Landslide susceptibility modelling represents an efficient approach to enhance disaster management and mitigation strategies. The focus of this paper lies in the development of a landslide susceptibility evaluation in northwestern Tunisia using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approaches. The used database covers 286 landslides, including ten landslide factor maps: rainfall, slope, aspect, topographic roughness index, lithology, land use and land cover, distance from streams, drainage density, lineament density, and distance from roads. The AHP and ANN approaches were applied to classify the factors by analyzing the correlation relationship between landslide distribution and the significance of associated factors. The Landslide Susceptibility Index result reveals five susceptible zones organized from very low to very high risk, where the zones with the highest risks are associated with the combination of extreme amounts of rainfall and steep slope. The performance of the models was confirmed utilizing the area under the Relative Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves. The computed ROC curve (AUC) values (0.720 for ANN and 0.651 for AHP) convey the advantage of the ANN method compared to the AHP method. The overlay of the landslide inventory data locations of historical landslides and susceptibility maps shows the concordance of the results, which is in favor of the established model reliability. Accurate side road detection is essential for traffic management, urban planning, and vehicle navigation. However, existing research mainly focuses on road network construction, lane extraction, and intersection identification, while fine-grained side road detection remains underexplored. Therefore, this study proposes a road segment-level side road detection method based on crowdsourced trajectory data: First, considering the geometric and dynamic characteristics of trajectories, SRDet introduces a trajectory lane-change pattern recognition method based on mutation intervals to distinguish the heterogeneity of lane-change behaviors between main and side roads. Secondly, combining geometric features with spatial statistical theory, SRDet constructs multimodal features for trajectories and road segments, and proposes a potential side road segment classification model based on random forests to achieve precise detection of side road segments. Finally, based on mutation intervals and potential side road segments, SRDet utilizes density peak clustering to identify main and side road access points, completing the fitting of side roads. Experiments were conducted using 2021 Beijing trajectory data. The results show that SRDet achieves precision and recall rates of 84.6% and 86.8%, respectively. This demonstrates the superior performance of SRDet in side road detection across different areas, providing support for the precise updating of urban road navigation information. Full article

Traffic conditions are a key factor in our society, contributing to quality of life and the economy, as well as access to professional, educational, and health resources. This emphasizes the need for a reliable road network to facilitate traffic fluidity across the nation and improve mobility. Reaching these characteristics demands good traffic volume prediction methods, not only in the short term but also in the long term, which helps design transportation strategies and road planning. However, most of the research has focused on short-term prediction, applied mostly to short-trip distances, while effective long-term forecasting, which has become a challenging issue in recent years, is lacking. The team proposes a traffic prediction method that leverages K-means clustering, long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network, and Fourier transform (FT) for long-term traffic prediction. The proposed method was evaluated on a real-world dataset from the U.S. Travel Monitoring Analysis System (TMAS) database, which enhances practical relevance and potential impact on transportation planning and management. The forecasting performance is evaluated with real-world traffic flow data in the state of California, in the western USA. Results show good forecasting accuracy on traffic trends and counts over a one-year period, capturing periodicity and variation. Full article

Xylosalsola chiwensis (Popov) Akhani & Roalson is listed in the Red Data Book of Kazakhstan as a rare species with a limited distribution, occurring in small populations in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The aim of this study is to deepen the understanding of the ecological conditions of its habitats, the floristic composition of its associated plant communities, the species’ morphological and anatomical characteristics, and its molecular phylogeny, as well as to identify the main threats to its survival. The ecological conditions of the X. chiwensis habitats include coastal sandy plains and the slopes of chinks and denudation plains with gray–brown desert soils and bozyngens on the Mangyshlak Peninsula and the Ustyurt Plateau at altitudes ranging from −3 to 270 m above sea level. The species is capable of surviving in arid conditions (less than 100 mm of annual precipitation) and under extreme temperatures (air temperatures exceeding 45 °C and soil surface temperatures above 65 °C). In X. chiwensis communities, we recorded 53 species of vascular plants. Anthropogenic factors associated with livestock grazing, industrial disturbances, and off-road vehicle traffic along an unregulated network of dirt roads have been identified as contributing to population decline and the potential extinction of the species under conditions of unsustainable land use. The morphometric traits of X. chiwensis could be used for taxonomic analysis and for identifying diagnostic morphological characteristics to distinguish between species of Xylosalsola. The most taxonomically valuable characteristics include the fruit diameter (with wings) and the cone-shaped structure length, as they differ consistently between species and exhibit relatively low variability. Anatomical adaptations to arid conditions were observed, including a well-developed hypodermis, which is indicative of a water-conserving strategy. The moderate photosynthetic activity, reflected by a thinner palisade mesophyll layer, may be associated with reduced photosynthetic intensity, which is compensated for through structural mechanisms for water conservation. The flow cytometry analysis revealed a genome size of 2.483 ± 0.191 pg (2n/4x = 18), and the phylogenetic analysis confirmed the placement of X. chiwensis within the tribe Salsoleae of the subfamily Salsoloideae, supporting its taxonomic distinctness. To support the conservation of this rare species, measures are proposed to expand the area of the Ustyurt Nature Reserve through the establishment of cluster sites. Full article

Sensitivity Analysis and Optimization of Urban Roundabout Road Design Parameters Based on CFD

With the rapid advancement of urbanization, urban transportation systems are facing increasingly severe congestion challenges, especially at traditional roundabouts. The rapid increase in vehicles has led to a sharp increase in pressure at roundabouts. In order to alleviate the traffic pressure in the roundabout, this paper changes the road design parameters of the roundabout, uses a CFD method combined with sensitivity analysis to study the influence of different inlet angles, lane numbers, and the outer radius on the pressure, and seeks the road design parameter scheme with the optimal mitigation effect. Firstly, the full factorial experimental design method is used to select the sample points in the design sample space, and the response values of each sample matrix are obtained by CFD. Secondly, the response surface model between the road design parameters of the roundabout and the pressure in the ring is constructed. The single-factor analysis method and the multi-factor analysis method are used to analyze the influence of the road parameters on the pressure of each feature point, and then the moment-independent sensitivity analysis method based on the response surface model is used to solve the sensitivity distribution characteristics of the road design parameters of the roundabout. Finally, the Kriging surrogate model is constructed, and the NSGA-II is used to solve the multi-objective optimization problem to obtain the optimal solution set of road parameters. The results show that there are significant differences in the mechanism of action of different road geometric parameters on the pressure of each feature point of the roundabout, and it shows obvious spatial heterogeneity of parameter sensitivity. The pressure changes in the two feature points at the entrance conflict area and the inner ring weaving area are significantly correlated with the lane number parameters. There is a strong coupling relationship between the pressure of the maximum pressure extreme point in the ring and the radius parameters of the outer ring. According to the optimal scheme of road parameters, that is, when the parameter set (inlet angle/°, number of lanes, outer radius/m) meets (35.4, 5, 65), the pressures of the feature points decrease by 34.1%, 38.3%, and 20.7%, respectively, which has a significant effect on alleviating the pressure in the intersection. This study optimizes the geometric parameters of roundabouts through multidisciplinary methods, provides a data-driven congestion reduction strategy for the urban sustainable development framework, and significantly improves road traffic efficiency, which is crucial for building an efficient traffic network and promoting urban sustainable development. To address the challenge of physically realizing fractional-order electrical networks, this study proposes an implementation method for a mechatronic inerter–spring–damper (ISD) suspension based on a fractional-order biquadratic transfer function. Building upon a previously established model of a mechatronic ISD suspension, the influence of parameter perturbations on the suspension’s dynamic performance characteristics was systematically investigated. Positive real synthesis was employed to determine the optimal five-element passive network structure for the fractional-order biquadratic electrical network. Subsequently, the Oustaloup filter approximation algorithm was utilized to realize the integer-order equivalents of the fractional-order electrical components, and the approximation effectiveness was analyzed through frequency-domain and time-domain simulations. Bench testing validated the effectiveness of the proposed method: under random road excitation at 20 m/s, the root mean square (RMS) values of the vehicle body acceleration, suspension working space, and dynamic tire load were reduced by 7.86%, 17.45%, and 2.26%, respectively, in comparison with those of the traditional passive suspension. This research provides both theoretical foundations and practical engineering solutions for implementing fractional-order transfer functions in vehicle suspensions, establishing a novel technical pathway for comprehensively enhancing suspension performance. The spatiotemporal evolution of coastal rural settlements varies significantly across different geomorphic environments, yet this variation is underexplored in current research. Guided by Coupled Human and Natural Systems, this study examines the adaptation mechanisms between coastal rural settlements and landforms using an integrated framework that combines various bay types, spatiotemporal characteristics, and dynamic drivers. Four representative bay types along Guangdong’s coast were analyzed: Hilly Ria Coast, Platform Ria Coast, Barrier-Lagoon Coast, and Estuarine Delta Coast. Using multi-source remote sensing data and optimized Geodetector modeling (1972 vs. 2022), we identified the patterns of spatiotemporal evolution and their driving forces. The results reveal distinct adaptation pathways: Hilly Ria Coast settlements expanded in a constrained manner, supported by tunnel–bridge infrastructure; Platform Ria Coasts developed multi-nucleated, port-oriented clusters through harbor-linked road networks; Barrier-Lagoon Coasts achieved balanced growth through integrated land–river–sea governance; and Estuarine Delta Coasts experienced urban–rural restructuring accompanied by water network degradation. This study proposes governance strategies tailored to specific landforms to support sustainable coastal planning. Full article

Congestion Forecasting Using Machine Learning Techniques: A Systematic Review

Traffic congestion constitutes a substantial global issue, adversely impacting economic productivity and quality of life, with associated costs estimated at approximately 2% of GDP in various nations. This systematic review investigates the application of machine learning (ML) in traffic congestion forecasting from 2010 to 2024, adhering to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive search of three major databases (IEEE Xplore, SpringerLink, and ScienceDirect) yielded 9695 initial records, with 115 studies meeting the inclusion criteria following rigorous screening. Data extraction encompassed methodological approaches, ML techniques, traffic characteristics, and forecasting periods, with quality assessment achieving near-perfect inter-rater reliability (Cohen’s κ = 0.89). Deep Neural Networks were the predominant technical approach (47%), with supervised learning being the most prevalent (57%). Classification tasks were the most common (42%), primarily addressing recurrent congestion scenarios (76%) and passenger vehicles (90%). The quality of publications was notably high, with 85% appearing in Q1-ranked journals, demonstrating exponential growth from minimal activity in 2010 to 18 studies in 2022. Significant research gaps persist: reinforcement learning is underutilized (8%), rural road networks are underrepresented (2%), and industry–academia collaboration is limited (3%). Future research should prioritize multimodal transportation systems, real-time adaptation mechanisms, and enhanced practical implementation to advance intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). This review was not registered because it focused on mapping the research landscape rather than intervention effects. Full article

Background: The integration of mining and urban spaces in coal-resource-based cities holds significant implications for urban transformation and sustainable development. However, existing research lacks an in-depth analysis of its characteristics and driving factors. Methods: This study takes the central urban area of Huaibei City as a case, utilizing historical documents, POI data, and spatial analysis methods to explore the evolution patterns and influencing factors of mining–urban spatial integration. Standard deviation ellipse analysis was employed to examine historical spatial changes, while a binary logistic regression model and principal component analysis were constructed based on 300 m × 300 m grid units to assess the roles of 11 factors, including location, transportation, commerce, and natural environment. Results: The results indicate that mining–urban spatial integration exhibits characteristics of lag, clustering, transportation dominance, and continuity. Commercial activity density, particularly leisure, dining, and shopping facilities, serves as a core driving factor. Road network density, along with the areas of educational and residential zones, positively promotes integration, whereas water surface areas (such as subsidence zones) significantly inhibit it. Among high-integration areas, Xiangshan District stands as the most economically prosperous city center; Lieshan–Yangzhuang mining area blends traditional and modern elements; and Zhuzhuang–Zhangzhuang mining area reflects the industrial landscape post-transformation. Conclusions: The study reveals diverse integration patterns under the synergistic effects of multiple factors, providing a scientific basis for optimizing spatial layouts and coordinating mining–urban development in coal-resource-based cities. Future research should continue to pay attention to the dynamic changes of spatial integration of mining cities, explore more effective integrated development models, and promote the rational and efficient use of urban space and the sustainable development of cities. Many research studies have designed intelligent traffic light scheduling algorithms. Some researchers rely on specialized sensors and hardware to gather real-time traffic data at signalized road intersections. Others benefit from artificial intelligence techniques and/or cloud computing technologies. The technology of vehicular networks has been widely used to gather the traffic characteristics of competing traffic flows at signalized road intersections. Intelligent traffic light controlling systems aim to fairly liberate competing traffic at signalized road intersections and eliminate traffic crises. These algorithms have been initially developed without focusing on the consequences of security threats or attacks. However, the accuracy of gathered traffic data at each road intersection affects its performance. Fake and corrupted packets highly affect the accuracy of the gathered traffic data. Thus, in this work, we aim to investigate the aspects of security and confidentiality of intelligent traffic light systems. The possible attacks on the confidentiality of intelligent traffic light systems are examined. Then, a confidential traffic light control system that protects the privacy of traveling vehicles and drivers is presented. The proposed algorithm mainly prevents unauthorized traceability and linkability attacks that threaten people’s lives and violate their privacy. Finally, the proposed algorithm is evaluated through extensive experiments to verify its correctness and benefits compared to traditional insecure intelligent traffic light systems. Full article

In recent decades, numerous studies have investigated the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and more precisely of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), in the prediction of complex technical parameters, particularly in the field of road infrastructure management. Among them, prediction of the widely used International Roughness Index (IRI) has attracted much attention due to its importance in pavement maintenance planning. This study focuses on predicting future IRI values using traditional regression models and neural networks, specifically Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, on two highway sections, each analyzed in two experimental setups. The models consider only traffic and structural road characteristics as variables. The results show that the LSTM method provides significantly lower prediction errors for both highway sections, indicating better performance in capturing roughness trends over time. These results confirm that ANNs are a useful tool for engineers by predicting future IRI values, as they help to extend pavement life and reduce overall maintenance costs. The integration of machine learning into pavement evaluation is a promising step forward in ongoing efforts to optimize pavement management. Full article

As urban traffic systems become increasingly complex, traditional traffic data collection methods based on fixed detectors face challenges such as poor data quality and acquisition difficulties. Traditional methods also lack the ability to capture complete vehicle path information essential for signal optimization. While vehicle trajectory data can provide rich spatiotemporal information, its sampling characteristics present new technical challenges for traffic parameter extraction. This study addresses the key issue of extracting traffic parameters suitable for signal timing optimization from sampled trajectory data by proposing a comprehensive method for traffic parameter extraction and analysis based on vehicle trajectory data. The method comprises five modules: data preprocessing, basic feature processing, exploratory data analysis, key feature extraction, and data visualization. An innovative algorithm is proposed to identify which intersections vehicles pass through, effectively solving the challenge of mapping GPS points to road network nodes. A dual calculation method based on instantaneous speed and time difference is adopted, improving parameter estimation accuracy through multi-source data fusion. A highly automated processing toolchain based on Python and MATLAB is developed. The method advances the state of the art through a novel polygon-based trajectory mapping algorithm and a systematic multi-source parameter extraction framework specifically designed for signal control optimization. Validation using actual trajectory data containing 2.48 million records successfully eliminated 30.80% redundant data and accurately identified complete paths for 7252 vehicles. The extracted multi-dimensional parameters, including link flow, average speed, travel time, and OD matrices, accurately reflect network operational status, identifying congestion hotspots, tidal traffic characteristics, and unstable road segments. The research outcomes provide a feasible technical solution for areas lacking traditional detection equipment. The extracted parameters can directly support signal optimization applications such as traffic signal coordination, timing optimization, and congestion management, providing crucial support for implementing data-driven intelligent traffic control. This research presents a theoretical framework validated with real-world data, providing a foundation for future implementation in operational signal control systems. Full article

Cold chain logistics is crucial in ensuring food quality and safety in modern supply chains. The required temperature control systems increase operational costs and environmental impacts compared to conventional logistics. To reduce these costs while maintaining service quality in real-world distribution scenarios, efficient route planning is essential, particularly when products with different temperature requirements need to be delivered together using multi-compartment refrigerated vehicles. This substantially increases the complexity of the routing process. We propose a novel deep reinforcement learning approach that incorporates a vehicle state encoder for capturing fleet characteristics and a dynamic vehicle state update mechanism for enabling real-time vehicle state updates during route planning. Extensive experiments on a real-world road network show that our proposed method significantly outperforms four representative methods. Compared to a recent ant colony optimization algorithm, it achieves up to a 6.32% reduction in costs while being up to 1637 times faster in computation. Full article

With the rapid progress of intelligent vehicle technology, the accurate recognition of road surface types and conditions has emerged as a crucial technology for improving the safety and comfort levels in autonomous driving. This paper puts forward a multi-feature fusion approach for road surface identification. Relying on a 24 GHz millimeter-wave radar, statistical features are combined with wavelet transform techniques. This combination enables the efficient classification of diverse road surface types and conditions. Firstly, the discriminability of radar echo signals corresponding to different road surface types is verified via statistical analysis. During this process, six-dimensional statistical features that display remarkable differences are extracted. Subsequently, a novel radar data reconstruction approach is presented. This method involves fitting discrete echo signals into coordinate curves. Then, discrete wavelet transform is utilized to extract both low-frequency and high-frequency features, thereby strengthening the spatio-temporal correlation of the signals. The low-frequency information serves to capture general characteristics, whereas the high-frequency information reflects detailed features. The statistical features and wavelet transform features are fused at the feature level, culminating in the formation of a 56-dimensional feature vector. Four machine learning models, namely the Wide Neural Network (WNN), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Kernel methods, are employed as classifiers for both training and testing purposes. Experiments were executed with 8865 samples obtained from a real-vehicle platform. These samples comprehensively represented 12 typical road surface types and conditions. The experimental outcomes clearly indicate that the proposed method is capable of attaining a road surface type identification accuracy as high as 94.2%. As a result, it furnishes an efficient and cost-efficient road perception solution for intelligent driving systems. This research validates the potential application of millimeter-wave radar in intricate road environments and offers both theoretical underpinning and practical support for the advancement of autonomous driving technology. Automatic Extraction of Road Interchange Networks from Crowdsourced Trajectory Data: A Forward and Reverse Tracking Approach

The generation of road interchange networks benefits various applications, such as vehicle navigation and intelligent transportation systems. Traditional methods often focus on common road structures but fail to fully utilize long-term trajectory continuity and flow information, leading to fragmented results and misidentification of overlapping roads as intersections. To address these limitations, we propose a forward and reverse tracking method for high-accuracy road interchange network generation. First, raw crowdsourced trajectory data is preprocessed by filtering out non-interchange trajectories and removing abnormal data based on both static and dynamic characteristics of the trajectories. Next, road subgraphs are extracted by identifying potential transition nodes, which are verified using directional and distribution information. Trajectory bifurcation is then performed at these nodes. Finally, a two-stage fusion process combines forward and reverse tracking results to produce a geometrically complete and topologically accurate road interchange network. Experiments using crowdsourced trajectory data from Shenzhen demonstrated highly accurate results, with 95.26% precision in geometric road network alignment and 90.06% accuracy in representing the connectivity of road interchange structures. Compared to existing methods, our approach enhanced accuracy in spatial alignment by 13.3% and improved the correctness of structural connections by 12.1%. The approach demonstrates strong performance across different types of interchanges, including cloverleaf, turbo, and trumpet interchanges. Full article
