Urban rail transit networks’ rapid expansions have led to increasing intersections between existing and new lines, particularly in dense urban areas where new stations must underpass existing infrastructure at zero distance. Deformation controls during construction are critical for maintaining the operational safety of existing stations, especially in soft soil conditions where construction-induced settlement poses significant risks to structural integrity. This study systematically investigates the influence mechanisms of different construction schemes on base plate deformation when an open-top UBIT (underground bundle composite pipe integrated by transverse pre-stressing) underpasses existing stations. Through precise numerical simulation using PLAXIS 3D, the research comparatively analyzed the effects of 12 pipe jacking sequences, 3 pre-stress levels (1116 MPa, 1395 MPa, 1674 MPa), and 3 soil chamber excavation schemes, revealing the mechanisms between the deformation evolution and soil unloading effects. The continuous jacking strategy of adjacent pipes forms an efficient support structure, limiting maximum settlement to 5.2 mm. Medium pre-stress level (1395 MPa) produces a balanced deformation pattern that optimizes structural performance, while excavating side chambers before the central chamber effectively utilizes soil unloading effects, achieving controlled settlement distribution with maximum values of −7.2 mm. The optimal construction combination demonstrates effective deformation control, ensuring the operational safety of existing station structures. These findings enable safer and more efficient urban underpassing construction. Full article

The safety of lithium-ion batteries during transportation is critically important. However, current standards exhibit limitations, as their environmental testing parameter thresholds fail to fully encompass actual transportation conditions. To enhance both safety and standard applicability, in this study, we focused on four representative environmental conditions: temperature, vibration, shock, and low atmospheric pressure. Field measurements were conducted across road, rail, and air transport modes using a self-developed data acquisition system based on the NearLink communication technology. The measured data were then compared with the threshold values defined in current international and national standards. The results reveal that certain measured values exceeded the upper limits prescribed by existing standards, indicating limitations in their applicability under extreme transport conditions. Based on these findings, we propose revised testing parameters that better reflect actual transport risks, including a temperature cycling range of 72 ± 2 °C (high) and −40 ± 2 °C (low), a shock acceleration limit of 50 gn, adjusted peak frequencies in the vibration PSD profile, and a minimum pressure threshold of 11.6 kPa. These results provide a scientific basis for optimising safety standards and improving the safety of lithium-ion battery transportation. Full article

UAV-based inspections are an effective way to ensure railway safety and have gained significant attention. However, images captured during complex weather conditions, such as rain, snow, or fog, often suffer from severe degradation, affecting image recognition accuracy. Existing algorithms for removing rain, snow, and fog have two main limitations: they do not adaptively learn features under varying weather complexities and struggle with managing complex noise patterns in drone inspections, leading to incomplete noise removal. To address these challenges, this study proposes a novel framework for removing rain, snow, and fog from drone images, called WeatherClean. This framework introduces a Weather Complexity Adjustment Factor (WCAF) in a parameterized adjustable network architecture to process weather degradation of varying degrees adaptively. It also employs a hierarchical multi-scale cropping strategy to enhance the recovery of fine noise and edge structures. Additionally, it incorporates a degradation synthesis method based on atmospheric scattering physical models to generate training samples that align with real-world weather patterns, thereby mitigating data scarcity issues. Experimental results show that WeatherClean outperforms existing methods by effectively removing noise particles while preserving image details. This advancement provides more reliable high-definition visual references for drone-based railway inspections, significantly enhancing inspection capabilities under complex weather conditions and ensuring the safety of railway operations. Unbalanced accelerations occurring during tram travel have a significant impact on passenger comfort and safety, as well as on the rate of wear and tear on infrastructure and rolling stock. Ideally, these dynamic forces should be monitored continuously in real-time; however, traditional systems require high-precision accelerometers and proprietary software—investments often beyond the reach of municipally funded tram operators. To this end, as part of the research project “Accelerometer Measurements in Rail Passenger Transport Vehicles”, pilot measurement campaigns were conducted in Poland on tram lines in Gdańsk, Toruń, Bydgoszcz, and Olsztyn. Off-the-shelf smartphones equipped with MEMS accelerometers and GPS modules, running the Physics Toolbox Sensor Suite Pro app, were used. Although the research employs widely known methods, this paper addresses part of the gap in affordable real-time monitoring by demonstrating that, in the future, equipment equipped solely with consumer-grade MEMS accelerometers can deliver sufficiently accurate data in applications where high precision is not critical. This paper presents an analysis of a subset of results from the Gdańsk tram network. Lateral (x) and vertical (z) accelerations were recorded at three fixed points inside two tram models (Pesa 128NG Jazz Duo and Düwag N8C), while longitudinal accelerations were deliberately omitted at this stage due to their strong dependence on driver behavior. Raw data were exported as CSV files, processed and analyzed in R version 4.2.2, and then mapped spatially using ArcGIS cartograms. Vehicle speed was calculated both via the haversine formula—accounting for Earth’s curvature—and via a Cartesian approximation. Over the ~7 km route, both methods yielded virtually identical results, validating the simpler approach for short distances. Acceleration histograms approximated Gaussian distributions, with most values between 0.05 and 0.15 m/s2, and extreme values approaching 1 m/s2. The results demonstrate that low-cost mobile devices, after future calibration against certified accelerometers, can provide sufficiently rich data for ride-comfort assessment and show promise for cost-effective condition monitoring of both track and rolling stock. Future work will focus on optimizing the app’s data collection pipeline, refining standard-based analysis algorithms, and validating smartphone measurements against benchmark sensors. Full article

High-speed trains have revolutionized modern transportation with their exceptional speeds, yet the essence of this technological breakthrough resides in the train’s wheels. These components are engineered to endure extreme mechanical stresses while ensuring high safety and reliability. In this paper, we selected the rim and web as representative components of the wheel and conducted a comprehensive and systematic study on their microstructure and mechanical properties. The wheels are typically produced through integral forging. To improve the mechanical performance of the wheel/rail contact surface (i.e., the tread), the rim is subjected to surface quenching or other heat treatments. This endows the rim with strength and hardness second only to the tread and lowers its ductility. This results in a more isotropic structure with improved fatigue resistance in low-cycle and high-cycle regimes under rotating bending. The web connects the wheel axle to the rim and retains the microstructure formed during the forging process. Its strength is lower than that of the rim, while its ductility is slightly better. The web satisfies current property standards, although the microstructure suggests further optimization may be achievable through heat treatment refinement. Full article

To investigate how severe wear at No. 12 turnout frogs in an urban rail transit line operating at speeds over 120 km/h on the dynamic performance of the vehicle, a vehicle–frog coupled dynamic model was established by employing the 2021 version of SIMPACK software. Profiles of No. 12 alloy steel frogs and metro wheel rims were measured to simulate wheel–rail interactions as the vehicle traverses the turnout, using both brand-new and worn frog conditions. The experimental results indicate that increased service life deepens frog wear, raises equivalent conicity, and intensifies wheel–rail forces. When a vehicle passes through the frog serviced for over 17 months at the speed of 120 km/h, the maximum derailment coefficient, lateral acceleration of the car body, and lateral and vertical wheel–rail forces increased by 0.14, 0.17 m/s2, 9.52 kN, and 105.76 kN, respectively. The maximum contact patch area grew by 35.73%, while peak contact pressure rose by 236 MPa. To prevent dynamic indicators from exceeding safety thresholds and ensure train operational safety, it is recommended that the frog maintenance cycle be limited to 12 to 16 months. Full article

A wheel flat is the most common fault of a railway freight car, a type of complex transport equipment. A wheel flat will cause continuous regular impact on the rail, damage the rail and the railway structure, affecting the safety and stability of rail transport. This article studied the relationship between wheel flats and wheel–rail impacts using multi-body dynamics simulation through SIMPACK and, through a field test, validates the detection of a flat wheel. The results show that using the simulation method can obtain similar data to the measured wheel–rail force in the wayside detection device. The simulation data show that the data collected by 14 shear vertical force acquisition channels can completely cover the wheel surface of the heavy-duty railway 840 mm diameter wheel. According to the flat length-speed-impact diagram, the mapping relationship can be fitted using polynomial regression. Based on the measured wheel–rail impact forces, the size of wheel flats can then be deduced from this established mapping relationship. Through a field test, the detection method has been validated. Due to the long operation period of Beijing Metro Line 2 and the complex surrounding building environment, this paper comprehensively studied the mechanical properties of new tunnels using close-fitting undercrossing based on pre-support technology. To control structural deformation caused by the expansion project, methods such as laboratory tests, numerical simulation, and field tests were adopted to systematically analyze the tunnel mechanics during the undercrossing of existing metro lines. First, field tests were carried out on the existing Line 2 and Line 3 tunnels during the construction period. It was found that the close-fitting construction based on pre-support technology caused small deformation displacement in the subway tunnels, with little impact on the smoothness of the existing subway rail surface. The fluctuation range was −1 to 1 mm, ensuring the safety of existing subway operations. Then, a refined finite difference model for the close-fitting undercrossing construction process based on pre-support technology was established, and a series of field and laboratory tests were conducted to obtain calculation parameters. The reliability of the numerical model was verified by comparing the monitored deformation of existing structures with the simulated structural forces and deformations. The influence of construction methods on the settlement changes of existing line tracks, structures, and deformation joints was discussed. The research results show that this construction method effectively controls the settlement deformation of existing lines. The settlement deformation of existing lines is controlled within 1~3 cm. The deformation stress of the existing lines is within the concrete strength range of the existing structure, and the tensile stress is less than 3 MPa. The maximum settlement and maximum tensile stress of the station in the pre-support jacking scheme are −5.27 mm and 2.29 MPa. The construction scheme with pre-support can more significantly control structural deformation, reduce stress variations in existing line structures, and minimize damage to concrete structures. Based on the monitoring data and simulation results, some optimization measures were proposed. Full article

The safe transport of cylindrical loads such as metal, paper, or polymer rollers requires specialized securing structures that address the complex dynamic forces encountered during rail movement. This paper presents a structured methodology for the design and verification of such securing systems, combining theoretical analysis, standardized load models, and numerical simulations. The method includes load calculations based on EN 12195-1:2010, EN 15551, and Eurocode 1, and validation through finite element modeling in Ansys Workbench. The proposed structure ensures stability under static and dynamic loads, including acceleration, braking, turning, and wind forces, while optimizing wagon space utilization. Simulation results confirm that the design meets strength and safety criteria without exceeding material stress limits, offering a reliable solution for the secure transport of cylindrical rollers. Improving the Freight Transportation System in the Context of the Country’s Economic Development

Due to the recent significant increase in the scale of both domestic and international cargo transportation, the transport sector is becoming an important factor in the country’s economic development. This implies the need to improve all links in the cargo transportation chain. A key role in it is played by logistics centers, which in their activities must meet both state (CO2 emissions, reduction in road load, increase in transportation safety, etc.) and commercial (cargo transportation in the shortest time and at the lowest cost) requirements. The objective of the paper is freight transportation from China to European countries, reflecting issues of CO2 emissions, reduction in road load, and increase in transportation safety. Transport operations from the manufacturer to the logistics center are especially important in this chain, since the efficiency of transportation largely depends on the decisions made by its employees. They select the appropriate types of transport (air, sea, rail, and road transport) and routes for a specific situation. In methodology, the analyzed problem can be presented as a dynamic multi-criteria decision model. It is assumed that the decision-maker—the manager responsible for planning transportation operations—is interested in achieving three basic goals: financial goal minimizing total delivery costs from factories to the logistics center, environmental goal minimizing the negative impact of supply chain operations on the environment, and high level of customer service goal minimizing delivery times from factories to the logistics center. The proposed methodology allows one to reduce the total carbon dioxide emission by 1.1 percent and the average duration of cargo transportation by 1.47 percent. On the other hand, the total cost of their delivery increases by 1.25 percent. By combining these, it is possible to create optimal transportation options, effectively use vehicles, reduce air pollution, and increase the quality of customer service. All this would significantly contribute to the country’s socio-economic development. It is proposed to solve this complex problem based on a dynamic multi-criteria model. In this paper, the problem of constructing a schedule of transport operations from factories to a logistics center is considered. The analyzed problem can be presented as a dynamic multi-criteria decision model. Linear programming and the AHP method were used to solve it. Full article

From the point of view of the intelligent operation and maintenance of high-speed train tracks, this paper examines the research status of high-speed train rail damage detection technology in the field of high-speed train track operation and maintenance detection in recent years, summarizes the damage detection methods for high-speed trains, and compares and analyzes different detection technologies and application research results. The analysis results show that the detection methods for high-speed train rail damage mainly focus on the research and application of non-destructive testing technology and methods, as well as testing platform equipment. Detection platforms and equipment include a new type of vortex meter, integrated track recording vehicles, laser rangefinders, thermal sensors, laser vision systems, LiDAR, new ultrasonic detectors, rail detection vehicles, rail detection robots, laser on-board rail detection systems, track recorders, self-moving trolleys, etc. The main research and application methods include electromagnetic detection, optical detection, ultrasonic guided wave detection, acoustic emission detection, ray detection, vortex detection, and vibration detection. In recent years, the most widely studied and applied methods have been rail detection based on LiDAR detection, ultrasonic detection, eddy current detection, and optical detection. The most important optical detection method is machine vision detection. Ultrasonic detection can detect internal damage of the rail. LiDAR detection can detect dirt around the rail and the surface, but the cost of this kind of equipment is very high. And the application cost is also very high. In the future, for high-speed railway rail damage detection, the damage standards must be followed first. In terms of rail geometric parameters, the domestic standard (TB 10754-2018) requires a gauge deviation of ±1 mm, a track direction deviation of 0.3 mm/10 m, and a height deviation of 0.5 mm/10 m, and some indicators are stricter than European standard EN-13848. In terms of damage detection, domestic flaw detection vehicles have achieved millimeter-level accuracy in crack detection in rail heads, rail waists, and other parts, with a damage detection rate of over 85%. The accuracy of identifying track components by the drone detection system is 93.6%, and the identification rate of potential safety hazards is 81.8%. There is a certain gap with international standards, and standards such as EN 13848 have stricter requirements for testing cycles and data storage, especially in quantifying damage detection requirements, real-time damage data, and safety, which will be the key research and development contents and directions in the future. With China’s high-speed rail network undergoing rapid expansion, turnouts constitute critical elements whose safety and stability are essential to railway operation. At present, the efficiency of wheel–rail force safety monitoring conducted in the small hours reserved for the construction and maintenance of operating lines without marking train operation lines is relatively low. To enhance the efficiency of turnout safety monitoring, in this study, a three-dimensional BIM model of the No. 42 turnout was established and a corresponding wheel–rail force monitoring scheme was devised. Collision detection for monitoring equipment placement and construction process simulation was conducted using Navisworks, such that the rationality of cable routing and the precision of construction sequence alignment were improved. A train wheel–rail force analysis program was developed in MATLAB R2022b to perform signal filtering, and static calibration was applied to calculate key safety evaluation indices—namely, the coefficient of derailment and the rate of wheel load reduction—which were subsequently analyzed. The safety of the No. 42 turnout and the effectiveness of the proposed monitoring scheme were validated, theoretical support was provided for train operational safety and turnout maintenance, and technical guidance was offered for whole-life-cycle management and green, sustainable development of railway infrastructure. However, conventional defect detection techniques typically rely on extensive labeled datasets, struggle with class imbalance, and often fail to capture large-scale structural anomalies. In this paper, we present an unsupervised insulator defect detection framework based on a masked autoencoder (MAE) architecture. Built upon a vision transformer (ViT), the model employs an asymmetric encoder-decoder structure and leverages a high-ratio random masking scheme during training to facilitate robust representation learning. At inference, a dual-pass interval masking strategy enhances defect localization accuracy. Benchmark experiments across multiple datasets demonstrate that our method delivers competitive image- and pixel-level performance while significantly reducing computational overhead compared to existing ViT-based approaches. By enabling high-precision defect detection through image reconstruction without requiring manual annotations, this approach offers a scalable and efficient solution for real-time industrial inspection under limited supervision. Wheel polygonal wear of metro deteriorates the vibration environment of the vehicle system, potentially leading to resonance-induced fatigue failure of components. This poses serious risks to operational safety and increases maintenance costs. To address the adverse effects of wheel polygonal wear, dynamic tracking tests and numerical simulations were conducted. The modal analysis focused on the vehicle–track coupling system, incorporating various track structures to explore the formation mechanisms and key influencing factors of polygonization. Test results revealed dominant polygonal wear patterns of the seventh to ninth order, inducing forced vibrations in the 50–70 Hz frequency range. These frequencies closely match the P2 resonance frequency generated by wheel–rail interaction. When vehicle–track coupling is considered, the track’s frequency response shows multiple peaks within this range, indicating susceptibility to resonance excitation. Additionally, rail joint irregularities act as geometric excitation sources that trigger polygonal development, while the P2 force resonance mode plays a critical role in its amplification. With the rapid expansion of railway networks and increasing operational complexity, intelligent rail damage detection has become crucial for ensuring safety and improving maintenance efficiency. Traditional physical inspection methods (e.g., ultrasonic testing, magnetic flux leakage) are limited in terms of efficiency and environmental adaptability. This study proposes a machine vision-based approach leveraging deep learning to identify four primary types of rail damages: corrugations, spalls, cracks, and scratches. A self-developed acquisition device collected 298 field images from the Chongqing Metro system, which were expanded into 1556 samples through data augmentation techniques (including rotation, translation, shearing, and mirroring). This study systematically evaluated three object detection models—YOLOv8, SSD, and Faster R-CNN—in terms of detection accuracy (mAP), missed detection rate (mAR), and training efficiency. The results indicate that YOLOv8 outperformed the other models, achieving an mAP of 0.79, an mAR of 0.69, and a shortest training time of 0.28 h. To further enhance performance, this study integrated the Multi-Head Self-Attention (MHSA) module into YOLO, creating MHSA-YOLOv8. The optimized model achieved a significant improvement in mAP by 10% (to 0.89), increased mAR by 20%, and reduced training time by 50% (to 0.14 h). These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of MHSA-YOLO for accurate and efficient rail damage detection in complex environments, offering a robust solution for intelligent railway maintenance.
