Mining (1) operations in remote areas (2) face significant challenges related to energy supply, high fuel costs, and limited infrastructure. This study investigates the potential for achieving energy independence (3) and resilience (4) in such environments through the integration of renewable energy sources (5) and battery–electric mining equipment. Using the “Studena Vrila” underground bauxite mine as a case study, a comprehensive techno-economic and environmental analysis was conducted across three development models. These models explore incremental scenarios of solar and wind energy adoption combined with electrification of mobile machinery. The methodology includes calculating levelized cost of energy (LCOE), return on investment (ROI), and greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions under each scenario. Results demonstrate that a full transition to RES and electric machinery can reduce diesel consumption by 100%, achieve annual savings of EUR 149,814, and cut GHG emissions by over 1.7 million kg CO2-eq. While initial capital costs are high, all models yield a positive Net Present Value (NPV), confirming long-term economic viability. This research provides a replicable framework for decarbonizing mining operations in off-grid and infrastructure-limited regions. Full article

In modern agriculture, tractors play a crucial role in powering tools and implements. Proper operation of agricultural tractors in mechanized field operations can support sustainable agriculture and reduce emissions of pollutants such as carbon dioxide (CO2). This has been a recurring concern associated with agricultural intensification for food production. This study aimed to evaluate the optimization of tractor gears and engine speed during crop operations to minimize CO2 emissions and promote sustainability. The experiment was conducted using a strip plot design with subdivided sections and six replications, following a double factorial structure. The first factor evaluated was the type of agricultural implement (disc harrow, subsoiler, or sprayer), while the second factor was the engine speed setting (nominal or reduced). Operational and energy performance metrics were analyzed, including fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, travel speed, effective working time, wheel slippage, and working depth. Optimized gear selection and engine speeds resulted in a 20 to 40% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. However, other evaluated parameters remain unaffected by the reduced engine speed, regardless of the implement used, ensuring the operation’s quality. Thus, optimizing operator training or configuring machines allows for environmental impact reduction, making agricultural practices more sustainable. Full article

This study examines the progress, challenges, and successes in implementing Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG12), focusing on responsible consumption and production, using Qatar as a case study. The State has integrated Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) into national policies, established coordination mechanisms, and implemented action plans aligned with SDG12 targets. Achievements include renewable energy adoption, waste management reforms, and sustainable public procurement, though challenges persist in rationalizing fossil fuel subsidies, addressing data gaps, and enhancing corporate sustainability reporting. Efforts to reduce food loss and waste through redistribution programs highlight the country’s resilience, despite logistical obstacles. The nation has also advanced hazardous waste management, environmental awareness, and sustainable tourism policies, though gaps in data systems and policy coherence remain. Qatar’s approach provides a valuable local-to-global example of balancing resource-dependent economies with sustainability goals. Its strategies and lessons offer potential adaptability for other nations, especially those facing similar challenges in achieving SDG12. The accurate and precise measurement of lubricating oil consumption is critical for developing environmentally friendly internal combustion engines, particularly hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines. The deuterium tracer method is based on the addition of poly-deuterated base oil tracers to fully formulated oils for precise, accurate, and fast lubricating oil consumption measurements. Previously performed measurements have shown that the use of poly-deuterated poly-alpha olefins has minimal impact on lubricating oil properties, except for a slight drop in oil viscosity. To further reduce the impact on lubricating oil characteristics, a new base oil for the synthesis of a poly-deuterated tracer is introduced, and its influence on the lubricating oil’s chemical, tribological, and rheological properties is analyzed. Furthermore, the influence of the tracer addition on the preignition tendencies of the fully formulated oil is also examined. Based on the analyses, no relevant changes in the lubricating oil properties, such as viscosity, density, and thermal degradation behavior, can be observed. Additionally, the deuterium tracer does not negatively influence combustion anomalies, thus reducing preignition tendencies. These results establish the method’s compatibility with new-generation engines, especially hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines. Full article

Using waste biomass as a raw material for the combined production of electricity and heat offers corresponding energy, economic, environmental and resource efficiency benefits. The study examines both the performance of a system for combined energy production based on the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) utilizing wood biomass and the market interest in its deployment within Bulgaria. Its objective is to propose a technically and economically viable solution for the recovery of waste biomass through the combined production of electricity and heat while simultaneously assessing the readiness of industrial and municipal sectors to adopt such systems. The cogeneration plant incorporates an ORC module enhanced with three additional economizers that capture residual heat from flue gases. Operating on 2 t/h of biomass, the system delivers 1156 kW of electric power and 3660 kW of thermal energy, recovering an additional 2664 kW of heat. The overall energy efficiency reaches 85%, with projected annual revenues exceeding EUR 600,000 and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of over 5800 t/yr. These indicators can be achieved through optimal installation and operation. When operating at a reduced load, however, the specific fuel consumption increases and the overall efficiency of the installation decreases. The marketing survey results indicate that 75% of respondents express interest in adopting such technologies, contingent upon the availability of financial incentives. The strongest demand is observed for systems with capacities up to 1000 kW. However, significant barriers remain, including high initial investment costs and uneven access to raw materials. The findings confirm that the developed system offers a technologically robust, environmentally efficient and market-relevant solution, aligned with the goals of energy independence, sustainability and the transition to a low-carbon economy. The study presents a comprehensive assessment of the combustion efficiency of low-grade coal from the Karazhyra deposit in small- and medium-capacity boiler units of the energy workshops operated by Vostokenergo LLP (East Kazakhstan Region, Kazakhstan). It was found that the average annual thermal energy output amounts to 2,387,348.85 GJ with a coal consumption of 164,328.5 tons. Based on operational data from 2016 to 2017, the average thermal efficiency (boiler efficiency) was 66.03%, with a maximum value of 75% recorded at the Zhezkent energy workshop. The average lower heating value (LHV) of the coal was 19.41 MJ/kg, which is below the design value of 20.52 MJ/kg, indicating the use of coal with reduced energy characteristics and elevated ash content (21.4%). The unburned carbon content in the ash and slag waste (ASW) was determined to be between 14 and 35%, indicating incomplete combustion. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses revealed the presence of microspheres, porous granules, and coal residues, with silicon and aluminum oxides dominating the composition (up to 70.49%). Differences in the pollutant potential of ash from different boiler units were identified. Recommendations were substantiated regarding the adjustment of the air–fuel regime, modernization of combustion control systems, and utilization of ASW. The results may be used to develop measures aimed at improving the energy efficiency and environmental safety of coal-fired boiler plants. Full article

Traditional Pavement Condition Index (PCI) assessments are highly resource-intensive, demanding substantial time and labor while generating significant carbon emissions through extensive field operations. To address these sustainability challenges, this research presents an innovative methodology utilizing Gene Expression Programming (GEP) to determine PCI values based on International Roughness Index (IRI) measurements from Iraqi road networks, offering an environmentally conscious and resource-efficient approach to pavement management. The study incorporated 401 samples of IRI and PCI data through comprehensive visual inspection procedures. The developed GEP model exhibited exceptional predictive performance, with coefficient of determination (R2) values achieving 0.821 for training, 0.858 for validation, and 0.8233 overall, successfully accounting for approximately 82–85% of PCI variance. Prediction accuracy remained robust with Mean Absolute Error (MAE) values of 12–13 units and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values of 11.209 and 11.00 for training and validation sets, respectively. The lower validation RMSE suggests effective generalization without overfitting. Strong correlations between predicted and measured values exceeded 0.90, with acceptable relative absolute error values ranging from 0.403 to 0.387, confirming model effectiveness. Comparative analysis reveals GEP outperforms alternative regression methods in generalization capacity, particularly in real-world applications. This sustainable methodology represents a cost-effective alternative to conventional PCI evaluation, significantly reducing environmental impact through decreased field operations, lower fuel consumption, and minimized traffic disruption. By streamlining pavement management while maintaining assessment reliability and accuracy, this approach supports environmentally responsible transportation systems and aligns contemporary sustainability goals in infrastructure management. To further enhance the economic performance of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), this study develops a model-adaptive model predictive control (MPC) strategy. This strategy leverages the dynamic relationship between proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) output characteristics and temperature to track its optimal operating temperature (OOT), addressing challenges of temperature control accuracy and high energy consumption in the PEMFC thermal management system (TMS). First, PEMFC and TMS models were developed and experimentally validated. Subsequently, the PEMFC power–temperature coupling curve was experimentally determined under multiple operating conditions to serve as the reference trajectory for TMS multi-objective optimization. For MPC controller design, the TMS model was linearized and discretized, yielding a predictive model adaptable to different load demands for stack temperature across the full operating range. A multi-constrained quadratic cost function was formulated, aiming to minimize the deviation of the PEMFC operating temperature from the OOT while accounting for TMS parasitic power consumption. Finally, simulations under Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle (WLTC) conditions evaluated the OOT tracking performance of both PID and MPC control strategies, as well as their impact on stack efficiency and TMS energy consumption at different ambient temperatures. The results indicate that, compared to PID control, MPC reduces temperature tracking error by 33%, decreases fan and pump speed fluctuations by over 24%, and lowers TMS energy consumption by 10%. These improvements enhance PEMFC operational stability and improve FCV energy efficiency. Full article

This work proposes a new method to refill fuel cell electric vehicle hydrogen tanks from a storage system in hydrogen refueling stations. The new method uses the storage tanks in cascade to supply hydrogen to the refueling station dispensers. This method reduces the hydrogen compressor power requirement and the energy consumption for refilling the vehicle tank; therefore, the proposed alternative design for hydrogen refueling stations is feasible and compatible with low-intensity renewable energy sources like solar photovoltaic, wind farms, or micro-hydro plants. Additionally, the cascade method supplies higher pressure to the dispenser throughout the day, thus reducing the refueling time for specific vehicle driving ranges. The simulation shows that the energy saving using the cascade method achieves 9% to 45%, depending on the vehicle attendance. The hydrogen refueling station design supports a daily vehicle attendance of 9 to 36 with a complete refueling process coverage. The carried-out simulation proves that the vehicle tank achieves the maximum attainable pressure of 700 bars with a storage system of six tanks. The data analysis shows that the daily hourly hydrogen demand follows a sinusoidal function, providing a practical tool to predict the hydrogen demand for any vehicle attendance, allowing the planners and station designers to resize the elements to fulfill the new requirements. The proposed system is also applicable to hydrogen ICE vehicles. Full article

Urban areas are facing increasing traffic congestion, pollution, and infrastructure strain. Traditional urban transportation systems are often fragmented. They require users to plan, pay, and travel across multiple disconnected services. Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) integrates these services into a single digital platform, simplifying access and improving the user experience. This review critically examines the role of MaaS in fostering sustainable mobility ecosystems. MaaS aims to enhance user-friendliness, service variety, and sustainability by adopting a customer-centric approach to transportation. The findings reveal that successful MaaS systems consistently align with multimodal transport infrastructure, equitable access policies, and strong public-private partnerships. MaaS enhances the management of routes and traffic, effectively mitigating delays and congestion while concurrently reducing energy consumption and fuel usage. In this study, the authors examine MaaS as a new mobility paradigm for a sustainable transportation system in smart cities, observing the challenges and opportunities associated with its implementation. To assess the environmental impact, a sustainability index is calculated based on the use of different modes of transportation. Significant findings indicate that MaaS systems are proliferating in both quantity and complexity, increasingly integrating capabilities such as real-time multimodal planning, dynamic pricing, and personalized user profiles. This paper presents a data-driven energy management scheme for fuel cell and battery electric vehicles, formulated as a constrained optimal control problem. The proposed method employs a co-state network trained using real-time measurements to estimate the control law without requiring prior knowledge of the system model or a complete dataset across the full operating domain. In contrast to conventional reinforcement learning approaches, this method avoids the issue of high dimensionality and does not depend on extensive offline training. Robustness is demonstrated by treating uncertain and time-varying elements, including power consumption from air conditioning systems, variations in road slope, and passenger-related demands, as unknown disturbances. The desired state of charge is defined as a reference trajectory, and the control input is computed while ensuring compliance with all operational constraints. Validation results based on a combined driving profile confirm the effectiveness of the proposed controller in maintaining the battery charge, reducing fluctuations in fuel cell power output, and ensuring reliable performance under practical conditions. Comparative evaluations are conducted against two benchmark controllers: one designed to maintain a constant state of charge and another based on a soft actor–critic learning algorithm. Full article

The maritime sector is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by increasingly stringent international regulations targeting air pollution. While newly built vessels integrate advanced technologies for compliance, the global fleet averages 21.8 years of age and must meet emission requirements through retrofitting or operational changes. This study evaluates, at environmental and economic levels, two key sulphur abatement strategies for a 1998-built cruise vessel nearing the end of its service life: (i) the installation of open-loop scrubbers with fuel enhancement devices, and (ii) a switch to marine diesel oil as main fuel. The analysis was based on real operational data from a cruise vessel. For the environmental assessment, a Tier III hybrid emissions model was used. The results show that scrubbers reduce SOx emissions by approximately 97% but increase fuel consumption by 3.6%, raising both CO2 and NOx emissions, while particulate matter decreases by only 6.7%. In contrast, switching to MDO achieves over 99% SOx reduction, an 89% drop in particulate matter, and a nearly 5% reduction in CO2 emissions. At an economic level, it was found that, despite a CAPEX of nearly USD 1.9 million, scrubber installation provides an average annual net saving exceeding USD 8.2 million. From the deterministic and probabilistic analyses performed, including Monte Carlo simulations under various fuel price correlation scenarios, scrubber installation consistently shows high profitability, with NPVs surpassing USD 70 million and payback periods under four months. Considering the importance of the automotive industry, reducing the environmental impact of automotive component manufacturing is crucial. Additionally, lightening of the latter promotes a reduction in fuel consumption throughout the vehicle’s life cycle, limiting emissions. This study presents a comprehensive approach to optimizing and manufacturing a MacPherson steering knuckle using topology optimization (TO), additive manufacturing, and rapid investment casting (RIC). Static structural simulations confirmed the mechanical integrity of the optimized design, with stress and strain values remaining within the elastic limits of the SG A536 iron alloy. The TO process achieved a 30% reduction in mass, resulting in lower material use and production costs. Additive manufacturing of optimized geometry reduced resin consumption by 27% and printing time by 9%. RIC simulations validated efficient mold filling and solidification, with porosity confined to removable riser regions. Life cycle assessment (LCA) demonstrated a 27% reduction in manufacturing environmental impact and a 31% decrease throughout the component life cycle, largely due to vehicle lightweighting. The findings highlight the potential of integrated TO and advanced manufacturing techniques to produce structurally efficient and environmentally sustainable automotive components. This workflow offers promising implications for broader industrial applications that aim to balance mechanical performance with ecological responsibility. Full article

Rail transit as a high-energy consumption field urgently requires the adoption of clean energy innovations to reduce energy consumption and accelerate the transition to new energy applications. As an energy-saving fluid machinery, the ejector exhibits significant application potential and academic value within this field. This paper reviewed the recent advances, technical challenges, research hotspots, and future development directions of ejector applications in rail transit, aiming to address gaps in existing reviews. (1) In waste heat recovery, exhaust heat is utilized for propulsion in vehicle ejector refrigeration air conditioning systems, resulting in energy consumption being reduced by 12~17%. (2) In vehicle pneumatic pressure reduction systems, the throttle valve is replaced with an ejector, leading to an output power increase of more than 13% and providing support for zero-emission new energy vehicle applications. (3) In hydrogen supply systems, hydrogen recirculation efficiency exceeding 68.5% is achieved in fuel cells using multi-nozzle ejector technology. (4) Ejector-based active flow control enables precise ± 20 N dynamic pantograph lift adjustment at 300 km/h. However, current research still faces challenges including the tendency toward subcritical mode in fixed geometry ejectors under variable operating conditions, scarcity of application data for global warming potential refrigerants, insufficient stability of hydrogen recycling under wide power output ranges, and thermodynamic irreversibility causing turbulence loss. To address these issues, future efforts should focus on developing dynamic intelligent control technology based on machine learning, designing adjustable nozzles and other structural innovations, optimizing multi-system efficiency through hybrid architectures, and investigating global warming potential refrigerants. These strategies will facilitate the evolution of ejector technology toward greater intelligence and efficiency, thereby supporting the green transformation and energy conservation objectives of rail transit. A novel approach to managing domestic heating systems through IoT technologies is introduced in this paper. The system optimizes energy consumption by dynamically adapting to electricity and fuel price fluctuations while maintaining user comfort. Integrating smart devices significantly reduce energy costs and offer a favorable payback period, positioning the solution as both sustainable and economically viable. Efficient heating management is increasingly critical amid growing energy and environmental concerns. This strategy uses IoT devices to collect real-time data on prices, consumption, and user preferences. Based on this data, the system adjusts heating settings intelligently to balance comfort and cost savings. IoT connectivity manages continuous monitoring and dynamic optimization in response to changing conditions. This study includes a real-case comparison between a conventional central heating system and an IoT-managed electric radiator setup. By applying automation rules linked to energy pricing and user habits, the system enhances energy efficiency, especially in cold climates. The economic evaluation shows that using low-cost IoT devices yields meaningful savings and achieves equipment payback within approximately three years. The results demonstrate the system’s effectiveness, demonstrating that smart, adaptive heating solutions can cut energy expenses without sacrificing comfort, while offering environmental and financial benefits.
