable material design. In this work, we have explored a novel method to grow SCOBYs vertically using a waste-based scaffold system. Waste sheep wool and cotton fabric were soaked in a SCOBY infusion to serve as scaffolds, carrying the infusion and facilitating vertical growth through capillary forces. Remarkably, vertical membrane growth up to 5 cm above the liquid–air interface (LAI) was observed after just one week. Membranes with different microstructures were found in sheep wool and cotton, randomly oriented between the scaffold fibre, resulting in a high surface area. Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) processing generates significant byproducts, with seeds emerging as a promising resource due to their rich content of oils, proteins, phenolic compounds and minerals. This comprehensive review critically evaluates the existing literature on the characterization of pepper seeds, highlighting their significant nutritional value and diverse bioactive constituents. The substantial oil content, characterized by a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, such as linoleic and oleic acids, positions pepper seeds as a valuable source for edible oil and potential biofuel production. In addition, the presence of significant amounts of proteins, carbohydrates, dietary fibre and essential amino acids underlines their potential for the development of functional foods and dietary supplements. The current review also summarizes the findings on the phenolic profile and antioxidant activities of pepper seeds, indicating their relevance for nutraceutical and cosmetic applications. Finally, the potential utilization of pepper seeds in various agri-food industrial applications, such as food condiments, biostimulants, and biomass for energy, is discussed, promoting sustainability and a circular bioeconomy approach to valorise this underutilized resource. This systematic review summarizes current knowledge, identifies knowledge gaps, and highlights the potential of pepper seeds as a sustainable and economically viable alternative in multiple sectors. There is a sizeable amount of sawdust produced from wood industries such as timber and furniture. In the past, sawdust has been utilized as a fuel source and in the manufacturing of furniture. Based on the limited use of sawdust, there is plenty of sawdust accessible from the industries. Sawdust is the material of choice due to its cost effectiveness, environmental friendliness, and biodegradability. However, if sawdust is not appropriately disposed or utilized better, it may have negative impact on the aquatic life and organic products. Hence, this review paper discusses the best possible methods or proper routes for the utilization of sawdust to benefit the environment, society, and the economy at large. Sawdust possesses superior capabilities as a reinforcing filler in various polymer matrices for advanced applications. This paper provides an in-depth discussion on sawdust hybrid composites in comparison to other natural fibres hybrid composites. The applications of various sawdust hybrid polymer composites for specific systems are also mentioned. Furthermore, the morphology and preparation of the sawdust/polymer composites and/or sawdust hybrid polymers composites are also discussed since it is well known that the properties of the natural fibre composites are affected by the preparation method and the resultant morphology. Based on the above, the current paper also plays a critical role in providing more information about waste to value added products. Full article

High-Performance NIR Laser-Beam Shaping and Materials Processing at 350 W with a Spatial Light Modulator

Shaping or splitting of a Gaussian beam is often desired to optimise laser–material interactions, improving throughput and quality. This can be achieved holographically using liquid crystal-on-silicon spatial light modulators (LC-SLMs). Until recently, maximum exposure has been limited to circa 120 W average power with a Gaussian profile, restricting potential applications due to the non-linear (NL) phase response of the liquid crystal above this threshold. In this study, we present experimental tests of a new SLM device, demonstrating high first-order diffraction efficiency of η = 0.98 ± 0.01 at 300 W average power and a phase range Δφ > 2π at P = 383 W, an exceptional performance. The numerically calculated device temperature response with power closely matches that measured, supporting the higher power-handling capability. Surface modification of mild steel and molybdenum up to P = 350 W exposure is demonstrated when employing a single-mode (SM) fibre laser source. Exposure on mild steel with a vortex beam (m = +6) displays numerous ringed regions with varying micro-structures and clear elemental separation created by the radial heat flow. On molybdenum, with multi-spot Gaussian exposure, both MoO3 films and recrystallisation rings were observed, exposure-dependent. The step change in device capability will accelerate new applications for this LC-SLM in both subtractive and additive manufacturing. Full article
